Chapter 5: The Secret My Mother Left Behind

Three weeks after I escaped the wall, I returned home.

But it didn’t feel like home anymore.

The storage room was gone.

The wall had been repaired.

Fresh paint covered the place where I had been trapped.

But every time I walked past it, I remembered.

The darkness.

The silence.

Rebecca’s voice.

Dad noticed.

He stopped me one evening.

“Lily?””

I looked up.

“Yeah?””

“You don’t have to be brave all the time.””

I looked away.

“I’m okay.””

He smiled sadly.

“You always say that.””

Because that was what my mother taught me.

Be strong.

Be kind.

Don’t let cruel people change who you are.

But sometimes I wondered if being kind was what got me hurt.

A few days later, Detective Harris came back.

This time, he wasn’t alone.

He carried a small box.

“Your mother’s belongings,” he said.

I looked at Dad.

“I thought we already had everything.””

He shook his head.

“Your mother’s attorney kept this hidden until the right time.””

I opened the box.

Inside was a letter.

My name was written on the front.

My hands trembled.

I opened it.

Dear Lily,

If you are reading this, then something happened that made you need this letter.

I stopped.

Dad looked away.

Detective Harris stayed silent.

I continued.

Your father loves you more than anything. But people who want power will try to separate the people who love each other.

My eyes moved faster.

I created a trust for you, not because I wanted you to have money, but because I wanted you to always have a safe future.

I looked at Dad.

The room felt heavier.

Then I reached the final paragraph.

If someone tries to take this from you, remember this: the truth always survives. Sometimes it hides in places nobody thinks to look.

I froze.

“Places nobody thinks to look.””

Detective Harris noticed.

“What is it?””

I looked at the recorder sitting on the table.

The recorder that saved me.

Then I remembered something.

Before Rebecca sealed the wall…

She searched my pockets.

But she missed something.

Something hidden inside the device.

A second file.

I grabbed it.

“Wait.””

Dad looked confused.

“What?””

“I recorded more than I thought.””

We played the audio.

At first, there was only Rebecca’s voice.

Then another.

Uncle Michael.

But this time…

There was something different.

Rebecca wasn’t asking for help.

She was giving instructions.

“Once Lily disappears, John will be desperate.””

Michael laughed.

“And then?””

“Then you convince him to sell everything.””

My blood ran cold.

But then came the sentence that changed everything.

Rebecca said:

“And after the trust money transfers, we leave.””

Dad stared at the recorder.

Detective Harris grabbed the file.

“This proves they planned everything.””

But there was more.

A sound in the background.

A door opening.

Someone else entering the room.

A voice nobody recognized.

A woman’s voice.

Rebecca immediately became quiet.

Then she said:

“I thought you were gone.””

The unknown woman replied:

“You should have been more careful.””

The recording ended.

Everyone stared at each other.

Detective Harris looked concerned.

“Who is that?””

Dad shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A woman spoke.

“John?””

Dad stood.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“You don’t know me yet…”

My heart started pounding.

“But I know everything Rebecca did.””

Dad looked at me.

The woman continued:

“And I know where she hid the real evidence.””

The call disconnected.

Detective Harris immediately stood.

Because he understood what I did.

Rebecca had a partner.

Someone even more dangerous.

May you like

And she had been waiting in the shadows…

Since the night I disappeared.
