Chapter 9: The Woman at the Door

The first knock came at 11:42 p.m.

Andre was in the penthouse kitchen, staring at the photograph of the two newborn boys, when the sound echoed through the quiet apartment.

He looked toward the foyer.

A second knock followed.

Then three rapid strikes.

Marcus stood near the dining table with his phone pressed to his ear. Detective Harris had left twenty minutes earlier to coordinate the search for Valeria and locate Darius.

Zoe was asleep in the guest bedroom, exhausted from a day of confusion and fear.

Andre approached the security monitor.

The screen showed a woman standing outside the double doors.

Straight dark hair.

Emerald dress.

Beige handbag.

Valeria.

Andre stepped back.

Marcus ended his call.

"What is it?""

Andre pointed at the monitor.

Marcus's face drained of color.

"Don't open that door.""

Valeria knocked again.

"André, please!""

Her voice sounded raw, almost desperate.

"I need to talk to you.""

Andre activated the intercom.

"You need to talk to the police.""

"I know. I know what it looks like.""

"Then explain why you disappeared.""

Valeria looked toward the camera.

"Because someone is trying to kill me.""

Andre stared at her.

"You expect me to believe that?""

"No. I expect you to listen.""

She raised her hands, showing him her empty palms.

"I don't have a weapon. I don't have the vial. I don't have anything except the truth.""

Marcus stepped beside Andre.

"Tell her to leave.""

Andre ignored him.

"Why did you say Camilla wasn't supposed to find out?""

Valeria's face crumpled.

"Because I was afraid she would tell you what Darius had done.""

"What did he do?""

She swallowed.

"He told me the baby was the key to everything. He said if Camilla delivered the child, the original trust provisions would become enforceable. He said the estate would pass to the rightful heir.""

Andre gripped the edge of the console.

"And you believed him?""

"I believed that he'd found something in your father's records. I didn't know how far he was willing to go.""

"Did you put anything in that vial?""

Valeria closed her eyes.

"Yes.""

Andre went completely still.

Marcus whispered, "Andre, don't.""

Andre leaned toward the intercom.

"What was in it?""

"I don't know the exact substance. Darius gave it to me in a sealed container. He told me it was a sedative and that Camilla would only be unconscious for a short time.""

Andre's voice rose.

"You gave my pregnant wife an unknown substance?""

"I didn't know she was going to collapse like that!""

"She could have died!""

Valeria began crying.

"I know.""

"No, you don't know. You weren't the one kneeling on the floor begging her to wake up. You weren't the one holding your daughter while she asked whether her mother was dead.""

Valeria pressed a hand over her mouth.

"I know what I did.""

Andre stared at her.

"Why?""

"Because Darius said Camilla had the original letter and that she was going to give it to the police. He said if she did, all of us would lose everything.""

"All of us?""

Valeria looked away.

Andre felt his stomach tighten.

"What does that mean?""

She lowered her voice.

"He promised me a share of the trust. He said I would never have to worry about money again. He said we could leave the country when it was over.""

Marcus moved closer to Andre.

"Keep her talking. Harris needs to hear this.""

Andre pressed the intercom button again.

"Who gave you the vial?""

"Darius.""

"Where is he now?""

"I don't know.""

"You're lying.""

"I'm not!"" Valeria cried.

"He told me to meet him at the penthouse after you left for the hospital. He said he would take the envelope and get rid of the remaining documents. But when I arrived, he wasn't there.""

Andre stared at her.

"You went back to the apartment?""

"Yes.""

"When?""

"About an hour after you left.""

Marcus looked sharply at Andre.

"That means she may have been inside while we were at the hospital.""

Andre remembered the hidden compartment.

The letter.

The photograph.

The original records.

He turned toward Valeria.

"What did you take?""

"Nothing.""

"What did you do in my office?""

She shook her head.

"I searched for the envelope. It wasn't where Darius said it would be.""

Andre's mind raced.

"Did you know about the hidden compartment?""

"No.""

"Did you know about the letter?""

Valeria hesitated.

"Not until Camilla told me.""

Andre's voice dropped.

"When?""

"Three weeks ago.""

He stared at her.

"Three weeks?""

Valeria nodded.

"She found the letter while she was preparing the nursery. She called me because she was frightened and didn't know whether she should tell you. She thought your father might have been involved in something terrible.""

Andre felt sick.

"And instead of helping her, you told Darius.""

Valeria began crying harder.

"He already knew. He said he'd been searching for the letter for years.""

Andre looked toward Marcus.

The attorney had gone pale again.

Andre noticed.

"Why do you keep looking like that?""

Marcus didn't answer.

Andre turned back to Valeria.

"What else did Darius tell you?""

She wiped her face.

"He said the baby wasn't yours. He said he had proof. He told me the child was the biological heir to a different branch of the family and that if the baby was born, everything would change.""

Andre stared at her.

"Did he tell you whose child it was?""

Valeria nodded.

"Yes.""

"Whose?""

She looked directly into the camera.

"His.""

Andre felt a rush of anger.

"You're telling me Darius claimed to be the father of my unborn child?""

"No. Not in the way you think.""

Valeria took a shaky breath.

