Chapter 5: Someone Tried to Erase the Truth
My father's expression became unreadable.
"Who gave her the code?"" he asked.
Brett looked toward the kitchen doors.
"Mr. Carter, I think you need to speak with someone named Victor.""
Daniel immediately recognized the name.
"Victor Hayes? The security supervisor?""
Brett nodded.
"He was here when the incident happened.""
My stomach tightened.
"Was he watching the cameras?""
Brett hesitated.
"Yes.""
I stared at him.
"Then he saw everything.""
"Yes.""
"Why didn't he come out?""
Brett lowered his head.
"He was told not to interfere.""
My father turned toward Daniel.
"Bring him here.""
Daniel sent a message.
A few seconds later, a heavyset man in a black security uniform emerged from the corridor near the kitchen.
He was carrying a small radio and looked uncomfortable.
"Mr. Brooks?""
Daniel pointed toward the table.
"Victor, come here.""
Victor approached slowly.
"What's going on?""
My father looked at him.
"Did you observe the incident involving my daughter?""
Victor glanced at Vanessa.
Then back at my father.
"I was monitoring the security system.""
"That wasn't my question.""
Victor shifted his weight.
"Yes, sir. I saw what happened.""
"Did you see Vanessa strike her?""
A pause.
"Yes.""
"Did you report it?""
"No, sir.""
"Why?""
Victor rubbed his neck.
"I was told to preserve the footage and wait for management instructions.""
My father looked toward Vanessa.
"By whom?""
Victor said nothing.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Victor, did you access the recording after the incident?""
Victor's face tightened.
"I was checking the system.""
"Did you delete anything?""
"No.""
Daniel turned his tablet around.
"The system log shows that your account accessed the recording at 7:18 p.m. It also shows that the original file was altered at 7:21.""
Victor stared at the screen.
"I didn't delete anything.""
"Then explain the missing segment.""
Victor looked at Vanessa again.
She spoke quickly.
"He was only following protocol.""
Daniel turned toward her.
"Nobody asked you.""
Victor finally exhaled.
"Vanessa told me to remove the recording from the public incident queue.""
My father stepped forward.
"Why?""
Victor looked miserable.
"She said it was a private personnel matter.""
"Did she ask you to delete it?""
"She said to make sure nobody could access it until she approved the release.""
Daniel frowned.
"That's not the same thing.""
"I know.""
"Then why did you do it?""
Victor looked down.
"I've worked here for nine years. I have two children. I didn't want to lose my job.""
I felt my chest tighten.
Another person.
Another employee who had chosen silence because he was afraid.
My father remained quiet for a moment.
Then he said, "Do you have a copy?""
Victor's eyes flickered.
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
"He doesn't!""
Victor looked at her.
Then he slowly reached into his pocket.
"I made a backup.""
Vanessa went completely still.
Victor removed a small encrypted storage device.
"I didn't know what would happen. I thought the footage might be needed later.""
Daniel took it carefully.
"Is this the complete recording?""
"Yes.""
"From the entrance cameras?""
"All angles.""
My father nodded.
"Thank you.""
Victor's shoulders relaxed slightly.
"Am I in trouble?""
My father looked at him.
"That's going to depend on what the investigation finds. But preserving evidence was the right thing to do.""
Victor nodded.
Then he added something that made the room uncomfortable.
"There's another recording.""
Daniel looked up.
"What recording?""
Victor glanced toward Vanessa.
"Audio from the security office.""
Vanessa's face changed.
"Victor, don't.""
He continued.
"She came into the security room after Miss Carter arrived. She spoke with me before the incident.""
My father's eyes narrowed.
"What did she say?""
Victor took a breath.
"She said the woman with the baby wasn't supposed to be allowed into the private dining room. She told me to watch her and make sure she didn't get past the entrance.""
I stared at Vanessa.
"Why?""
She shook her head.
"I was protecting the restaurant.""
Victor continued.
"She also said that if Mr. Carter arrived, we should contact her before letting him into the private room.""
My father slowly turned.
"Why would you need to control my access?""
Vanessa looked at him.
"I didn't know who you were.""
"Exactly.""
Daniel connected the storage device to his tablet.
A few seconds later, a video appeared.
The first angle showed me entering the restaurant.
My beige sweater.
My brown diaper bag.
