Chapter 6: The Plan Hidden Behind the Lie

The silence after my father’s question felt louder than any argument.

“Tell me I’m wrong.””

My mother stood frozen in the middle of the living room.

For the first time since this nightmare began, she didn’t look angry.

She didn’t look defensive.

She looked caught.

Dad slowly lowered the document.

“What did you sign?””

Mom looked away.

“John…”

“No.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“I spent years believing I was the only person in this house who made mistakes. I accepted what I did. I carried it. I admitted it.””

He held up the paper.

“But now I find out you were planning something behind my back?””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t understand.””

Dad laughed quietly.

“That’s what everyone keeps saying.””

Daniel stood near the doorway, watching everything unfold.

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he nodded.

“Yes.””

My stomach tightened.

“You knew she was planning something?””

Daniel looked at my mother.

“She contacted me months ago.””

Dad turned sharply.

“What?””

Mom closed her eyes.

Daniel continued.

“She found me after all these years.””

My father’s expression changed.

“Why?””

Mom finally spoke.

“Because I needed answers.””

“Answers?””

She nodded.

“About what happened between you and Daniel.””

Dad stared at her.

“You could have asked me.””

“I did.””

Her voice cracked.

“And you lied.””

The accusation hung between them.

I looked at my father.

He didn’t deny it.

Mom wiped her tears.

“You told me you made one mistake. One.””

She pointed at the folder.

“But it wasn’t one mistake, John. You destroyed someone’s entire life.””

My father looked down.

“I know.””

“No, you know now.””

Her voice became sharper.

“You knew after it was too late.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Everyone looked at him.

He looked exhausted.

“I didn’t come here to watch both of you tear each other apart.””

Dad looked at him.

“Then why are you here?””

Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.

“Because this isn’t about what happened twenty years ago.””

He placed the phone on the table.

“It’s about what’s happening now.””

He pressed play.

A recording began.

At first, there was only background noise.

Then my mother’s voice.

“I need the documents signed before he comes back.””

My entire body went cold.

Dad looked at Mom.

She looked away.

The recording continued.

“I don’t want him hurt,” Mom said.

A man’s voice answered.

“You don’t get to choose that anymore.””

I recognized the voice.

It wasn’t Daniel.

My heart started racing.

The man continued.

“Once the transfer happens, John Carter loses control of everything.””

Dad grabbed the phone.

“Who is that?””

Daniel looked serious.

“That’s the person you should have been worried about.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

“Who?”” my father asked.

Daniel looked at him.

“Your business partner.””

My father frowned.

“I don’t have a business partner.””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“You do.””

Dad looked confused.

“Who?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“Your brother.””

The room went silent.

I had never heard my father mention a brother.

Not once.

“What brother?”” I asked.

Dad didn’t respond.

Daniel looked at him.

“You never told her.””

My father’s face changed.

Because this was another secret.

Another hidden piece of his life.

“Emily,” he said softly.

I looked at him.

“I had a brother.””

“Why didn’t I know?””

He swallowed.

“Because he disappeared.””

“When?””

“Years ago.””

Daniel crossed his arms.

“Not disappeared.””

Dad looked at him.

“Daniel.””

“He left because of what your father did.””

I stared.

“My grandfather?””

Dad nodded slowly.

“My father.””

The room felt like it was getting smaller.

Every answer created another question.

Daniel picked up the folder.

“Your mother didn’t contact me because she wanted revenge.””

Dad looked at him.

“Then why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because she discovered your uncle was trying to take everything.””

Mom nodded.

“I found financial records. Transfers. Hidden accounts.””

Dad stared at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Her expression broke.

“Because I didn’t trust you.””

Those words hurt him more than anything else.

“You trusted Daniel instead?””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my father stood.

“Where is he?””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“Closer than you think.””

A sound interrupted us.

A car door closing outside.

Everyone froze.

Mom looked toward the front window.

“No.””

Dad noticed.

“Who is it?””

Nobody answered.

Then the doorbell rang.

Once.

Twice.

My father walked toward the entrance.

Daniel grabbed his arm.

“Don’t open that door.””

Dad looked at him.

“Why?””

Daniel whispered:

“Because if he’s here…”

May you like

The doorbell rang again.

“…he already knows everything.””
