Chapter 6: The Father Who Never Died

“Dad?””

Daniel's voice barely emerged.

On the tablet, Thomas Carter looked older than the man Daniel remembered.

His hair had turned completely white. His face was thinner, and a deep scar ran from his temple toward his jaw.

But his eyes were unmistakable.

The same eyes that had watched Daniel ride his first bicycle.

The same eyes that had looked at him across the kitchen table when he announced he was getting married.

The same eyes Daniel had cried over twenty-six years earlier.

Thomas looked directly into the camera.

“Daniel, if you're watching this, I'm sorry.””

Daniel stepped closer to the tablet.

“Where is Lily?””

Thomas glanced toward the child beside him.

“She is safe for now.””

“For now?””

“Listen to me. You have less than an hour.””

Daniel clenched his fists.

“Tell me where you are.””

Thomas shook his head.

“I can't.””

“You've been dead for twenty-six years! You let me believe you were dead!””

“I know.””

“You let me grow up without you!””

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“I know, son.””

Daniel struck the metal table with his palm.

“Then explain yourself!””

The tablet image shook slightly.

Thomas looked toward someone standing outside the camera's view.

Then he spoke again.

“I discovered the network after your grandfather died. I found accounts in children's names. I found false birth certificates. I found money moving through families that didn't exist.””

Daniel looked at the ledger.

“You could have gone to the police.””

“I did.””

“And?””

“The investigator I trusted was working for Northbridge.””

Daniel remembered Evelyn saying the authorities were compromised.

Thomas continued.

“They threatened your mother. They threatened you. When I realized they were watching our house, I arranged my disappearance.””

“You faked your death?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because you were nineteen. You were young, and you had your entire life ahead of you.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You made that decision for me?””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“And now?””

“Now I know I made a terrible mistake.””

Behind Daniel, Evelyn was kneeling beside Vanessa.

Blood had soaked through Vanessa's sleeve.

Evelyn pressed a folded cloth against the wound.

“Vanessa, stay with me.””

Vanessa grimaced.

“I'm fine.””

“You're bleeding.””

“I've had worse.””

Daniel barely heard them.

His attention was fixed on his father.

“Why did you take Lily?””

Thomas looked toward the child.

“I didn't take her.””

“Then who did?””

Thomas's expression changed.

“Someone who believes the original birth records will expose a secret that has been hidden for decades.””

Daniel looked at the black ledger.

“What secret?””

Thomas leaned closer to the camera.

“The identity of the first child transferred through the program.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“What does that have to do with Lily?””

Thomas glanced toward someone beside him.

Then he said something Daniel wasn't prepared to hear.

“Lily is the only person alive who can legally claim the original Carter inheritance.””

Daniel stared.

“What inheritance?””

“Your grandfather left a trust. It was designed to protect the descendants of the original Carter family. Northbridge discovered it years ago. They tried to gain control by falsifying the family records.””

Daniel looked at the birth certificate.

His own name.

Rachel's name.

And a series of dates that didn't make sense.

“Why would they need Lily?””

“Because the trust was created in the name of a child born outside the marriage. Your grandfather wanted that child protected.””

Evelyn slowly stood.

“Thomas, tell him the rest.””

Thomas looked toward her.

Then back at Daniel.

“Your grandfather had another son.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“His name was Michael.””

Daniel searched his memory.

There had been an old photograph in his grandmother's house.

A young man standing beside his grandfather.

He had always assumed it was a cousin.

“Michael was your grandfather's firstborn,” Thomas explained.

“But he was never included in the official family records.””

“Why?””

“Because he was born to a woman your grandfather loved before he married your grandmother.””

Daniel stared.

“And Lily is connected to him?””

Thomas nodded.

“Michael was Rachel's father.””

Daniel slowly turned toward Evelyn.

“Then Rachel was my cousin?””

“Yes,” Evelyn whispered.

“And Lily?””

“She is your cousin's daughter.””

Daniel rubbed his face.

Everything seemed to be connected.

His father.

His grandfather.

Evelyn's sister.

The false identities.

The hidden money.

But there was still one question.

“Why did Evelyn disappear?””

Thomas looked toward her.

“Because she found out who was running Northbridge.””

Daniel turned.

“Who?””

Evelyn's lips trembled.

She looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa nodded slowly.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“Your grandmother.””

Daniel felt the room shift.

“My grandmother died fifteen years ago.””

“Her death was also falsified,” Evelyn said.

Thomas lowered his head.

“She has been using the name Margaret Hayes.””

Daniel remembered the third passport.

Margaret Hayes.

The photograph of Evelyn.

The woman standing outside the brick building.

And the old man in the wheelchair.

“Where is she?””

Thomas looked directly at him.

“She's the person who ordered Rachel's death.””

