Chapter 8: The Child My Brother Wanted

Andre didn't remember leaving the hospital room.

One moment, he was holding Camilla's hand. The next, he stood in the corridor staring at the floor while the words she had spoken repeated inside his head.

Darius is trying to prove that he's the baby's biological father.

It was an accusation so monstrous that his mind refused to accept it.

He called Marcus.

“Where are you?””

“Outside the hospital. I was coming to see you.””

“Meet me at the penthouse. Bring everything you have on the trust, the investigator, and the original family records.””

Marcus paused.

“What's happened?””

“I'll explain when you get here.””

Andre ended the call and went to find Zoe.

She was sitting with the family friend who had stayed with her, carefully arranging the stuffed rabbit and her colored pencils on a hospital chair.

“Daddy?””

Andre knelt beside her.

“We need to go home for a little while.””

“Is Mommy coming?””

“Not yet, sweetheart. The doctors are taking care of her.””

Zoe studied his face.

“Are you sad?””

He forced a small smile.

“A little.””

She wrapped her arms around his neck.

“It's okay, Daddy. Mommy says it's okay to cry when you're scared.””

Andre closed his eyes and held her tightly.

Then he stood, took her hand, and led her toward the elevator.

By the time they reached the penthouse, Marcus had arrived with a briefcase and two folders.

Detective Harris had also returned, accompanied by an officer who was documenting the condition of the nursery.

Andre led them down the hallway.

The nursery door was locked.

He took out his key, but it wouldn't turn.

"Camilla changed the lock," he said.

The officer examined the door.

"We'll document the lock before opening it.""

Andre stepped back.

Zoe stood beside him, clutching her rabbit.

"Why is Mommy's room locked?""

"It's the baby's room, sweetheart.""

"But Mommy said I could help paint the stars.""

Andre knelt beside her.

"Would you like to wait with Marcus while we check something?""

Zoe shook her head.

"I want to see the stars.""

He looked at Marcus, who nodded and took Zoe's hand.

"We'll stay right outside," Marcus promised her.

The officer arranged for the lock to be opened without damaging the door. When it finally swung inward, Andre stepped into the nursery.

The room smelled of fresh paint and clean cotton.

A white crib stood beneath a mobile of tiny silver stars. Lavender curtains framed the windows. A rocking chair sat beside a small bookshelf filled with children's stories.

Everything looked peaceful.

Almost painfully so.

Andre remembered assembling the crib with Camilla one Saturday afternoon. She had laughed when he put one of the support bars on backward. He had complained that the instructions were written by someone who hated fathers.

They had spent hours imagining the baby's future.

Now Andre searched the room for a hidden compartment.

"The letter was behind the wall," he said.

"Which wall?"" Harris asked.

Camilla had described a metal box near the closet, concealed behind a removable panel.

Andre walked toward the far corner.

The officer examined the wall and found a narrow seam beneath the shelf.

After photographing the area, he carefully removed the panel.

Behind it sat a small metal box.

Andre stared at it.

"That's it.""

The officer put on gloves and removed the box, documenting its position before opening it.

Inside lay several folded papers, an old photograph, and a sealed envelope bearing Andre's father's handwriting.

Marcus leaned closer.

"That's your father's signature.""

Andre picked up the photograph only after the officer had documented the contents and confirmed that he could examine it without compromising the evidence.

It showed two newborn babies lying in separate hospital bassinets.

On the back, someone had written two dates and two names.

*Andre Mitchell.*

*Daniel Brooks.*

Andre stared at the second name.

"Who is Daniel Brooks?""

Marcus opened the first folder he had brought.

"I found a reference to that name in an old trust file. I thought it was a former employee, but the record was incomplete.""

Harris turned toward him.

"What kind of reference?""

"A beneficiary inquiry from nearly thirty years ago. It was closed without explanation.""

Andre examined the photograph again.

The babies looked almost identical.

He turned it over.

Below the names, in faded ink, was another line.

*Twin boys. Separate records. One truth.*

Andre's chest tightened.

"Twins?""

Marcus looked at him.

"Your father never mentioned a twin.""

"No.""

Andre opened the envelope, following the officer's instructions while the documents were being documented.

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was unmistakably his father's.

Andre read the first paragraph aloud.

To my sons, if either of you ever discovers this letter, understand that I kept a secret because I believed the truth would destroy more than it could save.

He paused.

Zoe had returned to the doorway with Marcus. She watched her father silently.

Andre continued.

When your mother gave birth, two boys were delivered within minutes of each other. One belonged to our family. The other belonged to a woman whose circumstances made her vulnerable to people who wanted to control her child.

Andre's hands began to tremble.

The hospital records were altered. One baby was sent home under the wrong name. I discovered the error years later, after a nurse contacted me with information she could no longer keep secret.

