Chapter 9: The Night Everything Changed

Maya didn’t tell Victor about the message.

That scared me more than the message itself.

Because the Maya I knew always searched for approval.

Always looked for permission.

The Maya standing beside me now was different.

She had learned something important.

Adults could love you and still lie to you.

She deleted the message.

Then opened her car door.

“Where are you going?””

I asked.

She looked at me.

“To get answers.””

“Alone?””

“Yes.””

“No.””

She frowned.

“Renee.””

“I spent eleven years standing beside you.””

Her expression softened.

“I’m not letting you walk into something dangerous by yourself.””

She looked away.

For a second, I saw the little girl again.

The one who needed someone.

Then she nodded.

“Okay.””

We followed the location from the message.

A small abandoned office building near the edge of town.

The kind of place people passed without noticing.

Maya walked inside.

I followed.

The hallway smelled like dust and old paper.

A single light flickered above us.

Then a voice came from the dark.

“You came.””

Maya stopped.

An older woman stepped forward.

Elegant clothes.

Gray hair.

A familiar coldness in her eyes.

Victor’s mother.

Evelyn Walker.

Maya stared.

“You’re alive.””

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“Yes.””

The smile made my skin crawl.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was controlled.

Like she had rehearsed every expression.

“You wanted answers.””

Maya stepped forward.

“You sent the message?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Because you deserve the truth.””

Maya laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that right before they tell me another secret.””

Evelyn accepted the criticism.

Fairly.

“I understand why you hate me.””

“I don’t hate you.””

Maya’s voice was quiet.

“I don’t know you.””

That was worse.

Evelyn nodded.

“Fair.””

I watched her carefully.

People like Evelyn were dangerous because they rarely needed to raise their voice.

They controlled rooms by making everyone else feel unstable.

“You want to know what happened the night you were adopted?””

Maya nodded.

“Yes.””

Evelyn sat down.

“Your mother and father were fighting for custody.””

Maya listened.

“Your father wanted to keep you.””

Ethan had said that.

But Victor said there were reports.

Evelyn continued.

“Your mother wanted you safe.””

Maya looked confused.

“Then why did she leave?””

Evelyn smiled sadly.

“Because she knew she couldn’t win.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone convinced her she had no choice.””

The room went silent.

Maya looked at me.

Then at Evelyn.

“Who?””

Evelyn looked directly at her.

“Victor.””

My heart stopped.

“No.””

Maya froze.

“What?””

Evelyn continued.

“Victor didn’t adopt you because he was asked.””

She leaned forward.

“He adopted you because he made a promise.””

Maya’s voice became small.

“To who?””

Evelyn looked at me.

Then answered:

“To Daniel.””

I breathed again.

Because that part was true.

But Evelyn wasn’t finished.

“But there’s something nobody told you.””

Maya waited.

“Daniel didn’t just ask Victor to protect you.””

She reached into her purse.

Pulled out a document.

And placed it on the table.

Maya picked it up.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

“What is this?””

Evelyn said nothing.

Maya looked up.

“What is this?””

Evelyn whispered:

“Your original adoption agreement.””

I stepped closer.

“Victor said there were conditions.””

“There were.””

Maya looked at the document again.

Then her face changed.

Because one sentence was circled.

One sentence that none of us had ever seen.

*The adoptive parents must inform Maya of her complete family history before her eighteenth birthday.*

Maya looked up.

Her voice barely worked.

“You knew?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Victor knew.””

The air disappeared.

“Renee knew?””

My heart broke.

“No.””

But Maya wasn’t looking at me.

She was looking at Victor’s mother.

Evelyn continued:

“They all broke the agreement.””

Maya stared.

“Why?””

Evelyn’s answer was quiet.

“Because if you knew the truth, you would have control over your own life.””

Maya’s face hardened.

“And you wanted control.””

Evelyn didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

She continued:

“Your trust was protected until eighteen. After that, you could make your own decisions.””

Maya looked at the document.

“So everyone hid the truth because of money.””

“No.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“Everyone hid the truth because they were afraid of losing you.””

A pause.

Then:

“But I was the only one honest enough to admit I wanted something.””

Maya stared.

The worst part was…

Evelyn believed she was being honest.

Then Maya’s phone buzzed.

She looked down.

Her face drained.

A new message.

This time from Claire.

*Maya, don’t trust Evelyn. She’s the reason your adoption papers were changed.*

Maya slowly lifted her eyes.

Evelyn saw her expression.

“What did she say?””

Maya locked the phone.

May you like

And for the first time…

nobody knew whose side she was on.
