Chapter 3: The Blue Envelope

The hospital smelled of disinfectant, coffee, and the cold metallic air that drifted through the automatic doors whenever someone entered.

Andre stood beneath fluorescent lights with Zoe clinging to his hand, staring at the double doors beyond which the medical team had taken Camilla.

A wall clock ticked above the reception desk.

Every second felt like a threat.

“Sir?”” A nurse approached him.

“Are you Andre Mitchell?””

“Yes. Is my wife okay?””

“The doctors are examining her now. They know she's pregnant, and they're aware of the circumstances you described. They'll speak with you as soon as they can.””

“And the baby?””

“I understand you're worried. The team is assessing both your wife's condition and the pregnancy.””

Andre nodded, although the answer did little to ease the pressure in his chest.

Zoe tugged at his sleeve.

“Can we see Mommy?””

“Not yet, sweetheart.””

“But I want her.””

“I know.””

She looked down at her coral-orange dress, twisting the fabric between her fingers.

“Mommy promised she'd read me a story tonight.””

Andre crouched in front of her.

“She still might.””

“You said that before.””

The words struck him with quiet force.

He drew her into his arms.

“I’m sorry, baby.””

Zoe began to cry again, and Andre held her while the hospital moved around them.

A phone rang at the reception desk. A cart rattled past. Somewhere down the corridor, a child laughed.

Ordinary life continued.

Andre hated it.

His phone vibrated again.

This time, it was Detective Harris, one of the officers who had responded to the penthouse.

“Mr. Mitchell,” Harris said when Andre answered, “we need to ask you some questions about what happened.””

“Have you arrested Valeria?””

“We're speaking with her. Another officer is securing the scene and documenting the items found there.””

“Did you find the vial?””

“Yes. It's being handled as potential evidence. We don't know what's in it, and we're not drawing conclusions until the appropriate testing is done.””

Andre rubbed his forehead.

“What about the handbag?””

“It's being documented as well. We found a few items that may be relevant, but I can't discuss everything over the phone.””

“Detective, she said my wife wasn't supposed to find out something. My daughter heard her talking about papers.””

There was a brief silence.

“Papers?””

“Yes. Zoe said Camilla was frightened.””

“Did your daughter say anything more specific?””

Andre looked down at Zoe.

“She mentioned a blue envelope.””

Harris's voice became more focused.

“Mr. Mitchell, do you know of any documents your wife might have been keeping from you?””

Andre opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

Three weeks earlier, Camilla had asked him to review a document concerning their family trust.

He had been on a conference call with investors. She had placed the papers beside his laptop and asked him to read them before signing.

He remembered the blue envelope.

He remembered Valeria sitting at the kitchen island, stirring coffee she never drank.

And he remembered Camilla taking the documents away after he told her he would look at them that evening.

He never had.

“Detective,” Andre said slowly, “I need to check something.””

“Don't disturb anything at the scene. We'll coordinate with you before you return to the apartment.””

“I understand.””

“And Mr. Mitchell?””

“Yes?””

“If you receive any more messages related to this incident, don't delete them. Save them for the investigation.””

Andre looked at the unknown number on his screen.

“I already have one.””

“Forward it to the officer handling your case. We'll follow up.””

When the call ended, Andre stared at the message again.

*DON'T LET VALERIA LEAVE WITH THE BLUE ENVELOPE. ASK YOUR WIFE WHAT SHE SIGNED.*

He called his attorney, Marcus Reed.

Marcus answered on the second ring.

“Andre? What's wrong?””

“Camilla's in the hospital. Someone may have poisoned her.””

A sharp silence followed.

“What do you mean, may have?””

“I found a vial beside Valeria's handbag. Camilla was unconscious. The police are investigating.””

“Is Camilla stable?””

“I don't know.””

“I'm coming to the hospital. But first, tell me why you mentioned Valeria.””

Andre glanced toward the double doors.

“She was there. She said Camilla wasn't supposed to find something out.””

Marcus exhaled.

“Did Camilla tell you about the trust documents?””

Andre's stomach tightened.

“You know about them?””

“I prepared the initial paperwork. Camilla called me last week and asked for a private meeting.””

“About what?””

“She wouldn't discuss it over the phone. She said she had discovered an irregularity and needed to verify something before making a formal complaint.””

“What kind of irregularity?””

“I don't know yet. She asked me to keep the appointment confidential.””

Andre gripped the phone harder.

“Was it about money?””

“Possibly. Andre, listen to me carefully. Don't accuse anyone publicly, and don't sign anything until we've reviewed the documents.””

Andre looked at Zoe, who had fallen quiet against his side.

“Marcus, I think my wife knew she was in danger.””

“Then we need to understand what she discovered.””

Before Andre could answer, a doctor emerged from the double doors.

