Chapter 1: The Camera That Wasn’t Supposed to Record
“Don’t worry, honey. It’s only a two-week trip. You’ll barely notice I’m gone.””
Those were the last words my dad said before he kissed my mom goodbye at the front door.
He smiled like everything in our house was still perfect.
Like our family photo hanging above the fireplace wasn’t already hiding a crack nobody wanted to admit existed.
I watched him carry his suitcase down the driveway that morning, waving through the car window until his silver sedan disappeared around the corner.
My mom stood beside me, holding her coffee cup with both hands.
For a few seconds, she looked sad.
Almost lonely.
I thought I understood what I was seeing.
I thought my mother missed my father.
I thought our home was safe.
I was wrong.
My name is Emily Carter, and I was seventeen years old when I discovered the truth about my parents’ marriage.
The truth didn’t come from a confession.
It didn’t come from a stranger.
It came from a security camera my mother thought she had destroyed.
Our family had cameras installed after someone broke into our neighborhood the year before. My dad was always traveling for business, so he wanted everyone to feel protected.
“Technology gives me peace of mind,” he used to say.
Mom hated the cameras.
“They make the house feel like a prison,” she complained.
Dad would laugh.
“They’re just there in case something happens.””
Neither of them knew that one day, something would happen because of those cameras.
That afternoon, I was upstairs in my room when I heard a strange sound from downstairs.
The front door opening.
A man’s voice.
Not my dad’s.
I froze.
At first, I convinced myself I was imagining things.
Maybe Mom had invited a neighbor over.
Maybe one of Dad’s friends stopped by.
Maybe there was some innocent explanation.
Then I heard my mother laugh.
It wasn’t the polite laugh she used with strangers.
It was the laugh I hadn’t heard in years.
The kind she used when Dad and I would dance around the kitchen on Sunday mornings.
I slowly walked toward the stairs.
I didn’t go all the way down.
I just looked through the railing.
And that was when I saw him.
A tall man standing in our living room.
My mother was standing close to him.
Too close.
Her hand was resting on his arm.
The man leaned down and whispered something.
Mom smiled.
Then she kissed him.
My entire body went cold.
I grabbed the railing because my knees suddenly felt weak.
For a moment, my brain refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.
My mother.
My father’s wife.
Kissing another man in our home.
The same home where my dad had hugged her goodbye that morning.
The same home where he had told her he loved her.
I backed away quietly.
I didn’t cry.
I didn’t scream.
I just went back upstairs and closed my bedroom door.
Because something inside me knew this was bigger than a kiss.
There was something else.
Something my mother didn’t want anyone to see.
I sat on my bed, staring at the small security camera notification on my phone.
The cameras were connected to my dad’s account.
Usually, he checked them when he traveled.
I opened the app.
The camera feed from the living room was missing.
A black screen replaced the image.
My heart started beating faster.
I checked the other cameras.
The backyard.
The hallway.
The garage.
All working.
Only the living room camera was disconnected.
Someone had unplugged it.
Someone had wanted privacy.
I walked downstairs slowly after the man left.
My mother was in the kitchen, humming while washing a glass.
She looked completely calm.
Too calm.
“Mom?”” I asked.
She turned around.
“What?””
I looked toward the empty living room.
“Did you unplug the camera?””
Her hand stopped moving.
Only for a second.
But I noticed.
“What camera?”” she asked.
The way she said it told me everything.
She wasn’t confused.
She was pretending.
“The living room camera,” I replied.
“The one Dad installed.””
Mom dried her hands with a towel.
“Emily, your father worries too much. Sometimes those cameras malfunction.””
I stared at her.
“Really? Because it seems strange that only one stopped working today.””
Her expression changed.
Not guilt.
Annoyance.
“Why are you questioning me?””
“Because Dad trusts you.””
The words came out before I could stop them.
The kitchen suddenly felt silent.
Mom looked away.
Then she smiled softly.
A fake smile.
“Go do your homework, Emily.””
I didn’t move.
Something inside me had changed.
The woman standing in front of me was my mother.
But for the first time in my life, I felt like I didn’t know her.
That night, after everyone went to sleep, I walked downstairs.
The house was completely dark.
I found the unplugged camera behind the television.
My hands shook as I plugged it back in.
The small red light turned on.
Recording.
I whispered to myself.
“Let’s see what you were trying to hide.””
I didn’t know then that I had just made the decision that would destroy my family.
Because only three hours later, someone would appear on that footage.

And when my father saw his face…
Everything would change.
