Chapter 7: The Report That Could Destroy Us
Darius Mitchell stood outside Camilla’s hospital room holding a white envelope as though it contained the answer to a question he had spent years trying to avoid.
His navy blazer was immaculate. His shoes shone beneath the fluorescent lights. He had even brought a bouquet of white lilies, the kind Camilla used to arrange in the penthouse every Sunday morning.
Andre looked at the flowers, then at his brother.
“Put those down.””
Darius glanced at the bouquet.
“I brought them for Camilla.””
“She can't receive visitors right now.””
“I heard she's awake.””
Andre stepped into the corridor and pulled the door nearly shut behind him.
“Who told you that?””
Darius hesitated.
“Valeria.””
Of course.
Andre felt something inside him harden.
“You're going to explain why your name appears on a payment for a private investigator who was hired to question the paternity of my unborn child.””
Darius's expression barely changed.
“Not here.””
“That's what Valeria said. That's what you said. Everybody seems to have a reason why the truth can't be spoken in front of witnesses.””
“I'm trying to protect you.””
Andre laughed once, without humor.
“From what? My own wife?””
Darius looked toward the closed hospital door.
“From the consequences of believing something simply because you want it to be true.””
Andre took a step closer.
“Don't you dare talk about my wife like that.””
For the first time, Darius's composure slipped.
“You don't know what she's been doing.””
“Then tell me.””
Darius held up the envelope.
“Read this first.””
Andre didn't take it.
“Give it to Detective Harris.””
“It's a private laboratory report.””
“Then the police can verify it.””
Darius lowered his voice.
“Camilla told you, didn't she? She told you what I found.””
Andre stared at him.
“You mean what you paid someone to manufacture?””
Darius's jaw tightened.
“You have no idea what you're talking about.””
“Then prove me wrong.””
Darius glanced at the envelope.
“The report says the probability that you're the biological father is less than one percent.””
For a moment, the corridor seemed to go silent.
Andre stared at his brother.
He had imagined a dozen explanations for the forged trust amendment, the missing envelope, and the suspected poisoning.
He had not imagined hearing those words spoken aloud.
“That's impossible.””
“Is it?””
“Yes.””
Darius shook his head.
“You've been away on business for months at a time. Camilla has been alone. People make mistakes.””
Andre grabbed his brother's lapel.
“Take that back.””
Darius didn't fight him. He simply looked down at Andre's fist.
“Go ahead,” he said quietly.
“Hit me. That's easier than opening the envelope.””
Andre released him.
A nurse appeared at the end of the corridor, watching them cautiously.
Darius straightened his blazer.
“You want to believe Camilla. I understand. But I spent money finding the truth because somebody had to.””
“You spent my money.””
“Our money,” Darius corrected.
“The family trust. The company. Everything Dad built.””
Andre looked at him with disgust.
“You stole from the trust.””
“I moved funds to protect them.””
“You forged my signature.””
“I made decisions you were too distracted to make.””
Andre stared at his brother, struggling to reconcile the man before him with the boy who had once promised to look after him.
“You've lost your mind.””
Darius's expression hardened.
“Then ask Camilla why she refused to let me see the original report.””
“Because you lied to her.””
“Ask her why she changed the nursery locks.””
Andre went still.
Darius noticed.
“Ah. She didn't tell you that part, did she?””
Andre's voice dropped.
“What does the nursery have to do with any of this?””
“Everything.””
Darius looked toward the hospital room again.
“Dad left something for the next generation. Something Camilla discovered when she started reviewing the trust documents. She thought she could keep it from me.””
“What did he leave?””
Darius smiled faintly, but there was no warmth in it.
“Ask your wife what she found behind the nursery wall.””
Andre felt a chill run down his spine.
Before he could respond, Detective Harris emerged from the elevator with another officer.
“Darius Mitchell?””
Darius turned.
“Yes.””
“We need you to accompany us to the station for questioning.””
Darius sighed as though the request were an inconvenience.
