Chapter 9: The Brother Who Came Back With the Truth

I arrived at the old office building at 6:40 the following morning.

My father didn't know where I was.

I had told him I needed breakfast and some quiet time before the shareholder meeting.

It wasn't exactly a lie.

I needed quiet.

And I needed answers.

Amara was with a trusted family caregiver in the hotel suite. Helen had arranged the appointment, and my father had insisted that I take someone with me.

But I had refused to bring security into the meeting with Jason.

I wanted him to speak without feeling surrounded.

The building was almost empty.

Its lobby smelled of floor polish and old carpet.

A security guard directed me toward the fourth floor.

Jason was waiting beside a glass conference-room door.

He looked exhausted.

His expensive shirt was wrinkled.

His eyes were red.

When he saw me, he stood.

"Danielle.""

I didn't hug him.

"Talk.""

He looked toward the hallway.

"Can we sit?""

"No.""

He nodded.

"Fair enough.""

He held out a thick brown envelope.

"Mom left this for me.""

I stared at it.

"Why would Mom leave something for you?""

"Because she knew I might make the wrong decision.""

I didn't take the envelope.

"What decision?""

Jason swallowed.

"Whether to tell the truth.""

I folded my arms.

"Then start talking.""

He looked down.

"Evelyn approached me six months ago. She said Dad was preparing to give you control of the family trust.""

I said nothing.

"She told me that if you controlled those shares, Dad would eventually give you a position on the board. She said the company would become a family inheritance that excluded me.""

I stared at him.

"So you helped her.""

He shook his head.

"At first, I thought she was just trying to protect my future.""

"Your future?""

"Yes.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Jason, you have a career. You have money. You have everything you need.""

He looked at me.

"That's what I thought too.""

"Then why sign the statement?""

He rubbed his face.

"Because Evelyn told me she had proof you were struggling after childbirth. She showed me messages you supposedly sent her.""

I frowned.

"What messages?""

"Messages saying you couldn't handle the baby. That you were afraid of being alone. That you sometimes wished you could disappear.""

My stomach tightened.

I had never sent those messages.

"She fabricated them?""

Jason nodded.

"I didn't know that at the time.""

I looked away.

There had been difficult nights.

Nights when Amara cried for hours.

Nights when I sat on the bathroom floor, exhausted, wondering whether I was doing anything right.

But I had never told Evelyn those things.

And even if I had, struggling after childbirth would not have made me incapable of raising my daughter.

"Did you believe her?""

Jason looked ashamed.

"Yes.""

I stared at him.

"Why?""

"Because she said she was worried about you.""

I shook my head.

"She was worried about the inheritance.""

Jason lowered his eyes.

"I know.""

I pointed toward the envelope.

"What's inside?""

He opened it.

There were three documents.

The first was a handwritten letter from my mother.

The second was a photocopy of a bank transfer.

The third was a photograph of Evelyn standing beside Daniel Whitmore outside a private office.

I picked up the photograph.

"When was this taken?""

Jason answered.

"Three months before Mom died.""

I examined the date.

"Why do you have this?""

"Mom gave it to me a few weeks before she passed.""

I looked at him.

"What did she tell you?""

He hesitated.

"She told me that if anything happened to her, I should never let Evelyn become the temporary custodian of the trust.""

I felt my heart pounding.

"Did you know about the airport incident?""

"No.""

"Did you know Evelyn had asked Victoria to flag my reservation?""

"No. I swear.""

"Did you know Daniel was involved in the financial transfers?""

Jason nodded slowly.

"I knew something was wrong.""

I stared at him.

"Then why didn't you tell Dad?""

He looked down.

"Because Daniel offered me a position.""

I closed my eyes.

There it was again.

Money.

Power.

The company.

My brother had chosen a title over his sister.

"What position?""

"Deputy director of corporate development.""

I stared at him.

"And what did you have to do?""

He didn't answer.

"Jason.""

