Chapter 4: The Betrayal Behind the Smile

My father didn't say anything for almost a full minute.

He simply stared at the frozen image on Eleanor's tablet.

His younger brother, Robert Brooks, stood beside Vanessa Whitmore, holding a folded piece of paper and smiling as if they were discussing the evening's entertainment.

I knew that smile.

I had seen it at Thanksgiving dinners.

At birthday parties.

At my wedding.

And two weeks earlier, when Robert had stood beside my hospital bed and told me that Noah was the most beautiful baby he'd ever seen.

Now I was looking at the same man who had apparently helped arrange my humiliation.

“Play it again,” my father said.

Eleanor pressed the screen.

The footage resumed.

Robert handed Vanessa the paper. She read it, looked toward the entrance, and nodded.

Then Robert pointed toward the stage.

Vanessa said something.

Robert laughed.

My father watched without blinking.

“Can you isolate their conversation?”” he asked.

“The original camera doesn't have audio,” Eleanor replied.

“But the museum's reception cameras might.””

“Get them.””

Eleanor immediately called the security director.

I adjusted Noah's blanket.

“Dad?””

He turned.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Why would Uncle Robert do this?””

My father pulled out the chair beside me.

“Your uncle and I haven't agreed on everything for a long time.””

“About the foundation?””

“About much more than that.””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Robert believes that because we're brothers, everything I've built should eventually belong to him.””

I frowned.

“But he has his own investments.””

“He does. And I've helped him more times than I can count.””

“Then what does he want?””

My father looked at me.

“Control.””

That single word seemed to explain everything.

Eleanor returned from the hallway.

“James, I've confirmed that Robert is still in the building.””

My father stood.

“Where?””

“Near the east gallery. He's speaking with several trustees.””

“Bring him here.””

Eleanor hesitated.

“Would you prefer that I have security accompany him?””

“No. Let him walk in by himself.””

I looked toward the door.

“Dad, I don't want to see him.””

My father immediately softened.

“You don't have to.””

“But I need to know why.””

He sat beside me again.

“Then you'll know. But nobody is going to force you into a confrontation.””

A few minutes later, someone knocked.

Robert entered without waiting for an invitation.

He was wearing an expensive navy tuxedo, a white pocket square, and a gold watch I recognized from his sixtieth birthday celebration.

He smiled when he saw my father.

“James. There you are. The chairman has been looking everywhere for you.””

Then he noticed me.

His smile faltered.

“Danielle?””

He looked at my cheek.

“What happened?””

I stared at him.

He approached with his arms slightly open.

“Sweetheart, are you okay?””

I didn't move.

He stopped.

“What's wrong?””

My father stood between us.

“Robert, sit down.””

Robert glanced at Eleanor.

“What's this about?””

“Sit.””

Something in my father's voice made him obey.

Robert lowered himself into the chair.

My father placed the tablet on the table.

“Do you recognize this?””

Robert glanced at the screen.

His face changed for half a second.

Then he smiled.

“That's the gala footage.””

“Correct.””

“Why are you showing me this?””

My father pressed play.

Robert watched himself approach Vanessa.

He watched the exchange.

Then he leaned back.

“James, I can explain.””

“Excellent. Explain.””

Robert crossed one leg over the other.

“Vanessa was concerned about an access issue. I was helping her manage the guest list.””

“Why?””

“Because the board had concerns about Danielle's appearance at the announcement.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“My appearance?””

Robert looked toward me.

“Danielle, this isn't personal.””

I almost laughed.

“You helped them keep me out of a museum that carries Dad's name. You watched a woman slap me while I was holding my newborn. And you think this isn't personal?””

Robert sighed.

“You're emotional. I understand.””

My father slammed his palm onto the table.

“Don't.””

Robert looked startled.

“James—”

“Do not speak to my daughter as if she's a child.””

Robert straightened his jacket.

“Fine. Let's discuss the actual issue.””

He turned toward my father.

“You're making a serious mistake with this foundation.””

My father folded his arms.

“Go on.””

“You want to appoint Danielle as director. You want to announce a new funding structure. You want to place another substantial portion of your wealth into a nonprofit organization.””

“Yes.””

“And you expect the shareholders to simply accept that?””

My father stared at him.

