Chapter 4: The Girl Who Was Never Supposed to Exist

“DADDY!””

Daniel heard Lily's voice again.

This time, it came from somewhere beyond the storage facility.

He spun toward the sound.

“Lily!””

Rain hammered the pavement. The parking lot was nearly empty, illuminated by two flickering security lamps. His car sat beneath one of them, its rear door wide open.

Lily's stuffed rabbit lay in a puddle.

Daniel dropped to his knees and picked it up.

“Lily! Baby, where are you?””

No answer.

Vanessa appeared behind him.

“Daniel, don't move.””

He turned sharply.

“Don't tell me what to do! My daughter is missing!””

“I know.””

“You know?””

Vanessa reached into her jacket and pulled out her phone.

“Look.””

A video was playing.

Lily was sitting in the back seat of a black SUV. Her cheeks were wet, and she was holding her hands together in her lap.

A man sat beside her.

He wore a dark baseball cap, his face hidden by the shadows.

Lily looked directly into the camera.

“Daddy, I'm okay.””

Daniel's knees nearly gave way.

Then the man spoke.

“Mr. Carter, you have something that belongs to us.””

The video ended.

Daniel grabbed Vanessa's phone.

“Call the police.””

“They won't help.””

“Then tell me who will!””

Vanessa looked toward the road.

“There's someone who can.””

“Who?””

“Evelyn.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You said you knew where she was.””

“I do.””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I needed to know whether you had the key.””

Daniel held up the small brass key marked 001.

“Is this what they want?””

Vanessa nodded.

“It's the master key to the original Carter vault.””

“And Lily?””

“They want leverage.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“If anything happens to my daughter, I swear—”

“I know,” Vanessa interrupted.

“And that's why we need to move before they realize I have it.””

He studied her face.

There was something different about Vanessa now.

The polished, confident woman who had stood beside him at the funeral was gone. Her hands were shaking. Her eyes kept moving toward the road.

“Why are you helping me?”” he asked.

Vanessa looked down.

“Because I made a promise to Evelyn.””

“What promise?””

“To bring Lily home.””

Daniel didn't trust her.

But he didn't have time to decide whether he could.

“Get in the car.””

They drove away from the storage facility.

For the first twenty minutes, neither spoke.

Daniel kept checking his phone, hoping another message would arrive.

Nothing.

Then Vanessa broke the silence.

“You need to understand something about Lily.””

Daniel stared through the windshield.

“I've heard enough about what I supposedly don't know about my own daughter.””

“Your father was involved in an adoption program.””

Daniel turned.

“What adoption program?””

“Not the kind you're thinking of. Twenty-six years ago, several wealthy families were recruited into a private medical research network. Children were transferred between families using falsified birth records.””

Daniel gripped the steering wheel.

“That's insane.””

“Your father discovered it. He tried to expose the people involved.””

“And they killed him?””

“They made the world believe they had.””

Daniel thought about the photograph of Thomas in the wheelchair.

“Why?””

“Because Thomas had something they couldn't find.””

“The ledger.””

Vanessa nodded.

“And something else.””

“What?””

“The original birth records.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What does that have to do with Lily?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Your father found out that Evelyn had been investigating the same program when she became pregnant.””

Daniel's stomach tightened.

“She never told me any of this.””

“She was trying to keep you out of it.””

“Then explain the photograph.””

Vanessa looked toward the window.

“Lily was born at St. Mary's Hospital. Evelyn was told there had been complications. She was separated from the baby for several hours.””

Daniel remembered that night.

He remembered pacing outside the delivery room, holding a paper cup of terrible coffee.

He remembered Evelyn crying when the nurse finally brought their daughter into the room.

He remembered how tightly she had held Lily.

“What happened?”” he whispered.

“Someone switched the medical records.””

Daniel slammed his foot against the brake.

The car stopped beside an empty road.

“Are you telling me my daughter was switched at birth?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I'm telling you that the people who created the program falsified several birth certificates. They wanted to hide the identities of children connected to powerful families.””

“Lily is my daughter.””

