Chapter 3: The Owner Walked Through the Door

Vanessa had stopped smiling.

That was the first thing I noticed.

The second thing was that Brett had suddenly become very interested in the floor.

My father stood beside me, holding Grace's tiny hand while speaking into his phone.

He didn't raise his voice.

He didn't threaten anyone.

He simply waited.

And somehow, that made the entire restaurant feel smaller.

Vanessa cleared her throat.

"Sir, I think there's been a misunderstanding.""

My father ended the call.

"Is that right?""

"Yes. Your daughter arrived without following our private dining guidelines.""

He glanced at me.

"Did you have a reservation?""

"Yes.""

"Did they confirm it?""

"Yes.""

"Did you tell them who you were meeting?""

"Yes.""

He nodded.

Then he turned toward Vanessa.

"Interesting.""

She folded her arms.

"Mr...?""

"Richard Carter.""

She waited for him to say something else.

He didn't.

"Well, Mr. Carter, I appreciate that you're upset, but we have a responsibility to protect the experience of our other guests.""

My father looked at the people sitting nearby.

One man quickly lowered his wineglass.

Another turned toward his plate.

My father returned his attention to Vanessa.

"Protect the experience?""

"Yes.""

"By striking a woman holding a newborn?""

Vanessa's mouth opened.

Then closed.

"I did not strike her without reason.""

My father's expression changed.

"You're saying my daughter deserved to be slapped?""

"That's not what I said.""

"Then tell me what you said.""

Brett stepped forward.

"Sir, we should probably discuss this privately.""

My father looked at him.

"You had an opportunity to prevent this.""

Brett swallowed.

"I was trying to manage the situation.""

"By telling a woman who had just been assaulted to leave?""

Brett didn't answer.

My father turned toward me.

"Danielle, did anyone call an ambulance?""

"No.""

"Did anyone call the police?""

"No.""

He nodded.

Then he looked at one of the men accompanying him.

"James, please contact the police. Tell them we have an assault incident and witnesses.""

James immediately took out his phone.

Vanessa raised her voice.

"Now, wait a minute! There's no need to involve the police.""

My father looked at her.

"You were comfortable involving your hands. Why are you uncomfortable involving the police?""

One of the diners coughed to hide a laugh.

Vanessa shot him a furious look.

"Mr. Lawson, please don't encourage this.""

My father noticed the name.

"Mr. Lawson. Were you here when my daughter was struck?""

The man hesitated.

"I saw some of what happened.""

"Did you see her hit my daughter?""

He looked toward Vanessa.

Then at the floor.

"I don't want to get involved.""

My father nodded.

"That's unfortunate.""

Vanessa seized the opportunity.

"Exactly. This is a private matter. We can resolve it without making a scene.""

My father looked around.

"Madam, you made the scene when you put your hands on my daughter.""

She stepped closer.

"Your daughter was being disruptive.""

"She was holding a baby.""

"She was refusing to leave.""

"Because she had a reservation.""

Vanessa's cheeks reddened.

"Sir, you don't understand what we deal with here. People constantly try to get access to private events.""

My father stared at her.

"Did you verify the reservation?""

Brett answered quietly.

"Yes.""

"Was it valid?""

"Yes.""

"Then what was the problem?""

Neither employee spoke.

A few seconds passed.

Then a voice came from behind the reception desk.

"Mr. Carter?""

We all turned.

The young hostess who had initially checked my reservation was standing near the entrance.

She looked terrified.

My father nodded.

"Yes?""

She swallowed.

"I can confirm that Miss Carter's reservation was valid. Her father's name was on the booking, and the notes specifically said she would arrive with an infant.""

Vanessa snapped her head toward her.

"Why didn't you say that earlier?""

The hostess looked confused.

"I did. You told me to bring you over.""

"That isn't what happened.""

The hostess lowered her eyes.

My father looked at her.

"What's your name?""

"Olivia.""

"Thank you, Olivia.""

He turned to James.

"Please make sure her statement is included.""

Olivia looked as though she might cry.

Then my father asked for the restaurant's general manager's office.

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"I am the general manager.""

He nodded.

"Then we'll wait for the owner.""

She stared at him.

"The owner?""

"Yes.""

"Why would he come here for this?""

My father looked at her for a long moment.

"Because I called him.""

Brett suddenly lifted his head.

"Who did you call?""

My father didn't answer.

Instead, he walked toward an empty chair and gently placed his coat over the back.

Then he looked at me.

"Are you comfortable, sweetheart?""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

"Do you need anything?""

"Water, maybe.""

He turned toward the nearest waiter.

"Could we get a glass of water for my daughter, please?""

A young man hurried over.

"Of course, sir.""

Vanessa watched the exchange.

Then she looked at my father more carefully.

Something was beginning to bother her.

Perhaps it was the two men standing behind him.

Perhaps it was the way the hostess had spoken to him.

Or perhaps it was the fact that he had never once asked for permission to stand where he was standing.

She approached Brett and whispered something.

I couldn't hear every word.