“Why would shareholders have a say in my personal charitable contributions?””

Robert's expression tightened.

“Because your decisions affect the entire Brooks organization.””

“That's not what the agreement says.””

Robert leaned forward.

“James, we both know the succession plan.””

My father didn't respond.

Robert continued.

“Your voting rights transfer according to the family governance agreement. You cannot make unilateral decisions that affect the long-term structure without consulting the executive committee.””

Eleanor opened her portfolio.

“That's an interesting interpretation.””

Robert glanced at her.

“I wasn't speaking to you.””

“You're discussing a legal agreement,” Eleanor replied.

“So you should probably expect legal counsel to participate.””

My father looked at his brother.

“Is that why you came here tonight?””

Robert spread his hands.

“I came to support the museum.””

“By arranging for my daughter to be denied entry?””

“I didn't arrange anything.””

Eleanor turned the tablet toward him.

“Then perhaps you'd like to explain this message.””

Robert looked down.

The message was displayed clearly.

Make sure Danielle never reaches the stage tonight. If James announces the foundation appointment, everything we've worked for falls apart.

Robert's jaw tightened.

“That message is incomplete.””

“Then provide the rest,” Eleanor said.

He ignored her.

My father stared at him.

“What exactly have you been working toward?””

Robert stood.

“James, don't do this here.””

“Sit down.””

“I will not be interrogated like some criminal.””

My father stepped closer.

“You watched your niece get slapped.””

Robert's voice rose.

“I didn't know Vanessa was going to hit her!””

“You knew she was going to stop her from entering.””

Robert said nothing.

“And you knew she was holding a baby.””

“I thought security would handle it.””

My father shook his head.

“That's your defense?””

Robert looked at me.

“Danielle, please. You know how things work in this family. Your father makes decisions without considering how they affect anyone else.””

I stared at him.

“You could have called me.””

He blinked.

“What?””

“You could have called me and told me there was a problem. You could have explained the board's concerns. You could have asked me to wait outside. Instead, you arranged for me to be humiliated.””

Robert sighed.

“You wouldn't have understood.””

“I'm thirty-two years old.””

“You're still James's daughter.””

“And you're still his brother. Apparently, neither fact stopped you.””

For the first time, Robert looked genuinely angry.

“Watch your mouth.””

My father stepped forward.

“Enough.””

He turned to Eleanor.

“Send Robert the legal notice.””

Robert frowned.

“What notice?””

Eleanor removed a sealed envelope from her portfolio.

“Effective immediately, all access to confidential Brooks Capital Group succession documents and pending transaction records is suspended pending an independent review.””

Robert stared at her.

“You cannot do that.””

“Your brother can,” she replied.

“And he just did.””

Robert snatched the envelope.

“This is outrageous.””

My father remained calm.

“You should have thought about that before using my family as pieces in your game.””

Robert looked at him for a long moment.

Then he leaned closer.

“You think you've won something tonight?””

My father didn't move.

Robert smiled bitterly.

“You're about to discover that the foundation isn't your biggest problem.””

He turned toward the door.

Before leaving, he looked directly at me.

“Enjoy your little victory, Danielle.””

Then he walked out.

I watched the door close.

My father remained standing.

“Dad,” I whispered.

He turned.

“What is it?””

“What did he mean?””

Eleanor looked down at her tablet.

A new notification had appeared.

She opened it.

Then she slowly raised her eyes.

“James, there's been an emergency filing.””

“What kind?””

She swallowed.

“Robert has requested an extraordinary shareholder vote.””

My father frowned.

“When?””

Eleanor checked the document.

“Tonight. During the gala.””

I stared at her.

“Tonight?””

She nodded.

“And he's claiming that you are no longer capable of independently managing the company's voting interests.””

My father became very still.

Then Eleanor added one more detail.

“The petition is supported by three members of the executive committee.””

My father's eyes narrowed.

“Who are they?””

Eleanor turned the screen around.

The first name was Robert Brooks.

The second was Charles Whitaker.

The third was a name I recognized from my father's private office.

His personal financial adviser.

*Martin Cole.*

And suddenly, I understood.

This wasn't an argument between two brothers.

May you like

It was an organized attempt to take my father's company away from him.

And they had chosen the night he planned to announce my appointment to strike.