Daniel's hands began to shake.

He thought about the family dinners.

The Christmas presents.

The woman who had taught him how to tie his shoes.

The grandmother who had kissed his forehead before bed.

He remembered her voice.

Family protects family, Daniel.

He had believed her.

The basement door suddenly slammed.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood at the top of the staircase.

She wore a cream-colored coat and carried a black umbrella.

Her silver hair was neatly arranged.

Her face was calm.

Daniel recognized her immediately.

“Grandma?””

The woman smiled.

“Hello, Daniel.””

Evelyn moved in front of him.

“Margaret, don't come any closer.””

The older woman laughed softly.

“Still dramatic, Evelyn.””

Daniel stared.

“You're supposed to be dead.””

Margaret stepped down one stair.

“So was your father. Apparently, death is a very flexible concept in this family.””

Vanessa tried to stand.

Margaret looked at her injured arm.

“Vanessa. I expected better from you.””

Vanessa glared.

“You used me.””

“I gave you an opportunity.””

“You promised my brother would be protected.””

Margaret's expression didn't change.

“And I kept my promise. He's alive, isn't he?””

Vanessa's face twisted.

Daniel looked at her.

“Your brother?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Her people took him when he was twelve. They told me I could keep him safe if I helped them.””

Margaret smiled.

“Everyone makes choices, Daniel. Some simply prefer pretending they didn't.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Where is Lily?””

Margaret looked at the tablet.

“She's with Thomas.””

“Bring her here.””

“Of course.””

She lifted her phone and pressed a button.

A moment later, the screen changed.

Thomas was no longer visible.

Lily sat alone in the room.

She was crying.

“Daddy?””

Daniel rushed toward the tablet.

“Lily! I'm here!””

Margaret tilted her head.

“Such a sweet child.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“If you touch her—”

Margaret interrupted.

“Do you know why I kept your father alive?””

Daniel said nothing.

“Because Thomas was the only person who knew where your grandfather hid the original trust documents.””

She pointed toward the ledger.

“And now you've brought them to me.””

Daniel looked down.

The black ledger was still in his hand.

Margaret extended her palm.

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

Her smile disappeared.

“Daniel, don't make this difficult.””

“You killed Rachel.””

“I corrected a problem.””

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You destroyed her life.””

Margaret looked at her.

“Rachel was unstable. She threatened to expose the family. She wanted to take the child away.””

“She was trying to protect Lily!””

Margaret sighed.

“And look where that got her.””

Daniel lunged forward.

Evelyn grabbed his arm.

“Daniel, no!””

Margaret raised her phone again.

The tablet showed Thomas returning to the room.

A man stood behind him, holding a gun.

Thomas was forced into a chair.

Lily was crying beside him.

Margaret spoke calmly.

“You have two choices. Give me the ledger, or I end this family tonight.””

Daniel looked at his father.

Then at Lily.

Then at Evelyn.

He slowly placed the ledger on the table.

Margaret smiled.

“Good boy.””

She stepped forward to collect it.

But before her fingers touched the cover, Vanessa pressed a button on the black device in her hand.

A loud alarm sounded throughout the building.

Red lights began flashing.

Margaret spun around.

“What have you done?””

Vanessa smiled through the pain.

“Something I should have done seven years ago.””

She pressed another button.

The tablet screen went black.

Then a recorded voice filled the basement.

Margaret's voice.

Clear.

Unmistakable.

“Rachel was unstable. She threatened to expose the family. She wanted to take the child away.””

The recording continued.

“Correct the problem.””

Margaret's face drained of color.

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“I recorded every conversation she had with me.””

Margaret lunged toward her.

Evelyn stepped between them.

Then the basement lights went out.

A crash echoed from the staircase.

Someone shouted.

Daniel grabbed the ledger and reached for Evelyn.

“Come on!””

They ran toward the side corridor.

Vanessa followed, clutching her injured arm.

Outside, sirens were approaching.

Daniel looked back.

Margaret was standing at the top of the stairs.

She wasn't running.

She was smiling.

“Daniel!”” she called.

He stopped.

She held up a small white envelope.

“You should ask your father who your real mother is.””

Daniel froze.

Margaret opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a woman holding a newborn baby.

A woman Daniel had never seen.

On the back, four words were written in his father's handwriting.

*YOUR MOTHER IS ALIVE.*

Daniel looked toward the tablet.

The screen suddenly lit up again.

Thomas's face appeared.

He was crying.

“Daniel,” he whispered.

“There's something I should have told you before you opened that vault.””

Daniel held his breath.

Thomas looked directly into the camera.

“Margaret isn't your grandmother.””

He paused.

May you like

“She's your mother.””

And somewhere behind him, Lily began screaming.
