Chapter 5: The Secret Inside the Wall

By sunrise, Andre had learned two things.

Camilla was still unconscious, and the police had not found the original blue envelope.

The second fact frightened him more than he wanted to admit.

He sat beside his wife's hospital bed while Zoe slept curled beneath a blanket on the small sofa. Every few minutes, he checked Camilla's breathing, although the monitor beside her already displayed the information he needed.

He had barely slept.

At 6:17 a.m., Marcus called.

"We have a problem," his attorney said.

Andre stood and moved toward the window.

"Tell me.""

"The trust's financial administrator received an electronic instruction overnight. It requests an immediate transfer of the remaining liquid assets into a temporary holding account.""

"Who authorized it?""

"The request carries your digital signature.""

Andre stared at the city waking beyond the glass.

"I didn't authorize anything.""

"I know. I've already instructed the administrator to freeze the request pending verification. But someone is actively trying to move the money.""

"Can you trace the account?""

"I'm working on it.""

Andre looked back at Camilla.

"She said the original envelope is in my office.""

"Then we need to secure it before anyone else gets there.""

Andre straightened.

"Valeria is still with the police?""

"Detective Harris says she's being questioned. He hasn't told me whether she's under arrest.""

"Then I'm going home.""

"Not alone, you're not.""

Andre looked toward the sofa, where Zoe had begun to stir.

"I need to get my daughter somewhere safe. I need to find that envelope. And I need to know why my wife was terrified of her own friend.""

Marcus was quiet for a moment.

"Let the police accompany you. If the envelope contains evidence, we don't want anyone accusing you of tampering with it.""

Andre agreed.

He kissed Zoe's forehead, arranged for a trusted family friend to stay with her at the hospital, and left after making sure the nurse knew how to reach him.

At the penthouse, two officers were waiting in the lobby.

Detective Harris met him near the elevators.

"We've secured the scene," Harris explained.

"You can enter with us, but don't touch anything until we've documented it.""

Andre nodded.

The elevator doors opened onto the foyer.

The marble floor had been cleaned, but the room no longer felt like home. The crystal chandelier seemed colder. The sunlight looked harsher. Even the silence felt different.

Andre walked toward his office.

The door stood slightly ajar.

He pushed it open.

Everything appeared normal at first. His desk was arranged neatly, his laptop sat on its stand, and a row of framed family photographs lined the bookshelf.

Then he noticed the locked cabinet.

Its door hung open.

Several folders had been removed.

"Detective," he called.

Harris came to stand beside him.

"Was this cabinet locked when you left yesterday?""

"Yes.""

"Who had access?""

Andre hesitated.

"My wife. Me. And Valeria, temporarily.""

Harris glanced at the open cabinet.

"Why did she have access?""

"She helped with our foundation's accounts.""

"Did she have a key?""

"She knew where the spare was kept.""

Andre felt ashamed saying it aloud.

He had given Valeria access to the very room where she might have altered the documents now threatening his family.

He searched the desk with his eyes, careful not to touch anything.

A framed photograph showed Camilla standing beside him at their wedding. Her natural curls fell around her shoulders, and she was laughing at something outside the frame.

He remembered that day.

Valeria had stood beside Camilla in an emerald dress, holding the bouquet while the photographer arranged the family.

They had all looked happy.

Andre turned away from the photograph.

"There's a safe behind the bookshelf," he said.

The officers moved aside as he approached the wall.

He pulled two books from the lower shelf, revealing a small digital safe built into the cabinetry.

The door was open.

Inside lay an empty velvet pouch, a passport, and a small stack of envelopes.

The blue envelope was missing.

Andre stared at the empty space.

"She took it.""

"Maybe," Harris replied.

"But we need to establish when it disappeared.""

Andre moved to the desk and examined the computer without touching it.

"Can your team check the security footage?""

"We've requested the building's recordings. The penthouse system also appears to have been disconnected shortly before the emergency call.""

Andre turned sharply.

"What?""

"The cameras stopped transmitting. We're investigating whether that was accidental or deliberate.""

He remembered the sudden silence in the foyer, the vial on the floor, and Valeria standing near the door.

Someone had known where the cameras were.

Someone had known how to disable them.

His phone rang.

Marcus.

"I found something," the attorney said.

"Camilla's records show a scheduled meeting with a forensic accountant tomorrow. She intended to bring the original trust documents.""

"Why didn't you tell me earlier?""

"Because I only just received the confirmation. Andre, the appointment was made under a confidential reference number. Camilla was trying to keep the investigation contained.""

"Who was the accountant?""

"Her name is Denise Carter. She's reviewing the transfers and signature records.""

Andre looked at Harris.

"Can you verify that?""

The detective nodded and gestured to an officer, who began making a note.

Marcus continued.

