Chapter 5: The Mother Who Came Back From the Dead

Daniel stepped away from Evelyn.
“What does that mean?””
Evelyn wiped her cheeks.
“It means they were looking for someone else.””
“Someone else?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did they take Lily?””
“Because they believe she has something Rachel left behind.””
Daniel's voice rose.
“Everyone keeps telling me what these people believe. Nobody tells me where my daughter is!””
Evelyn reached for his hand.
He pulled it away.
“Don't.””
Her eyes filled again.
“Daniel, please.””
“You let me bury you.””
“I know.””
“You let Lily cry beside an empty casket.””
“I know.””
“You let me believe I had lost my wife and my daughter was all I had left.””
Evelyn lowered her head.
“I didn't have a choice.””
“You always had a choice. You could have trusted me.””
She looked up.
“Your father trusted the wrong people. He paid for it.””
Daniel froze.
“What happened to him?””
Evelyn glanced toward Vanessa.
Vanessa slowly closed the basement door.
“Thomas is alive,” she said.
Daniel stared at his wife.
“You knew?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Your father has been hiding for twenty-six years.””
“Why?””
“Because he was the first person to discover what Northbridge was doing.””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Start from the beginning.””
Evelyn took a breath.
She sat on a metal chair beside the safe.
“Your grandfather founded the Carter bank. He believed banking should be about protecting families. But after he died, your father discovered that certain accounts were being used to move money through fake identities.””
“Northbridge.””
“Yes. At first, Thomas thought it was simple fraud. Then he found records showing that children were being assigned false identities.””
Daniel looked at the filing cabinets.
“Why children?””
“Because a child's identity can be used for decades. They created accounts, trusts, and insurance policies under names that didn't belong to the people using them.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“And some of those children were connected to wealthy families.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You were involved.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I was recruited as a financial administrator. I didn't know what I was signing at first.””
“That's convenient.””
“I know.””
“You were standing beside my wife when she was supposedly dead.””
“I helped her disappear.””
Daniel turned away.
Evelyn continued.
“Rachel was one of the children who discovered the program. She was older than me. She found out her birth records had been changed and that her original identity had been sold to a private foundation.””
Daniel sat opposite her.
“Rachel was your sister?””
Evelyn nodded.
“She was twenty-three when she had Lily. She was terrified. She knew the people behind Northbridge were looking for her.””
“And she died?””
Evelyn's eyes dropped.
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
“She was involved in a car accident. But it wasn't an accident.””
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
“Was she killed?””
Evelyn nodded.
“I was there when it happened.””
Silence filled the room.
“I was supposed to take Lily home that night,” Evelyn continued.
“Rachel had asked me to protect her. She gave me the original birth records and a recording.””
“What recording?””
“The statement that names the people responsible.””
Daniel looked at the safe.
“Is it in there?””
Evelyn nodded.
“But there's something else.””
She reached into her coat and removed a small photograph.
It showed a young woman holding a baby.
On the back was written:
*RACHEL BROOKS — OCTOBER 14, 2019.*
Daniel looked at the date.
“That's seven years ago.””
“Yes.””
He looked at Evelyn.
“Then why does the photograph look like it was taken yesterday?””
Evelyn hesitated.
“Because it was.””
Daniel stared.
“Rachel was alive?””
“No.””
“Then who is this?””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Her twin sister.””
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
Vanessa's face had gone completely still.
“There's another sister?”” he asked.
Evelyn nodded.
“Her name is Rebecca.””
Daniel felt the pieces rearranging themselves.
The woman who had called him.
The woman who claimed to work with Evelyn.
The woman who had given him the address.
“Rebecca is your sister?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't she tell me?””
“Because she was afraid you would recognize her.””
Daniel frowned.
“Recognize her from where?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Your father's old photographs.””
Before Daniel could respond, a metallic sound echoed from somewhere above them.
Vanessa immediately stood.
“Someone's inside.””
Evelyn rose.
“Did you bring the key?””
Daniel showed her the brass key marked 001.
Evelyn nodded.
“Open the safe.””
He turned toward the large steel box.
The lock had three keyholes.
The first accepted the brass key.
The second required a small numerical code.
The third was covered by a sliding metal plate.
