Chapter 7: The Woman Who Stole Her Own Son's Life

“Margaret isn't your grandmother. She's your mother.””

Daniel stared at the tablet.

For a moment, the words didn't make sense.

He heard the sirens outside. He heard Evelyn calling his name. He heard Vanessa struggling to breathe through the pain in her injured arm.

But all he could see was the woman standing at the top of the staircase.

Margaret Hayes.

The woman who had attended his school plays.

The woman who had baked his birthday cakes.

The woman who had held his hand at his father's funeral.

His mother?

Daniel slowly turned toward Evelyn.

“Tell me he's lying.””

Evelyn didn't answer.

“Evelyn.””

She looked down.

“I'm sorry.””

Daniel stepped backward.

“No.””

“Daniel, please.””

“No. You don't get to stand there and tell me this is true.””

Margaret descended another step.

For the first time, her expression wasn't composed.

It was almost affectionate.

“Thomas should have told you years ago.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“Don't call him Thomas. He's my father.””

Margaret smiled sadly.

“Biologically, perhaps. But you have no idea how much of your life has been built on lies.””

“Are you my mother?””

Margaret tilted her head.

“Yes.””

The word landed like a physical blow.

Daniel shook his head.

“Then why did everyone tell me you were my grandmother?””

“Because I asked them to.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted to watch you grow up without being reminded of what I had sacrificed.””

Daniel laughed.

It wasn't a happy sound.

“You sacrificed nothing. You stole my entire life.””

Margaret's face hardened.

“I gave you a better one than the one you would have had.””

Behind Daniel, Evelyn reached for his hand.

He pulled away.

“Not now.””

She stopped.

Margaret continued down the staircase.

“You see, Daniel, when you were born, your grandfather had already begun building the Northbridge network. He needed an heir who could inherit the family trust without attracting attention.””

“And you decided to pretend to be my grandmother?””

“I was seventeen when I had you. My father took you from me and told everyone you had been adopted by Thomas.””

Daniel stared.

“Thomas raised me?””

“Yes. He loved you as his own. But he was never your biological father.””

Daniel looked toward the tablet.

Thomas's face was still visible.

“Is that true?””

Thomas nodded slowly.

“I raised you, Daniel. I was your father in every way that mattered.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because your grandfather threatened to destroy anyone who tried to expose the truth.””

Margaret laughed.

“Don't make yourself sound noble, Thomas. You enjoyed being the hero.””

Thomas ignored her.

“Daniel, I was afraid. I thought keeping you away from the truth would keep you safe.””

Daniel looked at the woman who had raised him and the woman who had given birth to him.

Neither seemed familiar anymore.

Then Lily's voice came through the tablet.

“Daddy!””

Daniel rushed toward the screen.

“Baby, I'm here!””

Lily was standing beside Thomas now.

Her cheeks were wet.

“Daddy, there's a lady here.””

Daniel's heart raced.

“What lady?””

A second figure entered the camera frame.

A woman wearing a dark blue coat.

She turned toward the screen.

Daniel stopped breathing.

Evelyn gasped.

“Rachel?””

The woman smiled.

“Hello, little sister.””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

Then at the screen.

Rachel Brooks.

The woman whose death had started everything.

The woman whose photograph had been hidden in the blue box.

The woman whose supposed murder had been used to explain Lily's identity.

She was alive.

Margaret's smile disappeared.

“That's impossible.””

Rachel looked directly into the camera.

“Not as impossible as pretending to be dead for seven years.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Who are you?””

Rachel looked at him.

“I'm the woman your grandmother tried to erase.””

Margaret snapped.

“Don't call me that.””

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“You've been pretending to be everyone's mother for so long that you've forgotten what the word means.””

Evelyn pressed a hand over her mouth.

“Rachel, I thought you were dead.””

“I know.””

“I buried you.””

“No, Evelyn. You buried a woman they wanted you to believe was me.””

Daniel's head was spinning.

“Can someone explain what's happening?””

Rachel looked toward him.

“Your biological mother is Margaret. Thomas is the man who raised you. And I am the person who gave birth to Lily.””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“Then why did you tell me Lily was yours?””

Evelyn's eyes filled.

“Because I promised Rachel I would protect her daughter.””

Rachel nodded.

“She became Lily's mother because I couldn't safely be one.””

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Why didn't you come back?””

Rachel's expression softened.

“Because the people who controlled Northbridge had access to everything. Your home. Your bank accounts.

Your phones. Your family records. If I had returned, they would have found Lily.””

Margaret stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Rachel looked at her.

“It's over.””

Margaret raised her phone.

“No. It isn't.””

She pressed a button.

The tablet screen went dark.

Then the sirens outside stopped.

Daniel looked toward the basement entrance.

“What happened?””

Vanessa checked her phone.

Her face changed.

“They've been diverted.””

“By who?””

She stared at Margaret.

“Her people.””

Margaret smiled.

“You should have known better than to trust a recording, Vanessa.””

She reached into her handbag and removed a small remote.

A red light flashed.

Daniel heard a mechanical click somewhere inside the building.

Evelyn grabbed his arm.

“Move!””

They ran through the side corridor.

Behind them, Margaret shouted.

“Daniel! You cannot run from your own blood!””

They reached the street.

Vanessa pointed toward an old delivery van parked near the alley.

“Get in!””

Daniel hesitated.

“Where are we going?””

“To the only person who can help us.””

“Who?””

Vanessa opened the driver's door.

“Your real father.””

Daniel froze.

“Thomas?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Your biological father.””

He stared.

“You just said Margaret was my mother.””

“Yes.””

“Then who is my father?””

Vanessa looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“Daniel, there's one more name in that ledger.””

She pulled a folded document from her coat.

At the top was a photograph of a man in his forties.

Beneath it was a name.

*JAMES WHITAKER.*

Daniel recognized him.

James had been his father's closest friend.

The man who had attended every Carter family Christmas.

The man who had taught Daniel to drive.

The man who had stood beside Thomas at his wedding.

The man who had disappeared shortly after Daniel's twentieth birthday.

Daniel stared at the photograph.

“James?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He was the man Margaret loved before she married Thomas.””

Daniel felt sick.

“He's my father?””

Evelyn nodded.

“Margaret had you with James. Thomas agreed to raise you because James was already involved with Northbridge.””

Daniel looked toward the dark street.

His entire childhood had been built around a lie.

Then Vanessa said something else.

“James is also the man who ordered Rachel's death.””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

“Why would he do that?””

Rachel's voice suddenly came through Vanessa's phone.

“Because he knows what Lily inherited.””

Daniel turned.

The screen showed Rachel sitting beside Lily.

She held up a small silver locket.

Inside it was a photograph of a newborn baby.

On the reverse was a tiny inscription.

*THE FIRST CARTER HEIR.*

Rachel looked directly into the camera.

“Daniel, Lily isn't just connected to the family trust.””

May you like

She paused.

“She's the legal owner of Northbridge Holdings.””