"There's something else. The trust amendment wasn't the only document submitted. Someone also filed paperwork to change the authorized contact for the foundation.""

"To Valeria?""

"Yes.""

Andre closed his eyes.

"Everything was prepared in advance.""

"It appears that way. But we still need the original documents.""

Andre looked around the office.

Then his gaze settled on a small scratch along the bookshelf.

He crouched.

The scratch was fresh, cutting through the dark wood just above the baseboard.

"Detective, look at this.""

Harris knelt beside him.

"Don't touch it.""

Andre pulled his hand back.

The officer examined the scratch and the surrounding panel.

"There's a gap here," Harris said.

He called the evidence technician, who photographed the area and carefully inspected the bookshelf.

A concealed panel had been fitted behind the lower shelf. It didn't appear on the original room plans Andre remembered approving.

The technician examined the mechanism.

"There's a compartment behind this section," he said.

"We'll need to document it before opening it.""

Andre stared at the panel.

He had owned the penthouse for five years.

He had never known it was there.

"Open it," Harris said.

The technician worked carefully along the panel's edge until a concealed latch released.

A narrow compartment appeared.

Inside lay a second blue envelope.

Andre's breath caught.

The technician photographed its position, then carefully removed it according to the evidence procedure.

"Do you recognize this?"" Harris asked.

Andre nodded.

"That's the envelope Camilla used for the trust documents.""

"Can you identify it without opening it?""

"Yes. She wrote our initials on the back in silver ink.""

The envelope was sealed.

The technician documented it before placing it in an evidence sleeve.

Andre stared at the silver letters.

A.M. and C.M.

His initials and his wife's.

For one moment, hope rose in his chest.

Then Harris noticed a folded note wedged behind the panel.

It was not inside the envelope.

The technician photographed the note and removed it separately.

Harris read the first line.

His expression changed.

"What is it?"" Andre demanded.

The detective didn't answer immediately.

He read the note again, then turned it so Andre could see the writing without disturbing the evidence.

It was Camilla's handwriting.

*If Andre finds this, Valeria has already made her move. Do not let him sign anything. The person behind her is closer to us than either of us realizes.*

Andre read the message twice.

"The person behind her?""

Harris folded his arms.

"Your wife appears to have believed Valeria wasn't acting alone.""

Andre looked toward the open doorway.

"Who else knew about the trust?""

"That's what we're going to determine.""

Andre's mind raced through the people who had access to their lives: their accountant, their attorney, the foundation's board members, the household staff, and the handful of friends who regularly visited the penthouse.

Then he remembered the one person who had helped him create the original family trust.

His older brother, Darius.

Darius had introduced Andre to the investment firm that managed the family's assets. He had attended every major business meeting. He knew where Andre kept his documents and which accounts held the largest balances.

He also knew the family trust contained a clause that transferred control under certain circumstances.

Andre had told him about that clause over dinner months earlier.

Harris noticed the change in his expression.

"Mr. Mitchell?""

Andre looked at the detective.

"My brother helped establish the trust.""

"Does he have access to your accounts?""

"He did. Until last year.""

"Why did you remove his access?""

Andre hesitated.

"Because Camilla found a transfer she couldn't explain. Darius said it was an accounting error, and I believed him. I removed his access, but I never filed a formal complaint.""

Harris studied him.

"Was Valeria involved in that transaction?""

Andre felt the room close around him.

"I don't know.""

His phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unfamiliar number.

*You found the wrong envelope. Ask Darius why Camilla changed the locks on the nursery.*

Andre stared at the screen.

The nursery.

Camilla had changed the locks three weeks earlier, telling him she wanted to keep the room private while she organized the baby's belongings.

He had thought nothing of it.

Now he remembered the argument he'd overheard between her and Darius the previous weekend.

Darius had asked why she was being secretive.

Camilla had answered, "Because I finally understand what you've been doing.""

Andre looked at Detective Harris.

"My brother needs to be questioned.""

Before Harris could respond, Andre's phone rang again.

This time, the caller ID displayed Darius Mitchell.

Andre answered on speaker.

"Andre," his brother said, sounding unusually calm.

"I've been trying to reach you. I heard Camilla was taken to the hospital.""

Andre said nothing.

"Is she awake?""

"No.""

A pause.

"That's terrible. Listen, I need you to do something for me. Don't open any documents you find in the office. They're not what you think they are.""

Andre's blood ran cold.

"How do you know we've found documents?""

Silence.

Then Darius spoke again.

"Because Valeria just called me.""

Andre stared at Harris.

His brother continued, his voice suddenly sharp.

"And if you've found the original envelope, you need to put it back exactly where it was.""

Andre's fingers tightened around the phone.

"Why?""

Darius exhaled.

May you like

"Because if you read what's inside, you'll discover why Camilla was never supposed to have that baby.""

The line went dead.