“Of course. But before I go, Andre needs to understand something.””
Harris stepped between them.
“You can make any statement you wish through the appropriate channels.””
Darius ignored him.
“Your wife didn't just discover a problem with the trust,” he told Andre.
“She discovered why Dad changed it in the first place.””
Andre's hands curled into fists.
“Tell me what you're talking about.””
Darius looked at him for a long moment.
Then he leaned close enough that only Andre could hear his next words.
“The baby isn't the reason Camilla is in danger. The baby is the reason she was allowed to live this long.””
Andre recoiled.
“What did you say?””
Darius stepped back.
The detective took his arm.
“Let's go.””
As the officers escorted him away, Darius turned once more.
“Check the nursery,” he called.
“And when you find what's behind the wall, remember that I tried to warn you.””
The elevator doors closed.
Andre stood motionless in the corridor.
Then he hurried back into Camilla's room.
She was awake, her face pale against the pillow. The moment she saw him, she reached for his hand.
“Did he give you the report?”” she whispered.
“He tried.””
“Did you read it?””
“No.””
She closed her eyes in relief.
Andre sat beside her.
“Camilla, what did you find in the nursery?””
Her expression changed.
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she whispered, “Your father's letter.””
Andre stared at her.
“My father died twelve years ago.””
“I know.””
“What letter?””
Camilla swallowed.
“The one he wrote before he died. It was hidden behind the nursery wall, inside a metal box. I found it when we were preparing the room for the baby.””
Andre felt the room tilt around him.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Darius came to the penthouse the next day. He said he knew I'd found it. He demanded that I hand it over.””
“What was in it?””
Camilla's eyes filled with tears.
“A warning.””
“About Darius?””
She nodded.
Andre leaned closer.
“What did your father warn you about?””
Camilla looked toward the door, then back at her husband.
“He said that if either of his sons ever tried to change the family trust without the other's knowledge, we should look for the original adoption papers.””
Andre frowned.
“Adoption papers?””
“Your father wrote that one of his sons had been given a different identity at birth. He said the truth had been hidden to protect the family.””
Andre stared at her.
“What does that have to do with our baby?””
Camilla's voice broke.
“Because Darius isn't your biological brother.””
Andre sat perfectly still.
Outside the window, the afternoon sun illuminated the hospital courtyard.
Inside the room, the monitor continued its steady rhythm.
Andre looked at Camilla, searching her face for any sign that she was confused or mistaken.
“You're telling me my brother was adopted?””
“Not exactly.””
She gripped his hand.
“Your father said Darius was switched with another child at birth. He said the original records were altered. He believed someone in the hospital had been paid to conceal the truth.””
Andre shook his head.
“That makes no sense.””
“I know.””
“Why would my father keep something like that secret?””
“Because he didn't know who he could trust.””
Andre looked toward the window.
His father had been a private man. He had built a successful construction business from nothing, worked long hours, and avoided discussing the past. Andre had always assumed that the silence surrounding his early years came from grief and exhaustion.
Now every family memory seemed to contain a question he had never thought to ask.
Camilla squeezed his hand.
“The letter said the truth would matter when the next generation inherited the trust.””
Andre turned back.
“What else did it say?””
She began crying.
“It said that if the wrong person gained control of the original records, the entire family could lose everything.””
Andre leaned forward.
“Where is the letter now?””
Camilla looked at him with frightened eyes.
“I hid it in the nursery.””
He stood immediately.
“Then I'm going home.””
“Andre, wait.””
He turned.
Camilla's fingers tightened around his wrist.
“There's something else.””
“What?””
She took a trembling breath.
“The DNA report Darius showed me wasn't about you and the baby.””
Andre stared at her.
“What do you mean?””
“It was a comparison between Darius and the baby.””
Andre felt his blood run cold.
May you like
Camilla whispered the words he would remember for the rest of his life.
“Darius is trying to prove that he's the baby's biological father.””
