Chapter 6: The Family That Almost Was

The phone kept ringing.

Nobody moved.

The name on Victor’s screen felt heavier than any confession.

*Daniel Walker.*

Maya stared.

“Walker?””

Her eyes slowly moved toward me.

Then toward Victor.

“Who is Daniel Walker?””

I felt my chest tighten.

Because I knew that name.

But I never expected to hear it again.

Victor ended the call.

Too late.

The damage was already done.

“Maya,” he said.

“No.””

She stepped back.

“Don’t explain yet.””

Her voice trembled.

“Just answer one question.””

Victor waited.

“Who is Daniel Walker?””

I looked at the ground.

Because the answer belonged to me.

“Renee?””

Maya looked at me.

I swallowed.

“Daniel was my brother.””

The silence was immediate.

Maya blinked.

“Your brother?””

I nodded.

“He died before I met you.””

Victor looked at me.

His expression carried regret.

Because he knew what I was about to say.

Maya noticed.

“Why would your dead brother be calling him?””

Nobody answered.

Then Victor said:

“Because Daniel was supposed to adopt you.””

Maya froze.

The words didn’t make sense.

They couldn’t.

“Your brother?””

I nodded.

“Daniel and his wife had been trying to adopt for years.””

Maya stared at me.

“And then?””

I took a breath.

“And then your case came up.””

She looked confused.

“My case?””

“Yes.””

Victor continued.

“Your mother’s lawyer contacted several families after the custody situation began.””

Maya looked between us.

“And Daniel was one of them.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he adopt me?””

My throat tightened.

“Because he died.””

Maya looked down.

The anger disappeared for a moment.

“Before?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

I looked at her.

“Three days before the final hearing.””

Her face changed.

Three days.

A lifetime changing because of three days.

“So what happened?””

Victor answered.

“After Daniel died, I stepped in.””

Maya looked at him.

“Why?””

His eyes filled.

“Because Daniel asked me to.””

I felt tears forming.

Because I remembered that conversation.

The hospital room.

The machines.

Daniel barely able to speak.

“Promise me,” he had whispered to Victor.

“What?””

“If I don’t make it… don’t let that little girl go through another loss.””

Victor had promised.

And he kept it.

But we never told Maya.

Maya sat down.

“I don’t understand.””

I walked closer.

“Daniel wasn’t your father.””

“I know.””

“But he wanted to be someone who protected you.””

She looked at me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Because there was no good answer.

Only a painful one.

“Because after Daniel died, I couldn’t talk about him without feeling like I was losing him again.””

Maya looked away.

“And then I became part of your family.””

“Yes.””

“Did you ever see me as Daniel’s replacement?””

The question broke me.

“No.””

I answered immediately.

“Never.””

She looked at me.

“You’re sure?””

“I didn’t love you because of Daniel.””

I touched my chest.

“I loved you because you were Maya.””

For the first time that day, she didn’t look at me like an enemy.

She looked tired.

A child who had spent hours discovering that the foundation of her life had cracks everywhere.

Victor sat beside her.

“Maya, there’s one more thing.””

She laughed weakly.

“Of course there is.””

He looked ashamed.

“The adoption paperwork was complicated.””

“How complicated?””

“Your biological parents agreed to the adoption under specific conditions.””

“What conditions?””

Victor hesitated.

Then Ethan spoke.

“They wanted to make sure you would never lose everyone again.””

Maya looked at him.

“What does that mean?””

Claire answered quietly.

“It means we chose a family.””

Maya frowned.

“A family?””

I felt something shift.

Because I knew where this was going.

Claire looked at me.

Then at Victor.

“The agreement was that you would be raised by people connected to us.””

Maya stared.

“Connected how?””

Victor looked at me.

I whispered:

“Daniel was Ethan’s cousin.””

Maya stopped breathing.

“What?””

The entire story rearranged itself in her mind.

The people she thought were strangers.

The people she thought had abandoned her.

The people she thought had lied to her.

They were all connected.

Her biological parents.

Victor.

Me.

Daniel.

Everyone.

A family she never knew existed.

Maya stood.

“So my whole life…”

She looked around.

“All of you knew each other?””

“Not all of it,” Victor said.

“But enough.””

Nobody argued.

Because again, she was right.

She looked at me.

“Did you know Ethan?””

“No.””

“Did you know Claire?””

“No.””

“Then why did everyone keep secrets?””

No one answered.

Because there was no answer that sounded acceptable.

Then Ethan’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

A pause.

Then his expression turned serious.

“What do you mean she’s gone?””

Everyone froze.

Maya looked at him.

“Who?””

Ethan slowly lowered the phone.

“Claire.””

Maya turned.

Her mother was gone.

The courtyard entrance where she had been standing was empty.

A cold feeling moved through me.

Because people didn’t disappear twice without a reason.

Victor looked at Ethan.

“What did the person say?””

Ethan stared at the phone.

Then whispered:

“They found something.””

Maya stepped closer.

“Found what?””

Ethan looked at her.

And the fear in his eyes made my blood run cold.

“Your mother found the person who has been hiding the final piece of your adoption story.””

May you like

He looked toward the parking lot.

“And now she’s afraid they found her first.””