He swallowed.

"I had to support the Atlantic Crown merger.""

I stepped back.

"Did you understand what the merger involved?""

"Not completely.""

"Did you know Mom had opposed it?""

"Yes.""

I looked at the photograph again.

Then I opened the letter.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

My dear Jason,

I know you love your father, and I know you want to prove yourself. But never allow someone to turn your need for approval into a weapon against your family.

Evelyn is not what she appears to be.

Daniel has been moving company funds through private subsidiaries. I have found evidence that the Atlantic Crown acquisition is being used to conceal those transfers.

Your father believes he can correct the problem from inside the company. I am afraid he is underestimating how far these people will go.

If Danielle ever has a child, the trust will become active. Protect her. Protect the baby. Do not allow anyone to convince her that she is incapable of making her own decisions.

I stopped reading.

There was another paragraph.

And Jason, if you ever feel tempted to choose money over your sister, remember this: the family is not the company. The company is not the family.

I lowered the letter.

My eyes were burning.

"She trusted you.""

Jason nodded.

"I know.""

"And you betrayed her.""

He began crying.

"I know.""

I turned away.

He stepped closer.

"Danielle, I made a terrible mistake.""

I looked at him.

"You didn't make one mistake. You signed a document saying I couldn't raise my own daughter. You helped Evelyn take control of something Mom left to me. And you watched while they tried to make me look unstable.""

He wiped his face.

"I thought I was protecting my future.""

"What about mine?""

He had no answer.

I picked up the bank transfer.

It showed a payment of $4.8 million from an Atlantic Crown subsidiary to a private investment company.

The account holder was Evelyn's brother.

I looked at Jason.

"Did Mom know about this?""

"Yes.""

"Did she tell Dad?""

"She tried.""

"Why didn't he listen?""

Jason hesitated.

"Because Daniel convinced him that the transaction was part of a legitimate restructuring.""

I stared at the paper.

"Was it?""

Jason shook his head.

"No.""

Then he reached into his pocket and removed a small flash drive.

"This is the important part.""

I looked at it.

"What's on there?""

"Audio recordings.""

My heart began beating faster.

"Of whom?""

"Evelyn and Daniel.""

I stared at him.

"How did you get these?""

"Mom recorded several conversations before she died. She gave me a copy and told me to keep it somewhere safe.""

"Why didn't you give it to Helen?""

Jason looked ashamed.

"Because I didn't want to get involved.""

I shook my head.

"You're already involved.""

He nodded.

"I know.""

I took the flash drive.

"Does Dad know about this?""

"No.""

"Why?""

"Because the recordings include a conversation about the original acquisition authorization.""

I looked at him.

"What conversation?""

Jason lowered his voice.

"Daniel says he had someone forge Dad's signature on the second transfer. But Evelyn says Dad knew more than he admitted.""

I stared at him.

"You're saying Dad might have known?""

"I'm saying we need to listen.""

I looked at the clock.

7:15 a.m.

The shareholder meeting began at nine.

I had less than two hours.

I called Helen.

She answered immediately.

"Danielle?""

"I have something you need to hear.""

"Where are you?""

I gave her the address.

"Stay there. I'm coming.""

Helen arrived twenty minutes later.

She brought a digital evidence specialist.

We connected the flash drive to a secure laptop.

There were four audio files.

The first contained a conversation between Evelyn and Daniel.

Their voices were unmistakable.

Evelyn spoke first.

"Richard won't agree to the merger if Eleanor keeps interfering.""

Daniel answered.

"Then we need to separate the trust from the chairman's office.""

"How?""

"Make the beneficiary look incapable of managing it.""

Evelyn laughed.

"Danielle?""

"She's young. She has no experience. And once she has a baby, everyone will believe she's overwhelmed.""

My hands went cold.

Evelyn answered:

"Jason will support me.""

Daniel chuckled.

"Jason wants the position. He'll do what he's told.""

