Chapter 7: The Secret My Husband Took to His Grave
For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except the sound of my daughter's breathing.
Someone who knew exactly how Marcus died.
Vanessa Whitmore had just said those words in front of my father, Daniel Brooks, and nearly thirty restaurant employees and guests.
I stared at her.
"What did you just say?""
Vanessa looked toward the entrance.
"I shouldn't have said anything.""
My father stepped forward.
"No. You brought it up. Now finish what you started.""
She shook her head.
"I don't know all the details.""
"Then tell us what you know.""
Vanessa swallowed.
"Marcus was asking questions about the company's financial records before his death.""
Daniel frowned.
"What financial records?""
"Vendor payments. Property transfers. A few accounts that didn't seem to match the official reports.""
My father looked confused.
"Marcus never told me about this.""
Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.
"Maybe he didn't trust you.""
My father's expression hardened.
"Be very careful.""
She looked at me.
"He came here three times. The last time was about two weeks before he died.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
Two weeks.
I remembered those days.
Marcus had been unusually quiet. He spent long hours on his laptop and sometimes stepped outside to answer phone calls.
When I asked whether everything was okay, he always smiled.
"Just work, sweetheart.""
I had believed him.
I had been busy preparing for Grace's arrival.
I remembered him standing beside the crib, folding tiny white clothes.
I remembered asking why he looked so worried.
He had kissed my forehead.
"Nothing you need to worry about.""
Now those words felt different.
"What exactly was he investigating?"" I asked.
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
"An employee had been redirecting payments through a consulting company.""
Daniel's eyebrows rose.
"Which employee?""
She hesitated.
"I don't know.""
My father moved closer.
"Vanessa, you are either going to tell us what you know, or you are going to stop making accusations.""
She finally spoke.
"The regional finance director.""
Daniel went pale.
"Thomas Reed?""
Vanessa nodded.
Daniel immediately took out his phone.
"That's impossible.""
"Why?"" I asked.
"Thomas has been with the company for twelve years. He oversees financial reporting for several properties.""
My father looked at him.
"Call him.""
Daniel dialed.
The phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then a voicemail message played.
Daniel ended the call.
"He's not answering.""
My father turned toward James.
"Find out where he is.""
James nodded and stepped away.
I looked back at Vanessa.
"Why didn't you report this earlier?""
She folded her arms.
"Because I didn't want to get involved.""
"You knew my husband was investigating financial misconduct, and you said nothing?""
"I didn't know he was going to die!""
Her voice cracked.
The restaurant became silent again.
My father stared at her.
"Nobody said you did.""
Vanessa looked down.
I approached her slowly.
"Did Marcus ever tell you he was afraid?""
She shook her head.
"Not directly.""
"Then what did he say?""
She hesitated.
"He told me that if anything happened to him, I should contact Richard Carter.""
My father froze.
"When?""
"The last time he came here.""
"Why didn't you call me?""
Vanessa looked away.
"Because Thomas told me not to.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Thomas told you not to contact the owner?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because he said Marcus was investigating a matter that had already been resolved.""
I looked at my father.
"Did you know about any of this?""
He shook his head.
"No, sweetheart.""
Vanessa continued.
"Thomas said Marcus had misunderstood the accounts. He told me the company was handling everything internally.""
Daniel looked furious.
"Why would the finance director have any authority over what you tell the owner?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
Then something occurred to me.
"Where is the evidence?""
She looked at me.
"What?""
"If Marcus discovered something, where is the evidence?""
Vanessa swallowed.
"He left something here.""
My father immediately turned.
"What?""
"A package.""
Daniel frowned.
"Where?""
Vanessa pointed toward the private dining room.
"Inside the old manager's office. Behind the bottom drawer of the filing cabinet.""
My father looked at James.
"Check it.""
James walked toward the corridor.
Daniel followed.
I wanted to go with them, but Grace began moving in my arms.
I looked down.
Her little mouth opened, and she made a soft sound.
I gently rocked her.
"It's okay, baby. Mommy's here.""
My father remained beside me.
"Danielle, I want you to understand something.""
I looked up.
"What?""
"If there is evidence connecting Marcus's investigation to his death, we will handle it properly. We won't make accusations without proof.""
I nodded.
"But I need to know the truth.""
"I know.""
He touched my cheek carefully, avoiding the red mark.
"Your husband loved you. Whatever happened, he never wanted you to be afraid.""