Grace wrapped in white.
I watched myself approach the reception desk.
I watched Olivia check the reservation.
I watched Vanessa approach.
And then I watched the entire confrontation unfold.
The video had no sound at first.
Daniel adjusted the playback settings.
The audio returned.
My own voice sounded small.
"I'm here to meet my father. Richard Carter.""
Then Vanessa's voice.
"Well, this is an adult dining environment.""
The video continued.
The camera captured everything.
My repeated requests to verify the reservation.
Brett checking the confirmation.
Vanessa taking my phone.
My attempt to remain calm.
Then the slap.
I closed my eyes.
My father immediately placed a hand on my shoulder.
"Do you want me to stop it?""
I shook my head.
"No. Let it play.""
I needed to see it.
Not because I wanted to relive it.
Because I wanted everyone to stop pretending it hadn't happened.
The video showed me falling.
It showed me protecting Grace.
It showed the bottle rolling across the floor.
And it showed Vanessa standing over me.
Then came the worst part.
The laughter.
The guests.
The employees.
Nobody helped.
When the video ended, nobody spoke.
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
"Would you like to explain this?""
She stared at the tablet.
Her lips trembled.
"She was refusing to leave.""
Daniel's expression hardened.
"That does not justify assault.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"You don't understand. I was under pressure.""
I stared at her.
"From whom?""
She hesitated.
"Corporate.""
My father looked at Daniel.
"Corporate?""
Daniel shook his head.
"Nobody instructed her to remove families or assault customers.""
Vanessa quickly changed direction.
"I was trying to meet performance targets.""
Daniel scrolled through another document.
"Which targets?""
She didn't answer.
He read from the report.
"Customer retention. Private dining revenue. Premium guest satisfaction.""
Vanessa nodded.
"Exactly.""
Daniel continued.
"Your quarterly performance reports show that you exceeded the revenue target.""
Vanessa lifted her chin.
"Yes.""
"But the reports don't include the number of complaints you received.""
She went silent.
Daniel opened another spreadsheet.
"Twenty-seven formal complaints over eight months. Eleven involved families. Six involved customers whose reservations were valid but who were refused entry. Four involved employees who reported discriminatory instructions.""
My father looked at Vanessa.
"Did you know about these complaints?""
She didn't answer.
Daniel closed the spreadsheet.
"Your bonus calculations were based on the revenue reports you submitted. If these complaints were deliberately excluded, the company will need to review whether those reports were accurate.""
Vanessa's confidence began to collapse.
"That isn't fair.""
Daniel replied.
"Fairness was something you should have considered before you decided who deserved to sit at a table.""
My phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
*Danielle, please don't trust everyone in that room. Your father doesn't know what happened last year. Ask him about the original Sterling Room acquisition.*
I stared at the screen.
The message had no name.
I read it again.
My father noticed my expression.
"What is it?""
I handed him the phone.
He read the message.
For the first time that evening, he looked genuinely unsettled.
"Where did this come from?""
"I don't know.""
Daniel leaned over.
"May I see?""
He read it and frowned.
"That doesn't make sense.""
My father handed the phone back.
"Probably someone trying to distract us.""
But I knew my father.
I knew the small signs.
The way his fingers tightened around the phone.
The way his eyes briefly moved toward Daniel.
Something about that message had disturbed him.
"What's the original Sterling Room acquisition?"" I asked.
My father didn't answer immediately.
"Danielle, it's a complicated business matter.""
I stared at him.
"Dad, someone just sent me a message telling me you don't know what happened last year.""
He exhaled.
"I know what happened last year.""
"Then why won't you tell me?""
He looked toward Daniel.
Daniel slowly closed the folder.
Vanessa was watching us now.
And for the first time since my father arrived, she looked almost relieved.
My father finally spoke.
"Because the person who originally owned this restaurant disappeared before the sale was completed.""
I frowned.
"What does that have to do with me?""
He looked directly into my eyes.
"Everything.""
Before I could ask another question, the unknown number sent a second message.
This time, there was an attachment.
It was a photograph of an old ownership document.
At the bottom was a signature I recognized immediately.
My husband's.
Marcus Carter.
My breath caught.
May you like
Marcus had been dead for nearly seven weeks.
And somehow, his name was on a document connected to the restaurant where I had just been assaulted.
