Chapter 9: The Last Secret

The photograph sat on the table between us.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody wanted to.

Because everyone knew.

Whatever was hidden in that picture would change everything.

My father finally spoke.

“Where did you get this?””

Michael smiled.

“From the person who took it.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Is it?””

Dad stared at him.

“You know she’s dead.””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then who gave it to you?””

Michael didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at Daniel.

“Tell her.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

Michael smiled.

“You found out too.””

Daniel’s face changed.

I looked between them.

“What is happening?””

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

Then he sighed.

“There was someone else.””

My heart sank.

“Someone else?””

He nodded.

“Someone who knew the truth.””

My father sat down.

“I thought she was gone.””

Daniel looked at him.

“You never looked.””

The same words.

Again.

My father closed his eyes.

“Who?””

Daniel answered quietly.

“Your mother.””

I felt like the floor disappeared.

“My grandmother?””

Daniel nodded.

“She didn’t die when everyone thought she did.””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at my father.

“Dad?””

He looked broken.

“She left.””

“Why?””

He swallowed.

“Because she found out what I did.””

“What you did to Daniel?””

He nodded.

“And what she did?””

He looked at the photograph.

“She discovered my father’s secrets.””

I stared.

“My grandfather?””

“Yes.””

My father rubbed his face.

“Everyone thinks my father built his company through hard work.””

He laughed sadly.

“But he built it through manipulation.””

Michael smiled.

“Finally.””

Dad continued.

“He stole ideas. He ruined competitors. He destroyed people.””

“And you followed him,” Daniel said.

My father nodded.

“Yes.””

The admission was painful.

“But my mother found proof.””

“What proof?””

Dad looked at me.

“Enough to destroy everything.””

The room became silent.

Michael leaned forward.

“And she hid it.””

“Why?””

“Because she knew if the truth came out, everyone connected to that company would fall.””

I looked at the documents.

The company.

The trust.

The secrets.

It was never about money.

It was about hiding the past.

Mom suddenly spoke.

“So where is she?””

Everyone looked at her.

Michael smiled.

“That’s the question.””

My father stood.

“Where is my mother?””

Michael reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I was hoping you’d ask.””

Dad took it.

His hands shook.

Inside was a letter.

He unfolded it.

The room was quiet as he read.

Then his face changed.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

He handed it to me.

The handwriting was old.

But clear.

Emily,

If you are reading this, then the truth finally came out.

I looked at my father.

My hands trembled.

The letter continued.

Your father was not the only one who made mistakes. I did too. I stayed silent because I was afraid of losing my family.

I looked up.

Dad looked away.

The letter continued.

But silence has a cost. And one day, the person who suffers most will be the person who deserved honesty the most.

You.

My throat tightened.

The next line made my heart stop.

I left proof of everything with someone I trusted.

Someone who promised to protect you.

Someone who knows the truth about your father.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked confused.

Then I looked at Michael.

He smiled.

“No.””

Dad whispered.

Michael stepped closer.

“You finally understand.””

My father looked horrified.

“You had it.””

Michael nodded.

“All these years.””

“Why?””

Michael smiled.

“Because I wanted you to suffer.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You let everyone believe she was dead.””

“Yes.””

“You used her.””

Michael shrugged.

“She was useful.””

Mom looked disgusted.

“You’re sick.””

Michael ignored her.

He looked at me.

“But now you know.””

I held the letter tighter.

“What do you want?””

Michael smiled.

“The same thing everyone wants.””

“What?””

He looked at my father.

“Someone to admit they lost.””

My father stepped forward.

“I lost.””

Everyone looked at him.

He continued.

“I lost when I betrayed Daniel.””

He looked at Michael.

“I lost when I became like my father.””

Then he looked at me.

“But I won’t let you destroy Emily’s future.””

Michael smiled.

“Then you’ll have to stop me.””

The next morning, the entire family would face a choice.

Protect the company.

Or reveal the truth.

May you like

And when my father made his decision…

Nobody expected what he would do.
