Chapter 9: The Truth About My Mother
The person standing in the doorway wasn’t my mother.
For one second, my heart believed it.
A foolish, impossible hope.
But then I saw her face.
Older.
Different.
And somehow familiar.
Clara whispered her name.
“Victoria.””
Dad stepped back.
“No.””
The woman smiled sadly.
“Hello, John.””
Nobody moved.
Detective Harris immediately reached for his radio.
The woman raised her hands.
“I’m not here to run.””
Dad stared at her.
“Who are you?””
She looked at me.
“My name is Victoria Hayes.””
Clara’s face turned white.
“Your sister?””
Victoria nodded.
And suddenly everything made sense.
Clara wasn’t the only one who knew the truth.
She had a sister.
A sister who had been hidden from everyone.
Dad looked confused.
“Why would you fake your death?””
Victoria sighed.
“Because Rebecca wasn’t the only danger.””
She looked at the folder.
“Your wife discovered something bigger.””
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“Explain.””
Victoria looked at me.
“Your mother found out that Rebecca was being controlled by someone else.””
“Who?””
Victoria’s eyes moved toward Dad.
“You.””
Everyone froze.
“What?”” Dad said.
Victoria shook her head.
“Not because you were involved.””
“Then what?””
“Because the person behind everything wanted access to you.””
I felt confused.
“Why?””
Victoria looked at me.
“Because your father was the only person your mother trusted.””
She explained everything.
Years ago, Rebecca was hired by a powerful business group connected to my mother’s company.
Her job was simple.
Get close to the family.
Find the trust.
Control the money.
But my mother discovered the plan.
She started collecting evidence.
That was why she recorded the video.
That was why she hid documents.
That was why she created the emergency account.
“She knew someone would try to take everything from you,” Victoria said.
Dad looked broken.
“And Rebecca?””
“She panicked.””
Rebecca looked away.
For the first time, she looked ashamed.
“She was supposed to scare Lily into giving up information.””
My stomach turned.
“She locked me in a wall.””
Victoria nodded.
“She went too far.””
Dad looked at Rebecca.
“You almost killed my daughter.””
Rebecca didn’t answer.
Because there was nothing she could say.
Then Detective Harris asked the question everyone wanted answered.
“Who was controlling Rebecca?””
Victoria handed him another document.
A name.
A signature.
The room went silent.
Because the person behind everything was someone connected to my mother.
Someone who had attended her funeral.
Someone who had comforted my father.
Someone who had been there while everyone mourned.
The mastermind was my mother’s former business partner.
A man named Richard Vale.
Dad whispered:
“He was my friend.””
Victoria nodded.
“He wasn’t.””
Everything finally connected.
The money.
The lies.
The accident.
The wall.
All of it.
But there was one final piece missing.
My mother’s death.
Detective Harris looked at Victoria.
“You said Rebecca wasn’t responsible.””
Victoria looked down.
“No.””
“Then who was?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Victoria answered.
“Richard.””
Dad closed his eyes.
The truth he feared most had arrived.
The person he trusted had destroyed the person he loved.
Days later, Richard was arrested.
The evidence was overwhelming.
But before he was taken away, he sent one final message.
To me.
A letter.
Only one sentence.
Your mother was protecting you from something worse than me.
I read it again and again.
Because it meant one thing.

Richard wasn’t the end.
He was only the beginning.
