Chapter 3: The CEO Walked In
The first thing I noticed was the silence.
Not complete silence.
The airport was still alive beyond the glass walls.
Suitcases rolled across the floor. Boarding announcements echoed through the terminal. Coffee machines hissed behind the bar.
But inside the premium lounge, nobody seemed interested in anything except the entrance.
Marcus Reed walked in first.
He wore a charcoal suit, a white shirt, and no tie.
Behind him came my father.
Richard Brooks.
He was sixty-two years old, with silver at his temples and the kind of calm expression that made people nervous even when he wasn't angry.
Two airport security supervisors followed them.
Patricia's face lost its color.
Mark straightened his uniform.
And the passengers who had been laughing a few minutes earlier suddenly became very interested in their phones.
My father saw me.
Then he saw my cheek.
Then he looked at the baby in my arms.
His expression changed.
"Danielle.""
I tried to smile.
"Dad.""
He crossed the room in three quick steps.
He touched my cheek gently.
"Sweetheart, what happened?""
I looked down.
"She slapped me.""
My father closed his eyes for a brief moment.
When he opened them, he looked toward Patricia.
"Which one?""
Nobody answered.
Marcus Reed stepped forward.
"Mr. Brooks, let me handle this.""
My father didn't move.
"Marcus, I appreciate that. But first, I want to know why my daughter is standing here with a swollen face and a newborn in her arms.""
Marcus turned toward Patricia.
"Ms. Coleman?""
Patricia tried to smile.
"Mr. Reed. This is an unfortunate misunderstanding.""
Marcus didn't return the smile.
"Explain it.""
She adjusted her pink jacket.
"We had a passenger who refused to follow lounge procedures. I was attempting to escort her out when she became confrontational.""
My father looked at me.
"Is that true?""
"No.""
"Did you refuse a valid instruction?""
"I asked her to explain why my first-class boarding pass wasn't enough. Then I asked where the nursing room was.""
My father nodded slowly.
Marcus looked at Patricia.
"Did you strike her?""
Patricia's eyes widened.
"Absolutely not.""
The answer came too quickly.
Officer James stepped forward.
"Sir, I responded to the scene. The passenger reported that Ms. Coleman struck her. Her cheek is visibly swollen, and several witnesses were present.""
Patricia turned sharply.
"Officer, you weren't here when it happened.""
"No," Officer James replied.
"But I am here now, and I am investigating.""
Marcus looked at Mark.
"Did you witness the incident?""
Mark stared at the floor.
"I was standing nearby.""
"That wasn't my question.""
Patricia stepped between them.
"Mark was following my instructions.""
Marcus's voice became firm.
"Mark can speak for himself.""
The young assistant swallowed.
Then he looked at me.
"I'm sorry.""
Patricia spun toward him.
"Excuse me?""
Mark's hands tightened around his tablet.
"I saw what happened.""
The room seemed to shrink.
Marcus asked quietly, "What did you see?""
Mark looked down.
"Ms. Coleman slapped her. Danielle fell while holding the baby.""
Patricia's mouth fell open.
"Mark!""
He continued.
"She asked for help. I told her to leave.""
My father looked at him.
"And why did you do that?""
Mark struggled to find an answer.
"I was following instructions.""
My father took one step closer.
"Following instructions is not an excuse for abandoning a woman who has just been assaulted while holding a newborn.""
Mark lowered his eyes.
"No, sir.""
For the first time since the incident began, Patricia looked frightened.
But she wasn't ready to surrender.
She pointed at me.
"Mr. Brooks, with all due respect, you should understand that these situations are complicated. We deal with difficult passengers every day.""
My father stared at her.
"Did you just call my daughter difficult?""
Patricia shifted her weight.
"I meant that we have procedures.""
"Then let's discuss procedures.""
He turned toward Marcus.
"How long has this woman been managing this lounge?""
Marcus looked at his tablet.
"Three years.""
"And how many complaints have been filed against her?""
Marcus hesitated.
"I'll need to check the records.""
My father nodded.
"Check them.""
Patricia immediately interrupted.
"There have been no substantiated complaints.""
Marcus looked at her.
"I didn't ask you.""
The passengers were now openly recording.
One man who had laughed when I fell quietly lowered his phone.
My father noticed.
He looked around the lounge.
"How many people here witnessed what happened?""
Nobody moved.
Then a young woman in a cream-colored sweater raised her hand.
"I did.""
Officer James approached her.
"Can I have your name?""
"Emily Carter.""
She glanced at me.
"I'm sorry. I should have helped you.""
I managed a small nod.
"Thank you for speaking now.""
Emily looked at Patricia.