"He said the baby was connected to his biological family. He said your father had hidden the truth about the switched babies, and that the child would inherit rights that belonged to him.""

Andre's voice became cold.

"That makes no sense.""

"I know. But he had documents. He showed me the DNA report and the original hospital records. He said the report proved that he was related to the baby in a way you weren't.""

Marcus suddenly stepped away from the console.

Andre noticed.

"Marcus.""

The attorney looked at him.

"What?""

"Why does that sound familiar to you?""

Marcus pressed his lips together.

Valeria leaned toward the camera.

"Because Marcus knew about the original records.""

Andre turned slowly.

"Is that true?""

Marcus looked at the front door.

Then back at Andre.

"I knew your father had a sealed file concerning the family trust. I didn't know what it contained.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because your father instructed me to keep it confidential unless the original documents were found.""

Andre stared at him.

"You've known about this for years?""

"I knew there was a sealed file. Nothing more.""

Valeria shook her head.

"That's not true.""

Marcus's expression hardened.

"Be careful what you say.""

Valeria stepped closer to the camera.

"You told Darius where the original records were stored.""

Marcus went silent.

Andre felt the room become unbearably small.

He turned toward his attorney.

"Did you?""

Marcus rubbed his forehead.

"I gave Darius access to a storage facility several years ago. Your father had instructed me to retrieve some archived company records. I didn't know he would search for the hospital documents.""

Andre took a step backward.

"You gave him access to the records?""

"I didn't know what he was looking for!""

Valeria's voice trembled through the intercom.

"He's lying. Darius said Marcus helped him prepare the trust amendment.""

Andre looked at Marcus.

"Did you help him forge my signature?""

"No.""

"Did you know about the vial?""

"Absolutely not.""

"Did you know Camilla was in danger?""

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

That hesitation was enough to make Andre's heart pound.

"Marcus?""

The attorney looked toward the guest bedroom.

"Your father left instructions that if the original letter ever surfaced, the family trust had to be frozen immediately. I was trying to prevent the documents from being released before we understood their implications.""

Andre stared at him.

"By keeping me in the dark?""

"By protecting the estate from a legal crisis.""

"My wife is unconscious in a hospital bed. My daughter thinks her mother is dying. And you were worried about a legal crisis?""

Marcus lowered his eyes.

"I'm sorry.""

Andre turned away.

He didn't know whom to trust anymore.

His brother had apparently manipulated the trust. Valeria had admitted giving Camilla an unknown substance. Marcus had concealed information about the original records.

And someone was still sending messages from an unknown number.

Andre reached for his phone.

"I'm calling Harris.""

Before he could dial, the lights flickered.

The security monitor went black.

A heavy thud sounded from the hallway outside the penthouse.

Marcus stepped back.

"What was that?""

Andre moved toward the door, then stopped.

He remembered the camera outage before Camilla collapsed.

He remembered the vial on the floor.

He remembered the hidden compartment and the message warning him not to trust the people closest to him.

"Stay back," he told Marcus.

Another thud sounded.

Then a voice came through the intercom, though the screen remained dark.

"Andre.""

It was Darius.

Andre's blood ran cold.

"Open the door.""

Andre didn't move.

Darius's voice came again, calm and measured.

"I know you've found the letter. I know you've seen the photograph. And I know Marcus has told you only half the truth.""

Andre looked at Marcus.

The attorney was shaking his head.

"Don't listen to him," Marcus whispered.

Darius laughed softly through the intercom.

"Ask Marcus who signed your father's final medical authorization. Ask him why your father changed his will two days before he died.""

Andre stared at the black screen.

"What do you want?""

"I want the original hospital records.""

"You can explain everything to the police.""

"The police don't understand what those records mean.""

"Then explain it to me.""

Darius fell silent.

When he spoke again, his voice had changed.

"Because the man who raised you wasn't your biological father, Andre.""

Andre felt the words strike like a physical blow.

Behind him, Marcus whispered, "No.""

Darius continued.

"Your father knew the truth. He spent years protecting it. And when he died, he left the secret to you because he believed you would never have the courage to uncover it.""

Andre stared at the door.

"You're lying.""

"Then open the envelope.""

Andre looked toward the table.

The photograph of the two newborn boys lay beside his father's letter.

Two names.

Two identities.

A truth hidden for decades.

Darius's voice dropped to a whisper.

"Open it, Andre. Then you'll understand why Camilla was never supposed to find out who you really are.""

A sharp crash sounded against the front door.

Zoe screamed from the guest bedroom.

Andre spun toward the sound, instinctively moving to protect his daughter.

Marcus rushed toward the hallway.

And when Andre looked back at the security monitor, the screen flickered to life for one brief second.

Darius was standing outside the door.

Beside him was a woman Andre had never seen before.

She held a document against the camera.

At the bottom of the page was a signature that Andre recognized immediately.

His father's.

Above it, in bold black letters, were the words:

*CERTIFICATE OF BIOLOGICAL PARENTAGE.*

And the name listed as the biological father of Andre Mitchell was not the name of the man who had raised him.

May you like

It was the name of the man who had been sending the anonymous messages all along.

*Daniel Brooks.*