Marcus leaned over the letter.

Andre swallowed.

I searched for the truth, but the people involved had powerful connections. I was warned to stop. I was told that if I continued, both children would be placed in danger.

Andre looked at the photograph.

Two babies.

Two names.

A family secret hidden for decades.

The letter continued.

I could not undo what had happened. I could only protect the children until I understood the consequences. I arranged the trust so that neither boy could use his position to control the other. If the truth ever emerges, the original records must be examined by an independent authority.

Andre's eyes moved to the final paragraph.

One of my sons may be living under a name that does not belong to him. If he discovers his identity before the records are secured, he may believe that everything he has ever known was stolen from him.

The letter ended with a single sentence.

Do not let the person who was wronged become the person who does the wrong.

Andre lowered the page.

The room was silent.

Harris looked toward Marcus.

"We need to verify every detail in this letter. The photograph and the alleged hospital records could be significant, but we can't treat the contents as established fact.""

Marcus nodded.

"I'll contact the hospital's legal department and request the original birth records through the proper channels.""

Andre looked at the photograph again.

"Daniel Brooks," he whispered.

Zoe tugged at his sleeve.

"Daddy, who's that baby?""

Andre crouched beside her.

"I don't know yet, sweetheart.""

"Is it our baby?""

"No.""

She looked at the photograph.

"Then why is it in the baby's room?""

Andre had no answer.

His phone rang.

Detective Harris checked the screen and frowned.

"It's the station.""

He answered.

"Go ahead.""

Andre watched the detective's expression change as he listened.

"What do you mean, released?""

A pause.

"On whose authority?""

Another pause.

Harris looked directly at Andre.

"All right. Send the paperwork to my office.""

He ended the call.

"What happened?"" Andre demanded.

"Darius has been released pending further investigation.""

Andre stared at him.

"He's allowed to walk out after everything we've found?""

"He hasn't been charged with a crime at this stage. We don't have enough evidence to detain him.""

"What about the forged documents?""

"We're investigating them. The financial transactions, the laboratory report, and the vial are all being examined.""

Andre turned away, furious.

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

*You found the letter. Good. Now ask Marcus who Daniel Brooks really is.*

Andre slowly turned toward his attorney.

Marcus had gone pale.

Andre noticed.

"Do you know that name?""

Marcus looked at the message.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then he closed his briefcase.

"I need to tell you something about your father.""

Andre stepped closer.

"What?""

Marcus glanced at the officers, then at Zoe.

"Not in front of the child.""

Andre's voice hardened.

"Whatever you know, you're going to tell me now.""

Marcus looked toward the photograph.

"Daniel Brooks wasn't just another baby born at the same hospital.""

He swallowed.

"He was the biological son of a woman your father loved before he married your mother.""

Andre felt as though the floor had dropped away beneath him.

"What are you saying?""

Marcus lowered his voice.

"Your father may have known that one of the babies was his biological child and that the other belonged to a different man. The hospital records were altered to conceal which was which.""

Andre stared at the photograph.

One baby had grown up as Andre Mitchell.

The other might have grown up as Darius Mitchell.

Or neither name might be what it appeared to be.

Marcus continued.

"If the records are authentic, your father's entire estate may have been structured around a false assumption about the children's identities.""

Andre shook his head.

"And Darius knew?""

"I don't know.""

"Then why is he trying to claim my unborn child is his?""

Marcus hesitated.

"Because if Darius believes he's the rightful heir to your father's estate, he may think the baby threatens his claim.""

Andre looked down at the old letter.

A cold realization settled over him.

Darius might have spent years believing he was the rightful heir.

He might have forged documents because he believed the family fortune had been stolen from him.

But none of that explained why Camilla had been poisoned.

None of it explained the fake DNA report.

And none of it explained the unknown number that seemed to know every step they took.

Andre turned toward Detective Harris.

"Find Darius.""

"We'll contact him.""

"No. Find him before someone else does.""

Harris frowned.

"Why?""

Andre held up the phone.

"Because whoever keeps sending these messages knows what we're finding before we find it.""

The detective read the screen.

Then his own phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed almost immediately.

"Where?""

He listened, then looked at Andre.

"Mr. Mitchell, we have a problem.""

"What now?""

"Valeria has disappeared from the location where she was being interviewed.""

Andre felt his blood turn to ice.

"She escaped?""

"We're confirming what happened. She was released earlier after the initial interview, but officers were supposed to maintain contact while we completed the next stage of questioning.""

Andre stared at the open nursery door.

Then he remembered the message.

You found the letter. Good.

Someone had been watching them.

May you like

Someone knew they had discovered the photograph.

And now Valeria was gone.
