Chapter 2: The Name Behind the Museum

My father's name was James Brooks.

To the people who knew him personally, he was a quiet man who preferred black coffee, old jazz records, and Sunday dinners with his family.

To the business world, he was something else entirely.

He was the founder of Brooks Capital Group, a private investment company with interests in real estate, technology, healthcare, and international development.

His photograph had appeared on the covers of business magazines.

He had negotiated deals with governors, CEOs, and international investors.

And three years earlier, he had donated $85 million toward the construction and expansion of the Whitmore Museum of Contemporary Art.

The museum's newest wing carried the name:

*THE JAMES A. BROOKS WING.*

My father had never insisted on having his name displayed prominently.

In fact, he had initially resisted the idea.

But the museum's board had argued that his donation would fund educational programs, community exhibitions, and scholarships for young artists.

Eventually, he agreed.

That evening, he had planned to announce another major commitment.

He intended to establish a permanent foundation supporting young Black artists and mothers returning to professional careers after childbirth.

He had asked me to attend because he wanted me to become the foundation's director.

I hadn't even told my husband about the offer yet.

Now I was sitting on a marble bench with a newborn in my arms, staring at the man who had just slapped my face.

Vanessa was trying to recover.

“Mr. Brooks,” she said, suddenly changing her tone.

“I'm terribly sorry for the confusion.””

My father didn't respond.

He was still looking at my cheek.

“Danielle, did she hit you?””

I nodded.

His jaw tightened.

“Did she?””

“Yes, Dad.””

He turned toward Vanessa.

“Did you strike my daughter?””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“Sir, I think there's been a misunderstanding.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Richard stepped forward.

“Mr. Brooks, we were simply enforcing the event's access policy.””

My father finally looked at him.

“And you are?””

“Richard Hale. Assistant event manager.””

“Did you witness what happened?””

Richard hesitated.

“I saw a disagreement.””

My father stared at him.

“A disagreement?””

Vanessa jumped in.

“The woman entered without presenting an invitation. She became aggressive, disrupted our guests, and refused to leave when asked.””

I couldn't believe it.

I looked at my father.

“Dad, that's not what happened.””

“I know, sweetheart.””

Vanessa blinked.

“You know?””

My father ignored her.

He reached for the white blanket covering Noah and gently adjusted it.

“Is he hungry?””

“A little.””

“Then let's get you somewhere comfortable.””

He turned toward his attorney.

“Eleanor, please arrange a private room for my daughter and grandson.””

Eleanor Price, his longtime general counsel, nodded.

“Of course.””

Vanessa moved into his path.

“Mr. Brooks, before you make any decisions, I would appreciate the opportunity to explain our security procedures.””

My father stopped.

“Move.””

She blinked.

“Excuse me?””

“I said move.””

Something in his voice made her step aside.

He helped me stand.

My legs were stiff from sitting on the marble floor, and he placed a protective hand behind my back.

As we walked toward the private reception corridor, I heard a woman whisper:

“Wait. That's James Brooks?””

Another guest answered:

“The benefactor?””

A third person said:

“Isn't this his museum?””

Vanessa's face turned crimson.

“Mr. Brooks!”” she called.

My father continued walking.

Richard hurried after us.

“Sir, we have a scheduled program. The board is expecting you.””

My father stopped again.

“Then the board can wait.””

He looked at Eleanor.

“Get the chairman on the phone.””

“Already calling him,” she replied.

Vanessa followed.

“Mr. Brooks, I really think you're overreacting. Your daughter was not on the guest list.””

My father turned slowly.

“Did you ask her name?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

“She told us.””

“And what did you do?””

“I checked the list.””

“Did you call the person responsible for your guest list?””

“No, but—”

“Did you contact my office?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“No.””

“Did you ask the chairman whether my family was expected?””

Her lips tightened.

“No.””

My father nodded.

“So you made a decision based on her clothing, her appearance, and the fact that she was carrying a child.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“That's not fair.””

