Chapter 9: The Child My Father Never Told Me About

Nobody spoke.

The recording ended.

My father stared at the laptop as if the screen had just revealed something he had spent his entire life trying to forget.

I looked at him.

“Dad?””

He didn't answer.

“Dad, what did Mom mean?””

He slowly sat down.

His hands were trembling.

Eleanor stepped closer.

“James, is there something we should know?””

My father looked toward the gallery doors.

Then at the letter.

Then at me.

Finally, he whispered:

“Your mother wasn't talking about a biological son.””

I frowned.

“What?””

He took a breath.

“Before you were born, Margaret and I helped raise a young boy.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

“His name was Daniel.””

My heart began to pound.

My father rubbed his forehead.

“He was the son of a close family friend. His mother died when he was very young. His father was struggling with addiction, and the boy had nowhere stable to live.””

“What happened to him?””

“We took him in.””

I looked at the photograph of my mother.

“Why didn't I know?””

“You were very young. He lived with us for almost two years.””

My father paused.

“Then his father returned. He had completed treatment and wanted to raise his son.””

“So Daniel left?””

My father nodded.

“We stayed in touch for a while.””

I tried to remember.

A boy in our house.

A boy playing with my toys.

A boy sitting beside my mother at the kitchen table.

Nothing came.

“Was he older than me?””

“About five years.””

“Then why did Mom call him your son?””

My father looked toward the empty stage.

“Because she loved him like one.””

The words made something inside me ache.

My mother had loved a child who wasn't hers.

That was exactly the kind of woman she had been.

But there was still something I didn't understand.

“Why would he be involved in this?””

My father didn't answer.

Martin stepped forward.

“Because Daniel was named in the original foundation documents.””

Eleanor turned toward him.

“Named how?””

Martin opened another file.

“Margaret created a protected beneficiary arrangement. It was designed to support children who had experienced family instability, including Daniel.””

My father nodded slowly.

“He was the first child she wanted the initiative to help.””

Olivia studied the records.

“Then why is the account almost empty?””

Martin looked down.

“Because the foundation was transferred into a different administrative structure after Margaret died.””

“Who authorized the transfer?”” Eleanor asked.

Martin hesitated.

“James did.””

My father looked at him sharply.

“I never authorized it.””

Martin shook his head.

“Your signature is on the original transfer instruction.””

My father took the document.

He examined it.

Then he looked at Eleanor.

“That isn't my signature.””

Eleanor studied it carefully.

“I agree.””

Robert suddenly laughed.

“Here we go again.””

My father turned toward him.

“Do you know where Daniel is?””

Robert's smile disappeared.

“Why would I know?””

“You knew about the foundation.””

“I knew about the original arrangement.””

“Did you ever meet him?””

Robert hesitated.

“Once or twice.””

“Where is he?””

“I have no idea.””

Martin quietly interrupted.

“That's not true.””

Everyone turned.

Robert stared at him.

“What?””

Martin removed another sheet from his briefcase.

“Daniel Cole.””

My father frowned.

“Cole?””

Martin nodded.

“His name was legally changed after he was adopted by another family.””

I looked at him.

“Adopted?””

“After his father died, a family friend became his legal guardian. Eventually, the adoption was finalized.””

My father leaned forward.

“Who adopted him?””

Martin hesitated.

Then he said:

“Charles Whitaker.””

The gallery erupted.

Charles immediately shook his head.

“This is nonsense.””

Martin continued.

“Daniel was adopted by Charles's older sister, who later passed away. Charles became his guardian.””

I looked toward Charles.

“You knew my mother's foundation was supposed to help him?””

Charles didn't answer.

My father stood.

“Charles?””

Charles looked at him.

“I was trying to protect Daniel.””

“From what?””

“From this family.””

My father stared at him.

“You stole the foundation money to protect a child?””

Charles shook his head.

“You don't understand.””

“Then explain.””

Charles looked around.

His eyes moved toward the audience, the cameras, and the security officers.

Then he spoke.

“Daniel discovered the original financial irregularities.””

Martin closed his eyes.

Charles continued.

“He found documents showing that someone had been moving money through the trust. He threatened to expose everything.””

My father stepped forward.

“And you stopped him?””

“I tried to keep him safe.””

“By stealing the money?””

Charles raised his voice.

“By keeping him away from people who would destroy him!””

My father stared at him.

“Who?””

Charles looked toward Robert.

Then toward Martin.

Finally, he looked at me.

“Your uncle.””

Robert immediately exploded.

“Don't you dare put this on me!””

Charles pointed at him.

“You recruited Daniel.””

Robert shook his head.

“He was already involved.””

“You offered him money!””

“I offered him an opportunity.””

“You told him he could take control of the trust!””

Robert stepped forward.

“Enough!””

Security moved between them.

I looked at my father.

“Dad, what's happening?””

He shook his head.

“I don't know yet.””

Martin opened another file.

“There's something we haven't discussed.””

Eleanor sighed.

“Martin, please tell me this isn't another missing document.””

Martin gave a faint, humorless smile.

“It's a recorded statement.””

