Chapter 10: The Person Behind The Plan

I stared at the message until the words blurred.

You think your father is the mastermind?

You have no idea who started this.

My first instinct was anger.

Then suspicion.

Then something worse.

Fear.

Not fear that someone would hurt me.

I had faced far worse situations in my career.

It was the fear of realizing that the truth I had uncovered might only be the surface.

I showed the message to Sarah.

Her expression changed immediately.

“Did you recognize the number?””

“No.””

“Did anyone else know about the hearing?””

I looked around the hallway outside the courtroom.

My father.

My mother.

Kevin.

My uncle.

The attorneys.

Anyone could have sent it.

Sarah took my phone.

“Don’t respond.””

“I wasn’t going to.””

She studied the screen.

“This changes things.””

“How?””

“Because someone knows we’re close to the truth.””

I looked toward the courtroom doors.

“My father?””

“Possibly.””

“But he’s already exposed.””

Sarah shook her head.

“People who are losing control don’t always stop.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because I knew it was true.

After the hearing, my father tried to approach me.

I almost walked away.

Almost.

But then I saw his face.

For the first time in my life, I didn’t see authority.

I saw desperation.

“Dani.””

I stopped.

“What?””

He looked around.

Like he was afraid someone would hear.

“I need to explain.””

I laughed quietly.

“Explain?””

His jaw tightened.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

I looked directly at him.

“You made decisions.””

His face fell.

“Your mother and I were trying to keep everything together.””

“You were trying to keep yourselves together.””

“That’s not fair.””

I stared at him.

“Fair?””

The word had become almost meaningless.

“You forged my identity.””

“I didn’t personally sign those documents.””

“But you used them.””

He looked away.

That small movement told me everything.

“Who helped you?””

His eyes flickered.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Someone else.

Someone he was protecting.

“Dad.””

He stayed silent.

“Who?””

Finally, he whispered:

“You don’t understand how this started.””

“Then tell me.””

He looked exhausted.

“It wasn’t about Kevin.””

That caught my attention.

“What?””

“The business. The loans. The documents.””

He swallowed.

“It started before that.””

My stomach tightened.

“How long?””

He looked at me.

“Almost three years.””

Three years.

I felt the hallway spin slightly.

Three years ago, I was still overseas.

Still trusting them.

Still believing every message from home.

“What happened three years ago?””

My father looked toward the exit.

Then back at me.

“I made a deal.””

“With who?””

He didn’t answer.

And that was when Sarah stepped forward.

“Mr. Carter.””

My father looked at her.

“If you have information relevant to the case, now would be the time.””

His face hardened.

“I don’t need a lawyer telling me how to talk to my daughter.””

Sarah didn’t move.

“No.””

She looked at him.

“You need someone to remind you that your daughter is no longer protecting you.””

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

My entire life, I had protected him.

Protected his image.

Protected his pride.

Protected the idea that my family was good.

But that version of my family was gone.

My father finally spoke.

“There was an investor.””

I frowned.

“Investor?””

“Yes.””

“For your company?””

He nodded.

“He offered money.””

“How much?””

“Enough to save everything.””

“And what did he want?””

My father looked away.

“That’s the problem.””

“What did he want?””

His voice dropped.

“He wanted control.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Control of what?””

“My company.””

“That’s it?””

My father hesitated.

“No.””

I waited.

“He wanted access to our family assets.””

I understood immediately.

“Me.””

My father didn’t answer.

But he didn’t need to.

“You used me as collateral.””

His face tightened.

“I thought I could fix it.””

“You thought you could fix it before I came home.””

“Yes.””

“Before I asked questions.””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“So the whole thing…”

My voice became quiet.

“The wedding. The truck. The loans.””

“Those were supposed to cover the losses.””

I stared at him.

“Kevin’s wedding was never the problem.””

“No.””

He looked broken.

“The problem was that we were running out of time.””

I looked at Sarah.

She understood immediately.

“Who is the investor?””

My father didn’t answer.

“Robert.””

He closed his eyes.

Then he whispered:

“Victor Hale.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But the fear in my father’s voice did.

Sarah immediately went still.

“What?””

My father looked at her.

“You know him?””

Sarah didn’t respond.

That scared me.

“Sarah?””

She took a breath.

“Yes.””

“Who is he?””

She looked at me.

“Dani, Victor Hale is not just an investor.””

“Then what is he?””

Her voice lowered.

“He specializes in buying struggling businesses.””

“That doesn’t sound illegal.””

“No.””

She paused.

“But he has a reputation.””

“For what?””

“Finding people who are desperate.””

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

My father whispered:

“He knew exactly what he was doing.””

I looked at him.

“You mean he manipulated you?””

My father looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

“And then you manipulated me.””

He had no answer.

Because that was the truth.

The person who hurt me had been hurt by someone else.

But pain did not erase responsibility.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

Same unknown number.

This time, there was an attachment.

A photo.

I opened it.

My blood froze.

It was a picture of me.

Taken outside my house.

Yesterday.

Someone had been watching me.

Then another message appeared.

*Ask your father why Victor knows your deployment schedule.*

I looked up.

My father had gone pale.

Because he knew.

May you like

And that meant the person behind this wasn’t just interested in my money.

They had been studying me.