"I recorded part of it. I didn't get the actual slap, but I got what happened immediately afterward.""
Patricia's eyes widened.
"That recording was made without permission.""
Emily frowned.
"I was standing in a public lounge.""
Marcus held out his hand.
"Would you be willing to provide a copy to airport security?""
"Yes.""
Another passenger raised his hand.
"I have the whole thing.""
Everyone turned.
He was the man in the navy suit who had been laughing earlier.
My stomach tightened.
He looked embarrassed.
"I was recording because I thought it was going to be some argument about access. I didn't realize she was going to hit her.""
My father looked at him.
"Then you have something important.""
The man nodded.
"I'll send it to security.""
Patricia's expression hardened.
"You're all making this much bigger than it needs to be.""
My father slowly turned toward her.
"A woman was struck in the face while holding a newborn. What would you consider big enough?""
She didn't answer.
Marcus took a breath.
"Ms. Coleman, please hand over your lounge access credentials and company identification.""
Patricia stared at him.
"What?""
"Effective immediately, you are being removed from duty pending an investigation.""
Her voice rose.
"You cannot be serious.""
"I am completely serious.""
She looked at my father.
"Mr. Brooks, surely you understand that one mistake shouldn't destroy someone's career.""
My father glanced at my daughter.
Amara had finally stopped crying.
Her tiny hand rested against my chest.
He looked back at Patricia.
"One mistake?""
He paused.
"You struck my daughter. You humiliated her in front of strangers. You tried to remove her instead of helping her. Then you instructed your assistant to falsify the circumstances.""
Patricia shook her head.
"I did not falsify anything.""
"Your own assistant just contradicted you.""
"He's lying!""
Mark flinched.
Marcus raised a hand.
"Enough.""
Patricia turned toward him.
"Do you know how much work I've done for this company?""
Marcus answered without hesitation.
"At the moment, I'm more interested in the work you failed to do.""
He turned toward the security supervisors.
"Please escort Ms. Coleman to the administrative office. Do not allow her to access the lounge systems or contact staff about this incident.""
Patricia looked around desperately.
Nobody came to her defense.
Not the receptionist.
Not the passengers.
Not even Mark.
As security approached, she looked at me.
"You think you've won?""
My father stepped forward.
"No.""
His voice was quiet.
"And that's precisely what you should be worried about.""
The security officers escorted her toward the exit.
But before she disappeared, she turned back.
"You have no idea who you're dealing with!""
My father didn't follow her.
He simply looked at Marcus.
"Find out.""
Then he turned to me.
"Let's get you and the baby somewhere comfortable.""
Marcus immediately instructed the lounge staff to prepare a private nursing suite.
Officer James asked whether I wanted medical attention.
I nodded.
My cheek was throbbing, and my hip hurt from the fall.
My father carefully took my carryall.
"Give me the baby for a second while you adjust your cardigan.""
I smiled faintly.
"I've got her, Dad.""
He kissed Amara's forehead.
"I know you do.""
For the first time that afternoon, I felt safe.
But Marcus hadn't finished speaking.
He was standing a few feet away, studying something on his tablet.
His expression had changed.
"Richard?""
My father looked up.
"What is it?""
Marcus hesitated.
"I checked the passenger account.""
"And?""
Marcus looked at me.
"Danielle's boarding pass is valid. There's no question about that.""
"Then what?""
He lowered his voice.
"There's another issue.""
My father frowned.
"Tell me.""
Marcus turned the tablet around.
On the screen was an internal passenger-service note attached to my reservation.
It had been entered two days earlier.
The note read:
*FLAG PASSENGER FOR ADDITIONAL SCREENING. DO NOT PROVIDE PREMIUM LOUNGE ASSISTANCE. ESCALATE TO LOUNGE MANAGEMENT.*
My blood ran cold.
I looked at Marcus.
"Who put that there?""
He scrolled down.
A username appeared.
My father leaned closer.
Then his expression changed in a way I had never seen before.
Because the note hadn't been entered by Patricia Coleman.
It hadn't come from the lounge.
It had been entered by someone in the airline's executive office.
Someone with authority to interfere with my travel arrangements.
Marcus looked directly at my father.
"Richard, there's something else. The instruction was entered using an executive-level account.""
My father took the tablet.
He read the name beneath the entry.
Then he looked at me.
And quietly said:
"Danielle, I think this wasn't an accident.""
I stared at the screen.
Because the person who had ordered the special treatment against me...
Was someone I knew.
Someone who had attended our family dinner.
May you like
Someone my father trusted.
*And their name was about to turn this airport incident into something far more dangerous.*