He looked toward Richard.

“Did you tell security to remove her?””

Richard looked uncomfortable.

“I was following instructions.””

“Whose instructions?””

Richard glanced at Vanessa.

My father noticed.

“Interesting.””

We entered a private lounge.

It had cream-colored walls, a marble fireplace, and comfortable leather chairs. A catering assistant hurried in with bottled water.

My father asked for a bottle of warm water and a clean towel.

Then he sat beside me.

“Let me see your face.””

I turned slightly.

He examined the red mark across my cheek.

His eyes became wet for a moment, but he quickly looked away.

“I should have been here.””

“Dad, you couldn't have known.””

“I told you someone would meet you.””

“I know.””

“I should have made sure.””

I placed my free hand over his.

“I'm okay.””

He looked at Noah.

“Your grandson doesn't look okay.””

Noah had finally stopped crying, but his little face was still scrunched up.

My father smiled faintly.

“That's my boy.””

I laughed despite myself.

Then Eleanor entered.

“James, the chairman is on his way.””

“Good.””

She glanced at my cheek.

“Danielle, would you like medical attention?””

“I'm fine.””

“I'm going to document the injury anyway,” she said.

“We should also preserve the security footage.””

My father nodded.

“Every camera in that lobby. Every angle. I want the original files preserved.””

Eleanor opened her portfolio.

“I'll send a preservation notice immediately.””

I looked at her.

“Dad, I don't want anyone fired just because I'm your daughter.””

He turned toward me.

“I'm not going to punish people for making a mistake.””

Then he paused.

“But I will not protect anyone who abuses their authority, lies about it, or treats another human being as disposable.””

A knock interrupted us.

The museum chairman entered.

Dr. Charles Whitaker was a distinguished man in his sixties who had worked with my father for years.

His smile disappeared when he saw me.

“Danielle? What happened?””

My father stood.

“Charles, I need you to explain something.””

“Of course.””

“Why was my daughter assaulted in this building?””

Charles looked confused.

“Assaulted?””

“Vanessa Whitmore slapped her.””

Charles's face changed.

“Vanessa?””

“Yes.””

“I'm sure there's been some misunderstanding.””

My father gave him a cold look.

“That's exactly what she said.””

Charles adjusted his glasses.

“Perhaps we should discuss this privately.””

“No. We should discuss it honestly.””

The chairman looked toward me.

“Danielle, I'm sorry if you experienced an unpleasant interaction.””

My father immediately interrupted.

“An unpleasant interaction?””

Charles sighed.

“James, I'm trying to keep this situation from escalating.””

I stared at him.

I had expected concern.

Instead, he seemed worried about the gala.

My father leaned forward.

“Charles, my daughter has a visible injury on her face. Her newborn was in her arms when it happened. Your event manager struck her in front of dozens of witnesses.””

Charles swallowed.

“I understand.””

“Do you?””

“Yes.””

“Then I have one question.””

My father placed both hands on the back of the chair.

“Who authorized Vanessa Whitmore to decide which members of my family were welcome in a building I helped finance?””

Charles looked down.

“Nobody, obviously.””

“Then why are you defending her?””

The chairman didn't answer.

Eleanor's phone vibrated.

She checked the screen and frowned.

“James.””

“What is it?””

“Security has sent a preliminary report.””

“And?””

She looked at Charles.

“There's something else.””

My father turned toward her.

“What?””

Eleanor lowered her voice.

“The event manager didn't simply remove Danielle from the guest list.””

She opened a document on her tablet.

“She personally instructed the registration team to flag the Brooks family reservation.””

I stared at her.

“Why would she do that?””

Eleanor scrolled further.

Then she stopped.

“Because somebody specifically requested that Danielle Brooks not be admitted tonight.””

My father went completely still.

“Who?””

Eleanor looked up.

“The request came from the chairman's office.””

Charles's face drained of color.

And suddenly, my father's anger wasn't directed only at Vanessa.

It was directed at the man standing in front of us.