He was a middle-aged Black man wearing blue scrubs, a white coat, and an expression that was serious but not hopeless.

“Mr. Mitchell?””

Andre ended the call.

“I'm her husband. How is she?””

“Your wife is receiving treatment. She's still unconscious, and we're continuing our investigation into the cause. We haven't confirmed what led to her collapse.””

Andre swallowed.

“What about the baby?””

“We're monitoring the pregnancy closely. It's too early to give you a definitive answer, but we're taking every precaution.””

“Can I see her?””

“For a few minutes, once the team finishes the next assessment. You'll need to follow the nurse's instructions.””

Andre nodded rapidly.

“Thank you. Thank you, Doctor.””

The doctor rested a hand briefly on his shoulder.

“We know this is frightening. We'll update you as soon as we have more information.””

When he walked away, Andre leaned against the wall.

Zoe looked up at him.

“Is Mommy going to wake up?””

He brushed a curl away from her wet cheek.

“That's what we're praying for.””

“Can I tell her I love her?””

“You can tell her as many times as you want.””

A nurse eventually led Andre into Camilla's room.

The machines surrounding the bed made soft, steady sounds. An oxygen line rested near Camilla's face, and a monitor displayed her vital signs.

She looked smaller than he had ever seen her.

Andre pulled a chair close to the bed.

“Hey, baby,” he whispered.

“I'm here.””

He took her hand carefully.

“Zoe's here, too. She's waiting to see you. She wants you to read her a story tonight.””

His voice faltered.

“You can't leave us, Camilla. Not like this.””

For several seconds, he sat in silence, listening to the monitor.

Then he noticed the faint outline of a hospital wristband beneath the blanket and remembered how Camilla used to complain about the cheap bracelets at their prenatal appointments.

She had been so excited about the baby.

She had picked out a name.

She had painted the nursery lavender and white.

She had told him that their family was about to become something even more beautiful.

Andre bent his head over her hand.

“Whatever happened, I'll find out,” he whispered.

“I promise.””

His phone vibrated.

Marcus had sent a message.

*I checked the trust records. Camilla requested an urgent review because a beneficiary change was submitted last month. The document carries your signature.*

Andre stared at the screen.

He had never authorized a beneficiary change.

Another message appeared.

*The change transfers control of the family trust to Valeria if Camilla becomes incapacitated.*

Andre stopped breathing for a moment.

He looked at Camilla, then back at the screen.

The timing was too precise to ignore.

A new message followed.

*There's one more problem. The signature was notarized yesterday.*

Andre's fingers went cold.

Yesterday, he had been in Chicago for a business conference.

He had hotel receipts, flight records, and a dozen colleagues who could confirm it.

He had not signed anything.

Someone had forged his name.

Someone had arranged for Valeria to gain control of the family trust if his pregnant wife became incapacitated.

And now Camilla lay unconscious in a hospital bed.

Andre stepped into the corridor and called Marcus immediately.

“Tell me you can prove that signature is fake.””

“I can start verifying it,” Marcus replied.

“But there's something else you need to know.””

“What?””

“The document doesn't just transfer control. It contains a clause that activates if Camilla is declared medically incapacitated for more than seventy-two hours.””

Andre stared through the glass at his wife.

“Seventy-two hours?””

“Yes.””

“Why would anyone put that clause in a family trust?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Because whoever prepared this document may have expected Camilla to be unable to challenge it.””

Andre's jaw tightened.

“Valeria.””

“It's a possibility. But we need evidence, not assumptions.””

Andre looked at the clock.

The minutes were slipping away.

Then a nurse hurried into the room, followed by another member of the medical team.

Andre turned toward them.

“What's happening?””

“Mr. Mitchell, we need you to step outside for a moment.””

“Why? What happened to my wife?””

The nurse didn't answer immediately.

Inside the room, the monitor's rhythm changed, and the doctor called for additional assistance.

Andre stepped backward, his heart pounding.

Through the glass, he watched the team gather around Camilla's bed.

Then his phone rang.

It was Detective Harris.

“Mr. Mitchell, we've recovered a document from Valeria's handbag,” the detective said urgently.

“We need you to come to the station when you can.””

“What document?””

“A copy of the trust amendment.””

Andre stared at the hospital doors.

“That's impossible. She couldn't have—”

“There's something written on the back,” Harris interrupted.

“A handwritten note. It appears to be a message to someone else.””

Andre's throat tightened.

“What does it say?””

The detective paused.

Then he read the words aloud.

“Once Camilla is unconscious, make sure Andre never sees the original.””

Andre looked through the glass at his wife.

And suddenly, he understood the most terrifying possibility of all.

May you like

Valeria hadn't simply been afraid of what Camilla might reveal.

She had been waiting for Camilla to become unable to reveal it.