He placed a small digital recorder on the table.

“Margaret asked me to preserve it.””

My father looked at the device.

“Why didn't you give this to me years ago?””

Martin's eyes filled.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of whom?””

Martin looked toward Charles.

“Of the person who had already threatened Margaret.””

My father went completely still.

“Who threatened my wife?””

Martin pressed play.

There was a brief hiss.

Then my mother's voice.

“If you're hearing this, Martin, please understand that I didn't make this recording because I wanted to accuse anyone.””

A pause.

“I made it because I know what they are capable of.””

Another pause.

“James believes Robert is the biggest problem. But Robert is only the person everyone can see.””

My father closed his eyes.

My mother's voice continued.

“The person behind this has been using Daniel's circumstances to create a false beneficiary claim.””

Martin glanced at my father.

My mother's voice became quieter.

“James, I need you to listen carefully. Daniel isn't the danger.””

A brief crackle.

“The danger is the person who convinced him that our family abandoned him.””

My father looked toward Charles.

Charles was staring at the floor.

The recording continued.

“If Daniel comes back, don't punish him. Find out who sent him.””

Then came the final sentence.

“Because the person who sent him is the same person who has been pretending to protect our family.””

The recording stopped.

I looked around the gallery.

Robert was breathing heavily.

Charles looked terrified.

Martin was crying.

And my father seemed to have aged ten years in a single evening.

“Who sent Daniel?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

Then Olivia's phone rang.

She glanced at the screen.

“It's an unknown number.””

Eleanor motioned for her to answer on speaker.

Olivia accepted the call.

“Hello?””

A young man's voice came through.

“Is James Brooks there?””

My father stepped closer.

“This is James.””

“My name is Daniel Cole.””

My father closed his eyes.

“Daniel?””

“Yes, sir.””

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Daniel continued.

“I know you're at the museum. I've been watching the broadcast.””

My father swallowed.

“Where are you?””

“Outside.””

Security looked toward the entrance.

Daniel's voice became strained.

“Mr. Brooks, I need you to listen to me. I didn't know what Robert was planning.””

Robert shouted from across the gallery.

“Don't listen to him!””

Daniel heard him.

His voice changed.

“Is Robert there?””

“Yes.””

“Then don't let him leave.””

My father looked toward the security officers.

“Why?””

Daniel took a shaky breath.

“Because I have the original documents.””

Eleanor stepped closer to the phone.

“Which documents?””

“The trust amendment. The missing foundation records. And the original authorization for the six-million-dollar transfer.””

Martin looked stunned.

“Daniel, where did you get those?””

“I took copies before they destroyed the archive.””

My father gripped the table.

“Who is they?””

Daniel was silent.

Then he said:

“I can tell you, but I need to know something first.””

“What?””

“Does Danielle have Noah with her?””

I looked down at my son.

“Yes,” I said, leaning toward the phone.

Daniel paused.

“Then keep him away from the stage.””

My stomach tightened.

“Why?””

“Because the person who signed the original transfer documents has been asking questions about Noah.””

I felt my blood turn cold.

My father immediately moved closer.

“What questions?””

Daniel's voice cracked.

“About the inheritance.””

I looked at my father.

“What inheritance?””

He didn't answer.

Daniel continued.

“Margaret created a protected family trust. When Danielle became a mother, a new beneficiary provision was supposed to activate.””

Eleanor's eyes widened.

“That's what the letter referred to.””

Daniel nodded through the phone.

“Exactly.””

My father frowned.

“Why would anyone care about Noah?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he said:

“Because the trust doesn't just protect Danielle's inheritance.””

He took a breath.

“It gives Noah a controlling interest in the family foundation once he reaches adulthood.””

My father stared at the phone.

I looked at my newborn.

Noah was sleeping peacefully, unaware that his name had just become the center of a financial conspiracy.

Daniel continued.

“Someone has been trying to eliminate that provision for years.””

“Who?”” my father demanded.

Before Daniel could answer, the call suddenly disconnected.

Olivia looked at her screen.

“It's gone.””

My father immediately turned toward security.

“Find him.””

Two guards hurried toward the entrance.

Then the enormous gallery doors opened.

A young man entered.

He was tall, wearing a dark jacket and carrying a black backpack.

His eyes moved across the room.

They stopped on my father.

“Mr. Brooks?””

My father stepped forward.

“Daniel?””

The young man nodded.

Then he looked at me.

For several seconds, he simply stared.

Finally, he said something that made my father take an unsteady step backward.

“Danielle, your mother didn't just leave you an inheritance.””

He opened his backpack.

“She left you proof that someone in this room tried to have her killed.””

The gallery went silent.

And before anyone could ask another question, Daniel placed a small medical report on the table.

At the top was my mother's name.

Beneath it was the date of her death.

And in the corner was a handwritten note:

*Original cause of death disputed.*

My father stared at the paper.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“Who wrote this?””

Daniel slowly raised his eyes.

“Your brother Robert knows.””

May you like

Robert's face turned white.

And for the first time that night, he stopped pretending he had nothing to hide.