I looked at my brother.

He lowered his head.

The recording continued.

Evelyn said something that made Helen stop the audio.

"Wait.""

She rewound it.

Then played the sentence again.

"If Danielle becomes the controlling beneficiary, we lose the acquisition. And Richard loses control of the company.""

Helen paused.

"That's important.""

I looked at her.

"Why?""

"Because it establishes motive.""

She continued listening.

Daniel's voice returned.

"What about Eleanor?""

Evelyn answered:

"She won't be a problem much longer.""

The room went silent.

My blood ran cold.

Helen rewound the recording.

"Play that again.""

The sentence repeated.

She won't be a problem much longer.

I looked at Jason.

"Did Mom hear this?""

He nodded.

"She was frightened.""

"Why didn't she go to the police?""

Jason shook his head.

"She thought Dad could fix it.""

Helen opened another audio file.

This one was recorded several weeks later.

Daniel was speaking to someone.

His voice sounded irritated.

"The transfer was completed. Richard signed the authorization.""

A second voice answered.

Evelyn.

"Are you certain?""

"Yes. The funds are out.""

"And Eleanor?""

"She has the original records.""

Evelyn lowered her voice.

"Then get them.""

The audio ended.

Helen sat back.

"This is substantial evidence of a coordinated financial scheme.""

I looked at the final file.

"What's that one?""

Jason swallowed.

"Mom recorded it on the day she confronted Dad.""

Helen pressed play.

My mother's voice filled the room.

"Richard, you have to listen to me. Daniel is using your authority to move money. If you sign another document, they'll make you responsible for everything.""

My father's voice followed.

"I trust Daniel. He's been with us for twenty years.""

My mother sounded exhausted.

"That's exactly why he's dangerous.""

Then came a long silence.

Finally, my father spoke.

"Do you think I would deliberately put our family at risk?""

My mother answered quietly.

"No. I think you are so afraid of losing control that you don't see who is controlling you.""

The recording ended.

I sat motionless.

My father hadn't deliberately stolen money.

But he had ignored my mother's warnings.

He had trusted Daniel.

He had allowed Evelyn into the company.

And he had never told me the truth.

Helen closed the laptop.

"We need to preserve these recordings and present them to the board.""

Jason looked at me.

"Will you tell Dad?""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

"Will he forgive me?""

I stared at him.

"That's not my decision.""

Jason began crying again.

I picked up the flash drive.

"Jason, I don't know if I can trust you anymore.""

He nodded.

"I understand.""

"But if you're genuinely sorry, tell the truth today. In front of everyone.""

He looked at the floor.

"Okay.""

Helen checked the time.

"Danielle, we need to leave. The meeting begins in forty-five minutes.""

I gathered the letter and documents.

As we reached the elevator, my phone rang.

My father.

I answered.

"Dad?""

His voice sounded strained.

"Where are you?""

"I'm on my way.""

"Danielle, listen to me. Evelyn just filed an emergency motion to suspend your beneficiary rights.""

I stopped walking.

"What?""

"She has submitted the signed statement from Jason and several medical documents.""

I looked at my brother.

He went pale.

"What medical documents?""

My father continued.

"She's claiming you've been hospitalized for a psychological emergency.""

I stared at Helen.

"That's impossible. I've never been hospitalized.""

Helen immediately reached for the phone.

"Richard, don't respond to the filing yet. We have new evidence.""

My father lowered his voice.

"There's something else.""

"What?""

"Evelyn has arrived at the shareholder meeting with a court order.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"Does she have the right to take my shares?""

My father paused.

Then he answered:

"She has convinced someone to sign an emergency temporary order.""

I looked down at the flash drive.

My mother's recordings might expose everything.

But the clock was running out.

And when I stepped into that meeting, Evelyn would already be standing at the front of the room, claiming that I was incapable of protecting my own daughter.

May you like

I took a deep breath.

"Then let's go.""
