Chapter 7: The Brother Who Came Back

My father’s hand hovered over the doorknob.

Nobody breathed.

Nobody moved.

The entire house felt like it was waiting for an explosion.

Then my father stepped back.

He looked at Daniel.

“Who is outside?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Dad’s eyes narrowed.

“You know.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Daniel took a slow breath.

“Michael.””

My father’s face changed.

I had seen fear on his face before.

When he watched the footage.

When he opened the folder.

But this was different.

This was something older.

Something deeper.

“You’re sure?””

Daniel nodded.

“He found me before I found you.””

The doorbell rang again.

This time, harder.

Mom whispered:

“He knows we’re here.””

Dad looked at her.

“How?””

She looked away.

And that was all the answer we needed.

Dad opened the door.

Standing outside was a man around my father’s age.

Gray hair.

Expensive suit.

A calm expression.

Too calm.

“Hello, John.””

My father stared at him.

“Michael.””

The man smiled.

“I was wondering how long it would take.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Michael looked past my father.

His eyes landed on Daniel.

A small smile appeared.

“So you came back too.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You knew.””

Michael laughed.

“Of course I knew.””

My father’s face hardened.

“What do you want?””

Michael looked around the house.

“The same thing I wanted years ago.””

“Revenge?””

Michael smiled.

“No.””

He stepped inside.

“Justice.””

Dad’s hands curled into fists.

“You don’t get to use that word.””

Michael looked at him.

“You stole it from me first.””

The tension was unbearable.

I had never seen my father this powerless.

Not because Michael was stronger.

Because Michael knew things.

Things nobody else knew.

Michael placed a briefcase on the table.

“I came here to make a deal.””

Dad didn’t move.

“I’m not interested.””

“You will be.””

Michael opened the case.

Inside were documents.

More documents.

It felt like every secret in our family had been printed on paper.

“What is that?”” Mom asked.

Michael looked at her.

“Your future.””

Her face went pale.

“You lied to me.””

Michael smiled.

“No.””

He looked at my father.

“She lied to herself.””

Dad stepped forward.

“What did you tell her?””

“The truth.””

Michael looked around.

“She wanted to destroy you because she believed you deserved it.””

Mom looked angry.

“You manipulated me.””

Michael shrugged.

“I gave you what you wanted.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“You made me think I had control.””

Michael smiled.

“Didn’t you?””

The way he said it made my skin crawl.

Daniel grabbed the documents.

“What is your plan?””

Michael looked at him.

“My plan?””

He laughed.

“You two are still thinking too small.””

He looked at my father.

“John, do you really think I spent twenty years waiting just to hurt you?””

Dad stared.

“Then what?””

Michael leaned closer.

“To take back what belonged to me.””

Dad looked confused.

Michael pointed at the papers.

“The company.””

“That company was sold.””

“Not everything.””

Silence.

Michael looked at me.

“There is one thing your father never told you.””

I felt my chest tighten.

I was tired of those words.

Another secret.

Another hidden truth.

“What?””

Michael smiled.

“Your father didn’t just lose a brother.””

Dad’s face went pale.

“Michael.””

But he continued.

“He lost ownership because of a child.””

I looked at my father.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Michael stepped closer.

“Your father changed the company agreement before he betrayed Daniel.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What are you talking about?””

Michael opened another document.

“He transferred shares into a trust.””

Dad stared.

“No.””

Michael smiled.

“Yes.””

My father grabbed the paper.

His hands shook.

“No one was supposed to know about this.””

“Exactly.””

Michael looked at him.

“Because the trust belonged to Emily.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Everyone looked at me.

Dad looked devastated.

Michael smiled.

“The company your father built. The company Daniel helped create. The company everyone fought over…”

May you like

He pointed at me.

“…was always meant to become yours.””