I swallowed.
"I wish he had told me.""
My father looked toward the hallway.
"Me too.""
A few minutes later, James returned carrying a dusty brown envelope.
Daniel was behind him.
The envelope had been sealed with clear tape.
Written across the front were four words.
*FOR DANIELLE AND GRACE ONLY.*
My knees almost gave way.
I recognized the handwriting.
Marcus.
I reached for it.
My father gently steadied my arm.
"Take your time.""
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a small USB drive, a folded letter, and a photograph.
The photograph showed Marcus standing outside the Sterling Room with a man I didn't recognize.
The man wore a dark suit and stood with his back partially turned toward the camera.
On the back, Marcus had written:
*The person who knows where the money went.*
I unfolded the letter.
My hands were shaking.
My beautiful Danielle,
If you're reading this, something has happened that I hoped would never happen.
I wanted to tell you everything when Grace arrived. I wanted us to sit together in our kitchen, laugh about how serious I had been, and explain why your father and I were working so hard.
But I discovered something wrong inside the company.
Someone has been using our properties to move money through false vendor accounts. I found payments that were approved under names that shouldn't exist.
I confronted the person responsible.
They told me to stop asking questions.
I didn't.
I don't know how far this goes, but I know that the person in the photograph has access to information that could expose everything.
Danielle, if I'm not there to raise our daughter, please remember that you are stronger than you think.
Don't let anyone convince you that you don't belong in a room.
You belong wherever you decide to stand.
I love you both.
Marcus.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
A tear rolled down my cheek.
My father looked away, giving me a moment.
Then I turned the photograph over again.
"Who is this man?""
Daniel studied it.
His expression changed.
"That's Thomas Reed.""
My father took the photograph.
"Are you certain?""
"Yes. That's him.""
I looked at the picture.
Thomas Reed.
The finance director.
The man Marcus had supposedly been investigating.
I handed Daniel the USB drive.
"Can you open it?""
He nodded.
One of the employees brought a laptop.
Daniel inserted the drive.
A folder appeared.
There were spreadsheets, photographs, email records, and several audio files.
He opened the first spreadsheet.
Rows of payments filled the screen.
Different restaurant properties.
Different vendors.
Repeated amounts.
Daniel leaned closer.
"These are our accounts.""
My father studied the figures.
"How much money?""
Daniel scrolled.
Then he stopped.
"Approximately six million dollars over eighteen months.""
My father looked at him.
"Six million?""
Daniel nodded.
"Possibly more. These are only the transactions Marcus identified.""
I felt sick.
"Who received it?""
Daniel opened another file.
A company name appeared.
REED CONSULTING GROUP.
He stared at it.
"Thomas's private company.""
My father closed his eyes briefly.
Then he opened one of the audio files.
Marcus's voice filled the room.
"Dad, if you're hearing this, I need you to listen carefully. Thomas knows I've found the accounts. I think he's using the company to hide something much bigger.""
My father gripped the edge of the table.
The recording continued.
"There's one more thing. I found a payment authorization that carries your name.""
My father's head snapped up.
"What?""
The recording played on.
"I don't believe you approved it. But somebody used your digital authorization to move the money.""
Daniel looked horrified.
The audio continued.
"Don't confront Thomas until you've checked the original transaction records. Someone has access to the internal approval system.""
Then Marcus's voice became quieter.
"And Danielle, if you ever hear this, I'm sorry I kept it from you. I was trying to protect you.""
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
My father stared at the laptop.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
"Richard Carter.""
A man's voice came through.
I couldn't hear every word, but I recognized the name when my father repeated it.
"Thomas?""
His expression hardened.
"Where are you?""
A pause.
Then my father said:
"Don't leave.""
The call ended.
Daniel looked at him.
"Was that Thomas?""
My father nodded.
"He says he wants to explain.""
I looked at the photograph.
At Marcus's handwriting.
At the letter addressed to me and Grace.
Then I looked at my father.
"Let him explain.""
My father studied my face.
"Are you sure?""
I nodded.
"I've spent months wondering whether I missed something before Marcus died. I don't want another unanswered question.""
My father took a breath.
Then he turned toward Daniel.
"Bring Thomas here.""
And for the first time that evening, I saw something in my father's expression that I had never seen before.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Guilt.
May you like
Because if Marcus had been telling the truth, someone had used my father's name to steal millions of dollars.
And my husband might have died trying to prove it.
