Chapter 8: The Inheritance Nobody Was Supposed to Find

The van raced through the rain.
Daniel sat in the passenger seat, holding the black ledger against his chest.
Evelyn sat beside Vanessa in the back.
Nobody spoke for several minutes.
Then Daniel finally broke the silence.
“Where is Lily?””
Vanessa kept her eyes on the road.
“With Rachel.””
“Where?””
“An abandoned property near Savannah.””
“Then why are we driving in the opposite direction?””
“Because James knows where Rachel is.””
Daniel turned.
“And you know where James is?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He's at the original Northbridge headquarters.””
Daniel looked at the photograph again.
James Whitaker.
The man who had once carried him on his shoulders at a baseball game.
The man who had bought him his first bicycle.
The man who had told him that family was more important than money.
Daniel remembered one particular Christmas.
He had been eight years old.
James had given him a silver watch.
On the back, he had engraved:
For my favorite boy.
Daniel had thought it was a sweet gesture.
Now the memory made his skin crawl.
“Why did James disappear?”” he asked.
Evelyn looked toward him.
“Because he knew Thomas was planning to expose Northbridge.””
“And you knew who he was?””
“Yes.””
“You knew he was my biological father?””
“I found out three years ago.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Three years?””
Evelyn nodded.
“I was investigating Rachel's death. I found the original hospital records. Your name was listed under James and Margaret.””
Daniel looked away.
“You let me call another man Dad.””
“I let you have a father who loved you.””
His jaw tightened.
“You don't get to decide that for me.””
Evelyn lowered her head.
“I know.””
Vanessa turned onto a narrow road.
Ahead stood a large building with broken windows and a faded corporate sign.
*NORTHBRIDGE FINANCIAL GROUP.*
The headquarters had been abandoned for years.
At least, that was what the public believed.
Vanessa parked behind a row of trees.
“James uses the basement.””
Daniel opened the glove compartment.
Inside was a small flashlight and a folded map.
“What are we looking for?””
“The original trust records.””
“Why?””
“Because if Lily is the legal heir, we can freeze every account connected to Northbridge.””
Daniel studied the map.
“Then why didn't anyone do this before?””
“Because the trust was hidden behind a succession clause. Only the rightful heir can activate it.””
“And that's Lily?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Rachel gave birth to her. The Carter bloodline comes through your grandfather's firstborn son, Michael. Lily is the only surviving descendant of that branch.””
Daniel looked at Evelyn.
“Why does the ledger say I'm connected?””
“Because you were named as her legal guardian.””
He closed his eyes.
“So this whole thing was about money?””
“No,” Evelyn said.
She looked toward the building.
“It started with money. But now it's about control.””
They entered through a side door.
The hallway smelled of wet concrete and old paper.
Vanessa led them down a staircase.
At the bottom, a steel door stood partially open.
A light shone beneath it.
Voices came from inside.
Daniel recognized one immediately.
James.
“Everything is ready. The girl will be brought here before dawn.””
Another man answered.
“And the ledger?””
“Daniel has it.””
A pause.
Then James laughed.
“He'll bring it to me. He always trusted me.””
Daniel felt his stomach tighten.
Vanessa touched his shoulder.
“Wait.””
But Daniel had already pushed the door open.
James stood beside a long conference table.
He looked older than the man in Daniel's memories, but the smile was the same.
“Daniel.””
He opened his arms.
“Look at you.””
Daniel didn't move.
James lowered his hands.
“What's wrong?””
“You know exactly what's wrong.””
James looked at the ledger.
Then at Evelyn.
Then at Vanessa.
“I see we've brought the entire family together.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Where is Lily?””
James sighed.
“Still asking the wrong questions.””
“Where is my daughter?””
James smiled.
“She's safe.””
“You're lying.””
“Am I?””
He picked up a photograph from the table.
It showed Lily standing beside Rachel.
“She's a beautiful child. Rachel did a wonderful job raising her.””
Daniel clenched his fists.
“Don't say her name.””
James placed the photograph down.
“You know, when I first held you, I thought you would become something special.””
Daniel stared.
“You held me?””
“Of course. I was there the day you were born.””
“Then why did you let me believe Thomas was my father?””
James shrugged.
“Because Thomas wanted a family. Margaret wanted to protect her reputation. And I wanted to keep the business.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You destroyed people's lives.””
James laughed.
“People destroy their own lives, Daniel. I simply understand how the world works.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Rachel trusted you.””
James's expression darkened.
“Rachel was reckless.””
“She was your family.””
“She was a threat.””
“You ordered her death.””
James looked at Evelyn.
“I gave an instruction. Someone else carried it out.””
