Chapter 11: The Enemy Who Knew My Name
I didn’t tell my father about the message.
Not immediately.
For once, I kept information from my family.
And the irony wasn’t lost on me.
For years, I had been an open book.
They knew my schedule.
My finances.
My plans.
My fears.
Everything.
But I knew almost nothing about them.
That ended now.
Sarah helped me investigate Victor Hale.
The more we found, the worse it became.
Not because Victor was some obvious criminal.
That would have been easier.
He was worse.
He was respected.
Successful.
Charismatic.
The kind of person people trusted because he looked like someone who had never needed to break rules.
“He owns multiple investment companies,” Sarah explained.
“Any criminal history?””
“No.””
“That’s good, right?””
She shook her head.
“Not always.””
I looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
“It means he knows how to stay clean.””
That sentence bothered me.
Because I understood people like that.
The ones who never got their hands dirty.
They just convinced other people to do it.
The next morning, Kevin called.
“Dani.””
His voice sounded nervous.
“I found something.””
I closed my eyes.
“What now?””
“Something about Victor.””
I sat down.
“Tell me.””
“Dad didn’t meet him randomly.””
“What do you mean?””
“They knew each other before the investment.””
“How?””
Kevin hesitated.
“Through Uncle Michael.””
My uncle.
The witness.
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Explain.””
“I found old emails.””
“Between who?””
“Dad and Michael.””
“What did they say?””
Kevin was quiet.
Then:
“They were looking for someone to buy the company.””
I frowned.
“So?””
“So they weren’t trying to save it.””
The room went silent.
“What?””
“They wanted to sell.””
I stood.
“Why would they need my information?””
Kevin’s answer came slowly.
“Because Victor didn’t want the company.””
My heart started pounding.
“What did he want?””
Kevin whispered:
“Your property.””
Everything went still.
The house.
The documents.
The fake signatures.
The transfer.
It all connected.
Victor wasn’t investing in my father’s company.
He was positioning himself to take what my father couldn’t legally sell.
Me.
My assets.
My future.
I immediately called Sarah.
She answered after one ring.
“Tell me you found something.””
“Victor wasn’t interested in Dad’s business.””
Silence.
Then:
“What?””
“He wanted my property.””
Sarah became quiet.
“Dani…”
“What?””
“You need to hear something.””
Her tone worried me.
“What?””
“We found a connection between Victor and your family.””
“How?””
“Your mother.””
I froze.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
“No.””
“I’m sorry.””
I stood still.
“What connection?””
Sarah sighed.
“She worked with him.””
The room became silent.
“No.””
“Dani—”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“My mother didn’t know him.””
Sarah didn’t say anything.
That was the worst answer.
“What?””
“She knew him before your father did.””
I sat down.
“When?””
“Twenty years ago.””
The words hit me.
Twenty years.
The exact time I joined the military.
The exact time I started building a life away from home.
“What happened?””
Sarah paused.
“I think your mother has been hiding something from you.””
I drove to my parents’ house immediately.
Not angry.
Not emotional.
Focused.
My mother opened the door.
When she saw my face, she knew.
“What did you find?””
I stared at her.
“You knew Victor Hale.””
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
“Since when?””
She looked away.
“Before you joined the Army.””
I stepped inside.
“Why?””
She sat down.
“Because he helped us.””
“With what?””
She was quiet.
“Financial problems.””
I laughed.
“Of course.””
She looked hurt.
“Dani—”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Everyone keeps saying the same thing.””
“What?””
“We had problems.””
She looked down.
“And somehow, I became the solution.””
Tears filled her eyes.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She was silent for a long time.
Finally, she said:
“When you were younger, your father lost almost everything.””
I listened.
“Victor offered help.””
“And?””
“He wanted a favor.””
“What favor?””
She looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Terrified.
“He wanted information.””
“About what?””
Her voice dropped.
“About you.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What kind of information?””
She looked at me.
“Your career plans.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
She didn’t answer.
“Mom.””
She whispered:
“Because Victor knew you were going places.””
I stared.
“That makes no sense.””
She started crying.
“Dani…”
“What?””
“He knew you would become successful.””
Silence.
“And he wanted access to that success.””
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from Victor Hale.
Not unknown.
Victor Hale.
The message said:
*Your mother is finally telling you the truth. Good.*
I stared at the screen.
Then another message appeared.
*But she hasn’t told you the most important part.*
I looked at my mother.
She had seen the name.
May you like
And her face turned completely white.
Because she knew what was coming.