“What's the code?”” Daniel asked.
Evelyn looked at him.
“Your father's birthday.””
Daniel entered the numbers.
The safe clicked.
The final lock remained closed.
Evelyn stepped forward.
“There's a fingerprint reader.””
Daniel stared.
“Whose fingerprint?””
“Thomas's.””
A sound came from the staircase.
Footsteps.
More than one person.
Vanessa reached into her bag and pulled out a small black device.
“Daniel, get behind me.””
He looked at her.
“What is that?””
“Something I should have used a long time ago.””
The lights flickered.
Then a voice came through a speaker hidden somewhere in the ceiling.
“Good evening, Mr. Carter.””
Daniel recognized the voice.
The man from the video.
“Thank you for bringing us the key.””
Evelyn grabbed Daniel's arm.
“Don't touch the safe!””
A second later, the basement door opened.
Two men entered.
One carried a handgun.
The other held a tablet.
Vanessa raised her hands.
“It's over.””
The man with the tablet laughed.
“Not quite.””
He looked at Daniel.
“Mr. Carter, I believe you have something that belongs to our organization.””
Daniel stepped in front of Evelyn.
“You took my daughter.””
“We temporarily relocated her.””
“Where is she?””
“Safe.””
“Prove it.””
The man tapped his tablet.
A live video appeared.
Lily was sitting in a small room.
Her hair was untidy, and her black dress had been replaced by a pink sweater.
She was crying.
“Daddy?””
Daniel nearly collapsed.
“Lily! Baby, I'm coming!””
The man turned the tablet away.
“Open the safe.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Daniel, don't.””
The man raised his gun.
“Open it, or the child loses her mother twice.””
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
Then at Vanessa.
Then at Lily's frozen image.
He moved toward the safe.
Evelyn grabbed his wrist.
“There's something you need to know.””
“What?””
“The fingerprint isn't your father's.””
Daniel frowned.
“Then whose?””
Evelyn looked directly into his eyes.
“Yours.””
He stared.
“Why would my fingerprint open it?””
“Because your father knew this day would come. He built the vault so only the next generation of the Carter family could access it.””
Daniel pressed his thumb against the reader.
A green light appeared.
The safe unlocked.
Inside was a thick black ledger, a small digital recorder, and a sealed document.
The man with the tablet stepped forward.
“Give me the ledger.””
Daniel picked it up.
“Where is Lily?””
The man smiled.
“First, the ledger.””
Daniel looked at the document.
It was an old birth certificate.
His name appeared under the heading:
*BIOLOGICAL FATHER: DANIEL THOMAS CARTER.*
He looked at Evelyn.
“What is this?””
Evelyn's eyes filled.
“Your father changed the records.””
Daniel turned the page.
A second name appeared.
*BIOLOGICAL MOTHER: RACHEL BROOKS.*
He looked up.
“Rachel was Lily's mother.””
Evelyn nodded.
“But there's another reason they want her.””
The man with the gun stepped closer.
“Enough.””
Evelyn suddenly grabbed the recorder from the safe.
She pressed play.
A man's voice filled the basement.
Thomas Carter.
“If you're hearing this, it means my son has finally opened the vault.””
Daniel's heart stopped.
His father's voice continued.
“Daniel, I need you to listen carefully. The truth about Lily is not the truth you have been told. Rachel was never the person who gave birth to her.””
Evelyn covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
“The child was born to someone inside our family. Someone who has spent seven years pretending to be dead.””
Daniel turned toward Evelyn.
She was crying now.
“Who?”” he whispered.
The recorder crackled.
Then Thomas said the name.
“Your sister, Daniel.””
The room went silent.
Daniel stared at Evelyn.
“I don't have a sister.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“Daniel...””
The man with the gun suddenly lunged toward the safe.
Vanessa struck his arm.
The gun fired.
The sound exploded through the basement.
And the recorder fell to the floor.
When the echo faded, Daniel saw blood spreading across Vanessa's sleeve.
But she was still standing.
Still holding the tablet.
And on its screen, Lily was no longer alone.
An older man had entered the room.
He leaned toward the camera.
Daniel recognized the face immediately.
His father.
May you like
Thomas Carter.
And he was holding a photograph of a newborn baby.