Daniel moved toward him.
“Who?””
James didn't answer.
Instead, he looked at Vanessa.
“Did you tell him about your brother?””
Vanessa stiffened.
James smiled.
“Perhaps you should.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“What brother?””
Vanessa looked down.
“His name is Marcus.””
James laughed.
“Marcus Reed. Your daughter's favorite uncle.””
Daniel stared.
“What does that have to do with Lily?””
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“Marcus was the driver on the night Rachel disappeared.””
Evelyn stepped backward.
“No.””
Vanessa nodded.
“He was twenty-one. James recruited him. He told him it was a simple job. A delivery.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You knew?””
“I found out afterward.””
“And you stayed with them?””
“I had no choice. They threatened Marcus.””
James smiled.
“Such a touching story.””
Vanessa suddenly pulled a small recording device from her pocket.
“Actually, I have something you'll want to hear.””
She pressed play.
James's voice filled the room.
“If Rachel refuses to hand over the child, remove her. The girl must remain available for the trust transfer.””
Then another voice.
Margaret.
“And what about Evelyn?””
James answered.
“She'll cooperate. She always does when Daniel is involved.””
The recording stopped.
James's smile disappeared.
Daniel looked at him.
“You ordered Rachel's murder.””
James reached for the device.
Vanessa stepped away.
“You're finished.””
James signaled to the man standing near the door.
The man pulled a gun.
“Put the recorder down.””
Vanessa raised her hands.
Daniel slowly placed the ledger on the table.
James smiled again.
“Good. Now we're making progress.””
He opened the ledger and flipped through the pages.
Then he stopped.
His expression changed.
“Where is the final page?””
Daniel said nothing.
James looked up.
“Where is it?””
Vanessa smiled.
“You don't know?””
James slammed the ledger shut.
“The final page contains the trust authorization.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“No. It contains the names of everyone who participated.””
James's eyes narrowed.
“Give it to me.””
Daniel pulled a folded sheet from his jacket.
James reached for it.
But Daniel didn't release it.
“Where's Lily?””
James sighed.
“You really do love that child.””
“She's my daughter.””
“Not biologically.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“She's my daughter.””
James stared at him.
Then he laughed.
“Do you know what I find fascinating? You spent your whole life believing family was about love. Your mother believed it was about status.
Thomas believed it was about sacrifice. And I believed it was about inheritance.””
He leaned closer.
“None of you understood that family is simply a business.””
Daniel looked at the final page.
Then at the recorder.
And suddenly he understood why James was so desperate.
The page wasn't simply a list of names.
It contained a handwritten clause.
A clause that transferred control of Northbridge to the rightful heir if the original trustees were found guilty of fraud.
Daniel smiled.
“You've already lost.””
James looked at him.
“What?””
Daniel held up his phone.
The recording was still running.
James glanced toward the security cameras.
Then toward the man with the gun.
“Take the phone.””
The man stepped forward.
A loud crash came from the hallway.
The basement door flew open.
Thomas Carter stood there.
He was holding a metal walking cane.
Behind him stood two uniformed officers.
“James Whitaker,” Thomas said.
James went pale.
“Thomas?””
Thomas looked at Daniel.
“I'm sorry I'm late, son.””
James backed away.
“You don't understand what's happening.””
Thomas raised his voice.
“I understand perfectly.””
The officers moved forward.
James reached for the gun.
But Vanessa struck his wrist with a metal chair.
The weapon fell.
Two officers tackled him to the floor.
Daniel rushed toward Thomas.
“Where is Lily?””
Thomas smiled sadly.
“Your daughter is safe.””
“Where?””
Thomas looked toward the hallway.
Then a small voice called out.
“Daddy?””
Daniel turned.
Lily ran into the room.
He dropped to his knees and caught her.
She wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Daddy!””
He held her tightly.
“I've got you, baby.””
Rachel entered behind her.
Evelyn rushed forward and embraced her sister.
For a moment, the room was filled with crying.
But the reunion was interrupted by a phone ringing.
James, handcuffed on the floor, began laughing.
Daniel looked at him.
“What?””
James tilted his head.
“You think catching me ends this?””
Thomas stepped forward.
“It's over, James.””
James smiled.
“No. You still haven't found the original trust.””
Daniel frowned.
“The ledger contains it.””
James shook his head.
“That's a copy.””
He looked at Lily.
“The original is in the one place nobody has thought to search.””
Rachel froze.
Evelyn slowly turned toward her.
Then both women spoke at the same time.
“The funeral home.””
Daniel felt his blood run cold.
May you like
James smiled.
“Now you're beginning to understand.””
