Chapter 7: The Room Beneath The House

The basement door had always been locked.

That was something I remembered.

When I was younger, I once asked Dad why.

He told me it was just an old storage room.

Nothing important.

But now, standing in front of it with Detective Harris beside him, Dad looked like he already knew.

There was something behind that door.

Something he had forgotten.

Or something someone wanted him to forget.

The locksmith arrived just after sunrise.

I stood behind Dad as the lock broke.

The door opened slowly.

Dust filled the air.

The basement smelled like old wood and forgotten memories.

Dad stepped inside first.

The flashlight moved across boxes.

Old furniture.

Family belongings.

Then Detective Harris stopped.

“Wait.””

He pointed toward the far wall.

There was a section of bricks that looked newer.

Recently repaired.

Dad walked closer.

His face changed.

“Rebecca.””

“What?”” I asked.

He touched the wall.

“She renovated this basement last year.””

Detective Harris looked at him.

“Did she give you a reason?””

“She said there was water damage.””

The detective stared at the wall.

“Apparently, there was something else.””

The workers opened it.

Behind the bricks was a hidden compartment.

Inside was a metal box.

Dad looked terrified.

“My wife knew.””

Nobody spoke.

The box contained everything.

Bank records.

Photographs.

Letters.

And a small video camera.

Detective Harris picked it up.

“This might be the evidence your mother left.””

We took everything upstairs.

The video camera still worked.

Barely.

Dad pressed play.

The screen flickered.

Then my mother appeared.

I froze.

I had not seen her move in years.

Her voice filled the room.

“John, if you’re watching this, something happened.””

Dad covered his mouth.

My mother looked tired.

Scared.

But determined.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

The video shook slightly.

“I discovered Rebecca has been manipulating people around us.””

Dad closed his eyes.

“She has been stealing company money.””

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“And I believe she may try to hurt me.””

I grabbed Dad’s hand.

He was shaking.

The video continued.

“I don’t know who I can trust anymore.””

A pause.

Then my mother whispered:

“But there is one person who knows the truth.””

The video cut.

Static filled the screen.

“That’s it?”” Dad asked.

Detective Harris checked the device.

“Battery died.””

Dad looked devastated.

“But she knew.””

“Yes,” Detective Harris said.

“She was trying to leave a warning.””

I looked at the camera.

“She said someone knew the truth.””

Clara, who had followed us to the house, suddenly became pale.

Everyone noticed.

Dad turned.

“Clara?””

She looked away.

“Clara, what?””

She sat down.

“I never wanted you to know this.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

She took a shaky breath.

“I was there the night your mother died.””

Dad froze.

“What?””

“I followed Rebecca.””

Nobody moved.

Clara’s eyes filled with tears.

“Your mother called me that night. She told me she found something.””

“What did she find?”” Dad asked.

“Proof.””

“Of what?””

Clara looked at him.

“That Rebecca planned everything.””

The room became silent.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”” Dad whispered.

Clara looked destroyed.

“Because Rebecca threatened my son.””

Dad stared.

“She said if I spoke, she would ruin his life.””

Detective Harris stepped forward.

“Where is your son now?””

Clara looked down.

“He disappeared five years ago.””

Everyone went quiet.

Rebecca had been destroying lives long before she locked me away.

She had been building a web.

And everyone caught inside it had one thing in common.

They knew too much.

Then Detective Harris’s phone rang.

He answered.

A few seconds later, his expression changed.

“What happened?”” Dad asked.

The detective looked at us.

“Rebecca escaped custody.””

My blood turned cold.

“How?””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Someone helped her.””

Dad stood.

“Who?””

Detective Harris looked at the camera recording.

“The same person who was missing from your mother’s video.””

I felt a chill.

Because suddenly we understood.

Rebecca wasn’t the person controlling the game.

She was only one piece.

May you like

And the person behind everything…

Had just set her free.
