Chapter 3: The Sister I Trusted
I didn’t hear the glass break.
I only saw everyone staring.
I only heard one name repeating in my mind.
Claire.
My little sister.
The person I defended my entire life.
The person who cried on my shoulder after every breakup.
The person who stood beside me on my wedding day and told me I was the luckiest woman alive.
“No,” I whispered.
Daniel looked terrified.
Not guilty.
Terrified.
Richard continued.
“I didn’t know at first. I only knew someone was manipulating financial records.””
I looked at Daniel.
“You and Claire?””
He said nothing.
That silence was louder than any confession.
I walked backward.
My chest felt tight.
“You’re lying.””
Daniel finally spoke.
“Emily, listen to me.””
“No.””
“Please.””
That word almost made me laugh.
Daniel Carter saying please.
The same man who never apologized.
The same man who always found a way to blame me.
“Tell me I’m wrong,” I said.
He stared at me.
“Emily…”
“Tell me.””
He couldn’t.
And that was when I knew.
The last piece of my marriage had disappeared.
I left the ballroom without looking back.
The cold night air hit my face as soon as I stepped outside.
For ten minutes, I stood there.
Not crying.
Not screaming.
Just standing.
Because sometimes pain is too large for tears.
A few minutes later, Richard came outside.
“I’m sorry.””
I didn’t turn.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Six months.””
I finally looked at him.
“Six months?””
Richard looked ashamed.
“I was trying to gather proof.””
“You watched me live with that man while you collected proof?””
His silence answered.
I walked away.
The next morning, I went to my sister’s apartment.
I didn’t call.
I didn’t text.
I needed to see her face when she realized I knew.
Claire opened the door wearing a silk robe.
She smiled.
Then she saw me.
The smile disappeared.
“Emily?””
I stepped inside.
“Were you going to tell me?””
Her face went pale.
“Tell you what?””
I looked around.
Expensive furniture.
Designer bags.
Things Claire could never afford.
“How long?””
She closed the door slowly.
“Emily…”
“How long were you sleeping with my husband?””
The silence was immediate.
Claire sat down.
And for the first time in my life, I saw fear on her face.
“I didn’t mean for this to happen.””
I laughed.
A broken laugh.
“You didn’t mean for this to happen?””
She wiped her eyes.
“I was lonely.””
“Lonely?””
I stared at her.
“You had me.””
Her face changed.
“You always had everything.””
The words shocked me.
“What?””
Claire stood.
“You had the perfect life. The perfect husband. Everyone loved you.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“So you destroyed it?””
“I didn’t destroy anything.””
“You helped him.””
She looked away.
That was enough.
I left.
But before I reached my car, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A woman spoke.
“Emily Carter?””
“Yes.””
“You don’t know me.””
“Who are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“My name is Vanessa.””
My blood ran cold.
“Vanessa who?””
The woman whispered:
“Vanessa Reed.””
I knew that name.
Because it was the name Daniel had deleted from his phone.
The name of the woman I thought was the affair.
“I need to tell you the truth,” she said.
“What truth?””
Her voice shook.
“Claire wasn’t Daniel’s first secret.””
I froze.
“What do you mean?””
She took a breath.
“Your husband has been planning something much worse.””
The call suddenly cut.
And seconds later, a message appeared on my phone.
One photo.
One document.
May you like
And one sentence underneath:
“Ask your husband why your name is on a loan agreement you never signed.””