But I caught enough.

"Find out who he is.""

Brett pulled out his phone.

My father heard him.

"There's no need to whisper.""

Both employees froze.

He continued.

"My name is Richard Carter. You can look it up.""

Brett typed quickly.

His eyes widened.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

She snatched the phone from his hand.

"What?""

He whispered.

"Vanessa...""

She stared at the screen.

I couldn't see what was written.

But I saw the color drain from her face.

"What is this?"" she whispered.

My father sat beside me.

"Is Grace hungry?""

I checked the diaper bag.

"She might need her bottle.""

He nodded.

"Let's get her comfortable.""

He was behaving as if nothing unusual was happening.

But across the room, Vanessa was rapidly scrolling through something on Brett's phone.

Suddenly, she looked up.

"Mr. Carter?""

My father didn't turn.

"Yes?""

"Are you... Richard Carter from Carter Hospitality?""

He finally looked at her.

"That's correct.""

Her lips parted.

Carter Hospitality was a major hospitality and commercial property group. Its name appeared on office towers, hotels, event centers, and restaurant properties across several states.

I knew my father had built a successful company.

What I didn't know was that the Sterling Room had recently become part of it.

My father had never told me.

Vanessa stared at him.

"You're the...""

He interrupted gently.

"Let's not make this about me.""

Brett stepped backward.

"Sir, I sincerely apologize for the misunderstanding.""

My father looked at him.

"Which misunderstanding?""

Brett swallowed.

"The situation with your daughter.""

"Was it a misunderstanding when he watched her fall?""

Brett said nothing.

My father continued.

"Was it a misunderstanding when you told her to leave instead of asking whether she needed medical attention?""

Brett lowered his head.

"No, sir.""

Vanessa quickly stepped forward.

"Mr. Carter, I can explain everything. We were dealing with a difficult situation, and emotions were running high.""

My father looked at her.

"Did you slap her?""

Vanessa hesitated.

"I may have made physical contact.""

I stared at her.

"Physical contact?""

She ignored me.

"I was attempting to direct her away from the entrance.""

My father stood.

"Don't rewrite what happened.""

His voice remained quiet.

"She was holding a newborn. You struck her. She fell. And then you laughed about it with your employees.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"That's not fair.""

"Then let's watch the security footage.""

Her expression changed immediately.

Brett looked toward the security office.

My father noticed.

"What's the problem?""

"Nothing, sir.""

"Good. Then retrieve the footage.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"I think we should wait until our legal department is present.""

My father nodded.

"That's your right.""

He looked toward James.

"Make sure the footage is preserved immediately.""

James made another call.

Then the restaurant's front doors opened.

A man in his early sixties entered wearing a black suit and a silver tie. He was carrying a leather document case.

Behind him walked a woman with a tablet.

The man scanned the room.

Then his eyes landed on my father.

"Richard.""

My father nodded.

"Daniel.""

The man approached and shook his hand.

"I'm sorry it took me so long.""

Vanessa looked between them.

Her face had gone completely white.

Daniel turned toward her.

"Vanessa Whitmore?""

"Yes?""

He glanced at Brett.

"And Brett Collins?""

Brett nodded stiffly.

Daniel opened his leather case.

He removed a folder and placed it on the nearest table.

"Before we discuss anything else, I want everyone to understand why I'm here.""

He looked directly at my father.

Then at me.

Then at the red mark on my cheek.

His expression hardened.

"I'm Daniel Brooks, president of Carter Hospitality's restaurant division.""

Vanessa barely managed to speak.

"President?""

Daniel nodded.

"And this restaurant is one of our properties.""

She stared at him.

Brett looked as though his knees might give way.

Daniel opened the folder.

"Mr. Carter, as requested, I brought the ownership documents and the latest management records.""

He turned one page.

Then another.

Finally, he looked up.

"There's something else you should know.""

My father folded his arms.

"What is it?""

Daniel glanced toward Vanessa.

"Your daughter wasn't just invited to dinner tonight.""

He paused.

"She was scheduled to attend the private announcement of the Sterling Room's new ownership and management structure.""

Vanessa grabbed the edge of the table.

Daniel continued.

"And according to the signed documents, Miss Carter is...""

He stopped.

His eyes moved toward me.

Then he finished the sentence.

"...the new majority owner of this restaurant.""

For a moment, I couldn't breathe.

Vanessa stared at me.

Brett's phone slipped from his hand and hit the floor.

My father gently touched my shoulder.

"Surprise, sweetheart.""

And suddenly, I understood why he had insisted that I bring Grace.

But there was one more document inside that folder.

One document that would make Vanessa wish she had never raised her hand.

Daniel slowly pulled it out.

"Richard," he said, "there's a problem with the current management contract.""

My father looked at him.

"What problem?""

Daniel turned the document around.

And pointed to a signature.

Vanessa's signature.

"She has been using the restaurant's private dining policy to deny service to certain guests for months.""

The room fell silent.

May you like

Then Daniel added:

"And we have the complaints to prove it.""
