Chapter 4: The Name Behind the Warning

My father didn't speak for almost a full minute.

He stood beside the nursing suite entrance, holding Marcus Reed's tablet with both hands. His eyes moved slowly across the screen, reading the same name again and again.

I had never seen him look so unsettled.

"Dad?"" I asked.

He looked up.

"Did you recognize the person who entered that note?""

He nodded.

"Yes.""

"Who?""

He glanced at Marcus.

"Not here.""

Marcus immediately understood.

"There's a conference room upstairs. We can secure it and bring in the appropriate investigators.""

My father handed the tablet back.

"Do that. And nobody deletes anything from that system.""

Marcus nodded.

"I'll have IT preserve the access logs.""

I adjusted Amara's blanket.

"Dad, please tell me what's happening.""

He looked at my daughter before answering.

"There's a possibility someone deliberately arranged for you to be mistreated.""

"Why would anyone do that?""

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Marcus.

"Who else has access to executive travel instructions?""

"Only a handful of people. The chairman's office, the executive travel director, and certain security administrators.""

"Get me the complete list.""

Marcus walked toward the door.

"I'll have it within ten minutes.""

My father sat beside me.

"Danielle, I need you to listen carefully. Don't contact anyone about that note yet.""

"Why?""

"Because whoever entered it may not know we've discovered it.""

I looked down at my phone.

My family group chat had several unread messages.

One was from my stepmother, Evelyn.

*Hope your flight is going smoothly, sweetheart. See you tonight.*

Another was from my younger half-brother, Jason.

*Dad says you're coming. Don't be late.*

I stared at Evelyn's message.

She had called me sweetheart.

She had asked about the baby.

And two days earlier, someone had entered an instruction designed to make sure I was denied basic assistance.

"Dad," I whispered.

He looked at me.

"Could it be Evelyn?""

His jaw tightened.

"Don't make assumptions.""

"But you recognized the name.""

He looked toward the window.

"Yes.""

A few seconds later, Marcus returned.

He placed a printed document on the table.

The name appeared at the bottom.

*VICTORIA HALE — EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE AND CORPORATE RELATIONS.*

I stared at it.

"Victoria?""

My father nodded.

Victoria Hale had been his executive assistant years ago.

She had helped organize his first major international acquisition.

She had attended my mother's funeral.

She had sent flowers when Amara was born.

And she was now one of the most powerful people in the company.

"Why would she do this?"" I asked.

My father rubbed his forehead.

"Victoria has been asking for greater control over the company's executive operations. I've refused several proposals.""

Marcus leaned forward.

"That doesn't explain why she would target Danielle.""

My father looked at him.

"No. It doesn't.""

I picked up my phone.

"Maybe she made a mistake.""

Marcus shook his head.

"The instruction was entered deliberately. It was categorized as a high-priority passenger handling restriction.""

I felt sick.

"So Patricia wasn't randomly deciding whether I belonged in that lounge?""

"That's what we're investigating," Marcus replied.

My father stood.

"Bring Victoria into the conference room.""

Marcus hesitated.

"Richard, I recommend we involve legal first.""

"Then involve legal. But I want her here.""

He looked at me.

"And Danielle, I want you to hear everything.""

Twenty-five minutes later, I sat in a private conference room on the upper level of the terminal.

Amara was asleep against my chest.

A medical attendant had examined my cheek and recommended that I get an X-ray if the pain continued.

My father sat across from me.

Marcus stood near the television.

Two corporate security investigators were reviewing the digital access records.

Then the door opened.

Victoria Hale entered wearing a navy designer suit and pearl earrings.

She was in her late fifties, with perfectly styled blonde hair.

She carried a leather folder.

"Richard," she said warmly.

"Marcus. What's going on?""

Then she noticed me.

Her smile became wider.

"Danielle! Oh, sweetheart. I heard there was an incident.""

She approached as if she intended to hug me.

I didn't move.

She stopped.

"Are you all right?""

I looked at her.

"You tell me.""

Her smile faltered.

Marcus placed the printed instruction on the table.

"Victoria, did you enter this passenger-handling restriction?""

She glanced at the paper.

Then she looked at Marcus.

"Yes.""

My stomach tightened.

She admitted it without hesitation.

"Why?"" my father asked.

Victoria sat down.

"Richard, this was a routine operational precaution.""

"A precaution against what?""

"Potential disruption.""

My father stared at her.

"Danielle was traveling with a newborn.""

Victoria opened her folder.

"There had been concerns regarding the reservation.""

"What concerns?""

"Her travel profile was unusual.""

I leaned forward.

