Chapter 5: The Truth Before The Wedding

I didn’t sleep.

Not because I was heartbroken.

Because I was angry.

Anger was different.

Pain made you collapse.

Anger made you stand.

The next morning, I went to Richard Hale’s office.

He looked surprised when I walked in.

“Emily.””

I placed the note on his desk.

His expression changed instantly.

“You kept this.””

“You wrote it.””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Richard sat slowly.

“Because ten years ago, I made a mistake.””

I crossed my arms.

“I’m tired of hearing that word.””

He looked at me.

“You deserve the truth.””

I waited.

Richard took a breath.

“Before you married Daniel, he was already in trouble.””

My stomach tightened.

“What kind of trouble?””

“Debt. Gambling. Bad decisions.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So nothing new.””

Richard didn’t smile.

“No. But there was something else.””

He opened a drawer.

Inside was an old photograph.

Daniel.

Claire.

And Richard.

Together.

My hands went cold.

“You knew Claire?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Richard looked away.

“Because Claire worked at my company.””

The pieces started connecting.

“She introduced Daniel to you?””

“No.””

His voice became serious.

“She introduced Daniel to opportunities.””

I stared.

“Claire helped him?””

Richard nodded.

“She believed Daniel deserved success.””

I felt sick.

My own sister.

Helping destroy me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Richard looked ashamed.

“Because Daniel threatened to ruin Claire.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He told me if I exposed him, Claire’s life would collapse too.””

I looked at him.

“And you believed him?””

“I was wrong.””

The room was silent.

Then Richard said something I never expected.

“Emily, your husband wasn’t promoted because he was talented.””

I waited.

“He was promoted because I was trying to keep him close enough to expose him.””

I stared.

“You used his promotion as bait?””

“Yes.””

“And my marriage?””

Richard looked down.

“I didn’t know how far it would go.””

I walked to the window.

Outside, people moved through the city.

Living normal lives.

While mine had been destroyed behind closed doors.

“Where is Daniel now?””

Richard hesitated.

“Why?””

“Because I want to hear him admit it.””

That evening, Daniel came to the house.

The same house where he had promised forever.

The same house where he had lied.

He looked exhausted.

“Emily.””

I sat across from him.

“No more lies.””

He nodded.

For once, he didn’t argue.

“I was afraid.””

I looked at him.

“That’s your explanation?””

“Yes.””

“Afraid of what?””

“Being nobody.””

The honesty surprised me.

Daniel looked down.

“I thought if I became successful, everyone would finally respect me.””

“So you destroyed everyone who loved you?””

He closed his eyes.

“I made choices.””

“Yes.””

I leaned forward.

“You did.””

For a moment, he looked like the man I married.

Then he said:

“There’s one more thing.””

I felt my body tense.

“What now?””

He reached into his pocket.

And placed a small envelope on the table.

“I never wanted you to see this.””

I opened it.

Inside was an old letter.

My father’s handwriting.

My father had been dead for five years.

I read the first sentence.

“Emily, if Daniel ever betrays you, there is something you need to know about the day you met him.””

I looked up.

Daniel was crying.

And for the first time, I didn’t feel sorry for him.

Because I realized something.

My marriage hadn’t fallen apart tonight.

It had been broken long before I knew.

I turned the page.

And read the secret my father had taken to his grave.

A secret about Daniel.

May you like

A secret about my family.

And a secret that would finally explain why everyone had fought so hard to keep me in the dark.