“I didn't say she wasn't.””

“Then stop speaking in riddles!””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Her biological mother was Evelyn's younger sister.””

Daniel stared.

“Evelyn never had a sister.””

“She did. Her name was Rachel.””

The name meant nothing to him.

But Vanessa's next words made his chest tighten.

“Rachel died shortly after giving birth. Evelyn adopted the baby privately. Your father arranged the paperwork because Rachel had been trying to escape the same people who controlled Northbridge.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. Evelyn told me Lily was ours.””

“She was yours in every way that mattered. You raised her. You loved her. You were there for every first step.””

Vanessa paused.

“But the people behind Northbridge discovered the original records. They want Lily because she is connected to the Carter family in a way they never expected.””

Daniel looked down at the key.

“Why would they take a seven-year-old child over a birth certificate?””

Vanessa's face became pale.

“Because Rachel left something behind.””

“What?””

“A recorded statement. She named the people who arranged the transfers.””

“And Lily has it?””

“Not exactly.””

Vanessa reached into the glove compartment and removed a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a woman holding a newborn baby.

The woman had Evelyn's eyes.

But she was younger, with shorter hair and a small scar near her chin.

On the back, Evelyn had written:

Rachel and her daughter. The truth belongs to the child.

Daniel stared at the photograph.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Where is Evelyn?””

“An old property outside Savannah.””

“Take me there.””

“Not yet.””

He turned toward her.

“What do you mean, not yet?””

“First, we need to retrieve the ledger.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“My daughter has been kidnapped, and you want me to go looking for paperwork?””

“It's not paperwork. It's the only thing they fear.””

“Then they can fear it while I find my child.””

Vanessa didn't argue.

Instead, she opened her phone and showed him another message.

It was from an unknown number.

*BRING THE MASTER KEY TO THE BANK AT 2:00 A.M. NO POLICE. NO EXCEPTIONS.*

Daniel checked the clock.

1:17 a.m.

He looked at the message again.

“Who sent this?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't know.””

A second message arrived.

This one included a photograph of Lily sitting beside a window.

There was a small clock on the wall behind her.

The hands showed 1:16.

Daniel's blood ran cold.

The photograph had been taken less than a minute earlier.

He started the car.

“Tell me where the bank is.””

Vanessa gave him the address.

The old Carter family bank stood in the historic district, a stone building with boarded windows and a faded brass sign.

Daniel had passed it hundreds of times as a child.

His grandfather had opened it in 1958.

His father had closed it after a series of mysterious financial losses.

Daniel parked across the street.

The master key felt unusually heavy in his pocket.

Vanessa pointed toward a narrow side entrance.

“The vault is beneath the building.””

“How do you know?””

“I went there with Evelyn.””

Daniel looked at her.

“When?””

“Before the accident.””

He wanted to ask a hundred questions.

But the clock was moving.

They entered through the side door.

The smell of dust and damp wood filled the building.

A staircase led down to the basement.

At the bottom stood a steel door with an old brass lock.

Daniel inserted the key.

It turned.

The door opened.

Inside was a room filled with metal filing cabinets.

And at the far end stood a large safe.

A white envelope had been placed on top.

Daniel picked it up.

His name was written across the front.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed Evelyn standing beside Lily.

Both were smiling.

But the date printed on the back was tomorrow.

Daniel stared at it.

Then he heard a familiar voice behind him.

“Daniel.””

He turned.

A woman stood in the doorway.

Her hair was wet from the rain.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Evelyn?””

She took one trembling step forward.

“I'm sorry.””

Daniel dropped the photograph.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then he crossed the room and pulled his wife into his arms.

She clung to him, crying into his shoulder.

He closed his eyes.

He had imagined this moment a thousand times.

But he hadn't imagined the anger that came with the relief.

He pulled away.

“Where is Lily?””

Evelyn's face crumpled.

“Daniel, there's something I need to tell you.””

“Where is our daughter?””

She looked at Vanessa.

Then back at him.

May you like

And whispered:

“Lily was never the person they were supposed to take.””