"Unusual how?""

Victoria glanced at me.

"Danielle, this isn't personal.""

I almost laughed.

"Someone flagged my ticket, denied me assistance, and I was slapped in front of a room full of strangers. How is that not personal?""

She sighed.

"I didn't instruct anyone to slap you.""

"But you instructed them to treat me as a problem.""

"That's an unfair interpretation.""

My father placed both hands on the table.

"Who requested the restriction?""

Victoria paused.

Then she said something that made the room go silent.

"Your wife.""

My father didn't move.

"What?""

"Evelyn contacted my office.""

I stared at her.

"My stepmother?""

Victoria nodded.

"She said Danielle was experiencing emotional difficulties and might create a public scene.""

My face grew hot.

"That's a lie.""

Victoria continued.

"She specifically asked that lounge staff be advised to maintain a discreet distance and refer any concerns to management.""

I turned toward my father.

He looked genuinely stunned.

"Did Evelyn ask you to deny my daughter access to a lounge she had paid for?""

Victoria looked uncomfortable.

"She asked us to prevent an embarrassing situation.""

I felt my hands begin to shake.

"Embarrassing for whom?""

Nobody answered.

I remembered Evelyn's message.

*Hope your flight is going smoothly, sweetheart.*

I suddenly understood why it had felt so strange.

She had known exactly where I was.

She had known exactly when I was traveling.

And she had known I would be carrying Amara.

My father stood.

"Why didn't you call me?""

Victoria looked down.

"Because Evelyn said you were aware of the situation.""

"I was not.""

"She told me you wanted Danielle's travel handled quietly.""

My father turned toward Marcus.

"Get Evelyn on the phone.""

Marcus nodded.

Victoria quickly interrupted.

"Richard, perhaps we should resolve this internally. There is no reason to involve family members in an operational disagreement.""

My father looked at her.

"You involved my family when you used company systems to target my daughter.""

Victoria's expression hardened.

"Please don't turn this into something it isn't.""

He leaned forward.

"Then tell me exactly what it is.""

Victoria remained silent.

One of the investigators approached Marcus and whispered something.

Marcus read the note.

His face changed.

"Richard?""

"What?""

"The restriction wasn't the only action.""

He placed another document on the table.

A second entry showed that someone had attempted to change my return-flight reservation.

My original ticket had been scheduled for three days later.

The proposed replacement was a flight departing that same evening.

And attached to the request was a note:

*PASSENGER SHOULD BE RETURNED TO HOME ADDRESS WITHOUT ADDITIONAL ESCALATION.*

I stared at the screen.

"Someone wanted me sent home?""

My father slowly turned toward Victoria.

"Who authorized this?""

Victoria looked at the document.

Then she whispered:

"Evelyn.""

But the investigator wasn't finished.

He opened another file.

"There's one more thing, sir.""

My father looked at him.

"What?""

"The account that submitted the return-flight change wasn't Victoria's.""

The investigator enlarged the record.

It belonged to a different executive.

A man named Daniel Whitmore.

My father's longtime financial adviser.

And according to the access logs, Daniel had approved the change before I had even boarded my flight.

My father stared at the screen.

Then he picked up his phone.

"Call Evelyn.""

She answered immediately.

"Richard! Is Danielle with you?""

My father put the call on speaker.

"Yes.""

"Oh, thank goodness. I heard something happened at the airport.""

I looked at the phone.

My father asked calmly, "What did you tell Victoria?""

There was a pause.

"About what?""

"About Danielle's travel.""

Evelyn laughed nervously.

"Richard, I was only trying to help.""

"Help whom?""

"All of us.""

My father closed his eyes.

Then he asked:

"Did you instruct the airline to have my daughter treated as a security risk?""

Evelyn's silence was answer enough.

And then she said something that made my blood run cold.

"Richard, you need to understand. Danielle was never supposed to have access to that lounge in the first place.""

My father looked at me.

"What exactly do you mean by that?""

Evelyn lowered her voice.

"Because the chairman's travel privileges were supposed to be transferred to Jason's account. Not hers.""

I stared at the phone.

Jason?

My younger brother?

What did my daughter's existence have to do with his privileges?

Then Evelyn added:

"And there's something else you need to know about Danielle's inheritance.""

The call suddenly disconnected.

My father stared at the screen.

I looked at him.

"What inheritance?""

He didn't answer.

Because for the first time that afternoon, I realized the slap in the airport might have been only the beginning.

Someone wasn't simply trying to humiliate me.

May you like

Someone was trying to make sure I disappeared from a much bigger family decision.

And my stepmother knew exactly why.
