Chapter 4: The Money Her Mother Left Behind

“Daniel, don't let her leave.””

Marcus's voice came through the phone so loudly that I barely heard the front door open.

Vanessa had one hand on the doorknob.

I turned toward her.

“Where are you going?””

She froze.

“Out.””

“Not until we finish this conversation.””

“I have nothing else to say.””

I looked at the phone.

“Marcus, stay on the line.””

“I'm here,” he replied.

“Daniel, I've been reviewing the trust documents. There's something you need to understand before you confront her.””

Vanessa's face had gone pale.

“Hang up,” she demanded.

I ignored her.

“Tell me.””

Marcus took a breath.

“Your first wife, Emily, established a trust for Lily shortly before she died. The money was supposed to remain protected until Lily turned eighteen, with limited withdrawals allowed only for specific expenses benefiting her.””

I closed my eyes.

Emily.

Even hearing her name after all these years brought back memories I had spent a long time trying to put away.

Emily had been the kind of woman who planned everything.

She labeled the drawers in Lily's nursery before our daughter was born. She kept a notebook of pediatric appointments, school ideas, and even the names of books she wanted to read with Lily.

When she became seriously ill, she spent her final months worrying about one thing.

What would happen to our little girl when she was no longer there?

I had promised her that Lily would always be protected.

And I had believed I kept that promise.

“What exactly did Emily leave?”” I asked.

“Approximately $280,000 in the original trust,” Marcus answered.

“There have been investment gains and some approved expenses. The current balance should be significantly higher.””

My knees felt weak.

“How much?””

“About $347,000, according to the last statement I received.””

I stared at Vanessa.

She looked away.

“Why wasn't I told about the withdrawals?””

Marcus continued.

“That's what concerns me. There are transactions that appear to have been authorized through a secondary administrator account. I found documents bearing your digital authorization, but the authentication history doesn't match your usual device.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, please. Let me explain.””

I covered the phone.

“Not another word.””

Marcus spoke again.

“Daniel, there's something else. The withdrawal requests list expenses for Lily, including education, medical care, and housing. But the destination accounts don't appear to belong to Lily.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did you use my daughter's trust?””

She shook her head quickly.

“No. I borrowed from it.””

I stared at her.

“You borrowed money from a seven-year-old?””

“It was temporary.””

“How much?””

She swallowed.

“Daniel—”

“How much?””

“Thirty-two thousand dollars.””

The number echoed through the room.

Thirty-two thousand.

I remembered Lily sitting on the sofa the previous afternoon, asking whether she was allowed to have new shoes.

Thirty-two thousand dollars had disappeared from her future while she was wearing shoes that hurt her feet.

“Where did it go?”” I asked.

Vanessa started crying.

“Your ex-husband was in trouble. He needed help keeping his business open. I was going to put everything back.””

“Why would Lily's trust pay for his business?””

“He promised to repay me.””

“Why did you use Lily's name?””

She looked down.

“I didn't think you'd understand.””

I almost laughed.

“Understand what? That you took money from my daughter's inheritance to give it to your ex-husband?””

“He's the father of my children!””

“And I'm Lily's father!””

My voice shook the room.

Upstairs, I heard a door open.

Lily appeared at the top of the staircase holding her little pink backpack.

She looked between us.

“Daddy?””

I immediately lowered my voice.

“It's okay, sweetheart. Come downstairs.””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“Lily, go back to your room.””

My daughter stopped.

I held out my hand.

“Come to Daddy.””

She came down slowly.

When she reached me, she slipped her fingers into mine.

“Are we going to Grandma's?””

“Yes.””

“Can I take my rabbit?””

“Of course.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“This is ridiculous. You're making a permanent decision over a misunderstanding.””

I looked at her.

“A misunderstanding doesn't explain forged authorization.””

“I didn't forge anything!””

Marcus's voice came through the phone.

“Vanessa, this is Marcus. The documents I reviewed contain an authorization bearing Daniel's name. He has just told me he didn't approve it. You need to understand how serious that is.””

Vanessa stared at the phone.

“Marcus, this is a family matter.””

“No,” he replied.

“The trust is a separate legal arrangement, and Lily is its beneficiary.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“You people are making me sound like a criminal.””

I picked up Lily's backpack.

“Then stop behaving like someone who thinks nobody will ever check the records.””

She stepped closer.

“Daniel, I love you.””

I looked at her.

“Did you love Lily when you made her sit outside that shoe store?””

Vanessa said nothing.

“Did you love her when you told her she might be sent away?””

Still nothing.

“Did you love her when you took the money her mother left to protect her?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to secure my children's future.””

I nodded slowly.

“And you decided my daughter's future was the easiest place to take money from.””

I opened the front door.

“I'm leaving. Don't contact Lily about this. Any communication about her can go through me.””

Vanessa grabbed the doorframe.

“Daniel, wait!””

I turned.

She looked desperate now.

“There is something you don't know about Emily's trust.””

“What?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Your ex-wife didn't leave all that money to Lily.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What are you talking about?””

“She left instructions. Specific instructions. And there's a condition that could change everything.””

Before I could respond, Marcus spoke.

“Daniel, don't let her confuse you. I have the original trust agreement. I'm sending it to you now.””

My phone vibrated.

A document appeared.

I opened it.

The first page carried Emily's signature.

The second page listed the trustees.

The third page contained a section titled:

*BENEFICIARY PROTECTION AND CUSTODIAL RESTRICTIONS.*

I read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

My hands began to shake.

Emily had anticipated the possibility that someone might try to use Lily's inheritance for personal benefit.

She had written a specific instruction.

No spouse, guardian, or household member could use the trust as a source of personal financial support.

But the final paragraph was the one that stopped me.

If any guardian knowingly misrepresented expenses or diverted funds, the trustee was required to investigate and review that guardian's access to Lily's financial affairs.

I looked up.

Vanessa was watching me.

“Why didn't you tell me about this condition?”” I asked.

She didn't answer.

Then my phone rang again.

This time, it was an unfamiliar woman.

“Mr. Daniel Carter?””

“Yes.””

“My name is Rebecca Hall. I'm the attorney overseeing the trust review.””

I glanced at Vanessa.

Rebecca continued.

“I believe you should know that your wife's ex-husband has already contacted our office.””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“What did he want?””

“To report that Vanessa was attempting to transfer additional funds from Lily's trust.””

I looked at the screen.

The amount was visible in the notification Rebecca had just emailed.

Vanessa had tried to take another sixty-five thousand dollars.

And this time, she hadn't been borrowing it.

She had been trying to move it permanently.
