Chapter 9: The Trial Of My Own Blood

The courtroom was colder than I expected.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

The kind of cold that came from sitting across from people who used to know your favorite meal.

Who knew your childhood stories.

Who knew exactly how to hurt you.

My father sat on the other side of the room.

Wearing a suit.

Looking respectable.

Like the man everyone in town trusted.

Nobody looking at him would have guessed he had spent months building a case against his own daughter.

My mother sat behind him.

She couldn’t look at me.

Kevin sat alone.

On my side.

That was the strangest sight of all.

The brother who caused the damage was now the only person in my family willing to stand beside me.

The judge reviewed the documents.

Sarah stood beside me.

Calm.

Focused.

Prepared.

My father’s attorney approached the table.

“Ms. Carter, you are aware these documents bear your signature?””

“Yes.””

“And you deny signing them?””

“Yes.””

“Even though your name appears clearly?””

“Yes.””

He smiled slightly.

The kind of smile people used when they thought they had already won.

“Isn’t it true that you have financially supported your family for years?””

“Yes.””

“Isn’t it true that you have willingly provided money?””

“Yes.””

“So you have a history of helping them.””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

“Then why is it difficult to believe you agreed to help again?””

I almost laughed.

Because that was the entire plan.

Use my kindness as evidence against me.

“I helped my family.””

I spoke clearly.

“I did not give them permission to become me.””

The courtroom went quiet.

The attorney looked annoyed.

He returned to his papers.

“Let’s discuss the property transfer.””

Sarah immediately stood.

“Objection. The validity of that transfer is precisely what is being disputed.””

The judge allowed it.

The attorney continued.

“Ms. Carter, you have no memory of authorizing this transfer?””

“No.””

“Convenient.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

My voice remained calm.

“It’s not convenient. It’s true.””

Then Sarah stood.

“Your Honor, we would like to submit new evidence.””

The judge nodded.

Sarah handed over a file.

The attorney frowned.

“What is this?””

“Digital records.””

The courtroom shifted.

Sarah continued.

“These records show the documents were created while Ms. Carter was deployed overseas.””

My father’s attorney looked toward him.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

Concern.

Sarah continued.

“They also show that the signatures were copied from previous documents.””

The judge looked up.

“Do you have proof?””

“Yes.””

Sarah turned.

“Call the witness.””

The doors opened.

Everyone looked back.

And my uncle walked in.

My father’s face changed.

For the first time since this began…

He looked afraid.

My uncle avoided his eyes.

He sat down.

The room became silent.

Sarah approached.

“Mr. Carter, do you know the defendant?””

My uncle nodded.

“Yes.””

“Do you know Robert Carter?””

“Yes.””

“Did you assist him with financial documents?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

My father shifted.

Sarah continued.

“Did you help prepare documents using Danielle Carter’s information?””

My uncle looked at my father.

Then back at Sarah.

“Yes.””

The room erupted.

My father stood.

“This is ridiculous.””

The judge ordered silence.

Sarah continued.

“Did Danielle Carter authorize these documents?””

My uncle closed his eyes.

“No.””

My chest tightened.

The truth was finally being spoken.

Out loud.

In front of everyone.

“No,” my uncle repeated.

“She didn’t.””

Sarah looked at him.

“Then why were they created?””

My uncle swallowed.

“Because Robert believed she would never agree.””

My father stared at him.

“You promised.””

The entire courtroom heard it.

My uncle froze.

So did my father.

Sarah slowly turned toward him.

“Promised what?””

Nobody moved.

My father realized too late.

He had exposed himself.

The judge leaned forward.

“Mr. Carter?””

My father said nothing.

And then Sarah played the recording.

His own voice filled the courtroom.

“She was never supposed to come home and ask questions.””

Nobody looked at me.

They looked at him.

For the first time, everyone saw what I had seen.

Not a father trying to help his son.

Not a man making mistakes.

A man who believed his daughter’s absence made her easier to control.

When the recording ended, the silence was overwhelming.

Then my father whispered:

“Dani…”

I looked at him.

The man who raised me.

The man who betrayed me.

And I realized something.

The hardest battle of my life was never overseas.

It was coming home.

The judge called for a recess.

As everyone stood, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From an unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*You think your father is the mastermind?*

My blood went cold.

May you like

Another message appeared.

*You have no idea who started this.*
