Chapter 2: The Boss’s Secret
Nobody moved.
Not one person.
The entire room was waiting.
Waiting for Richard Hale to explain why the man who had just received a promotion was suddenly standing like a criminal caught in court.
Daniel looked from Richard to me.
“Richard,” he said carefully.
“This isn’t the place.””
Richard didn’t blink.
“You’re right.””
He opened the file.
“That’s why I should have done this months ago.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Don’t.””
One word.
But it carried fear.
Richard placed several documents on the table.
“I reviewed the promotion process after receiving information about financial misconduct.””
The room erupted.
“Financial misconduct?””
“Daniel?””
“What is happening?””
Daniel looked around desperately.
“Everyone needs to calm down.””
I almost smiled.
That was his favorite sentence.
Calm down.
Forget.
Move on.
Pretend.
Richard looked at him.
“You used company accounts to cover personal debts.””
Daniel shook his head immediately.
“That’s impossible.””
“I have the records.””
“You’re misunderstanding.””
Richard leaned closer.
“No. I’m finally understanding.””
The words hit harder than any accusation I had made.
I watched Daniel’s face.
For years, I had wondered what it would take for him to finally admit what he did.
Apparently, it wasn’t my pain.
It wasn’t my tears.
It wasn’t watching me pack my bags after discovering his lies.
It was losing his image.
“Emily,” Daniel said suddenly.
His eyes turned toward me.
“Don’t listen to him.””
I stared at him.
“Why?””
“Because he’s trying to destroy me.””
I looked at Richard.
Then back at Daniel.
“You destroyed yourself.””
The room went silent again.
Daniel walked toward me.
“You’re my wife.””
The way he said it sounded like an accusation.
As if being my husband gave him ownership over me.
“I gave you everything.””
I laughed quietly.
“Everything?””
My voice shook.
“No, Daniel. You gave me excuses.””
His face tightened.
“You think leaving me makes you innocent?””
That sentence surprised me.
Not because it hurt.
Because it confirmed everything.
Even now, he wasn’t sorry.
He was angry that I stopped accepting it.
Richard looked at me.
“Mrs. Carter, there’s something else.””
I turned.
“What?””
He hesitated.
Then he handed me another document.
I read the first line.
And my hands went cold.
A bank transfer.
Daniel’s name.
A large amount of money.
But the account receiving it wasn’t a casino.
It wasn’t a gambling company.
It was mine.
My savings account.
The account I thought only I knew about.
“No,” I whispered.
Daniel looked away.
That was enough.
“Daniel.””
He didn’t answer.
“Did you take money from my account?””
His silence was the answer.
The room watched as ten years of marriage collapsed in front of them.
I remembered every time he told me we were struggling.
Every time he said we needed to be careful.
Every time I skipped buying things for myself because I thought we were building a future.
Meanwhile, he was stealing from the woman trying to build it with him.
“I trusted you,” I said.
Daniel’s expression changed.
For a second, I saw the man I married.
The man who held my hand during my father’s funeral.
The man who promised me forever.
Then it disappeared.
“I was going to pay it back.””
I stared at him.
“That’s your excuse?””
“It wasn’t like that.””
“How was it?””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because there was no explanation.
Only the truth.
Richard gathered the papers.
“I’m sorry, Emily.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His eyes lowered.
“Because I should have warned you sooner.””
A strange feeling moved through me.
“What do you mean?””
Richard looked at Daniel.
“Your husband wasn’t just hiding gambling debts.””
Daniel’s face changed instantly.
“Stop.””
Richard ignored him.
“He was also hiding why I became suspicious of him in the first place.””
I felt my heartbeat slow.
“What are you saying?””
Richard took a breath.
Then he said:
“Daniel wasn’t sleeping with someone to get promoted.””
Everyone looked confused.
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
Richard looked directly at me.
“He was sleeping with someone to stop me from discovering what he had done.””
The room went silent.
And then Richard said a name.
A name I had never expected to hear.
“Your sister, Claire.””
May you like
The glass slipped from my hand.
And shattered on the floor.
