Chapter 7: The Signature That Changed Everything
I read Rebecca Hall's signature three times.
Then I looked at Vanessa.
“Why is Rebecca's name on this document?””
Vanessa wiped her cheeks.
“Because she was there when Emily signed it.””
“That doesn't answer my question.””
“She knows what happened.””
I picked up the paper again.
The document was dated three months before Emily died. It referred to Lily's biological father, the original source of the inheritance, and a confidential arrangement involving someone whose name had been deliberately concealed.
My mind raced.
Emily had been my wife.
Lily was my daughter.
There had never been a question about either fact.
I remembered being in the hospital when Lily was born. I remembered holding her tiny hand while Emily slept. I remembered the first time Lily opened her eyes and looked at me.
I had never questioned my daughter's identity.
“Vanessa,” I said slowly, “what exactly is Andrew claiming?””
She looked toward my mother.
“Can we talk privately?””
“No.””
“Daniel, please.””
“Whatever you have to say concerns my daughter. You're not going to make her disappear from this conversation again.””
Vanessa lowered her head.
“Andrew says Emily received money from a family trust before you married her. He says the original deposit wasn't Emily's money.””
I frowned.
“Whose money was it?””
“He says it came from his family.””
I stared at her.
“That makes no sense.””
“He claims his father helped Emily when she was younger. Apparently, they had some kind of financial arrangement.””
“Then why would the money belong to Lily?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know everything.””
I pointed at the document.
“Then why did you sign anything?””
“I didn't sign it.””
“Why did you take it from Andrew?””
“Because I thought it would help me understand the trust.””
My mother finally spoke.
“Vanessa, you have spent months taking money from a little girl's future. Don't pretend you suddenly became interested in understanding her inheritance.””
Vanessa looked down.
“I was trying to protect my children.””
My mother shook her head.
“You keep saying that. But I haven't heard you explain why protecting your children required hurting someone else's.””
Vanessa stood.
“I knew this would happen. Nobody ever listens to me.””
I remained seated.
“Sit down.””
She hesitated.
Then she sat.
I called Rebecca on speakerphone.
She answered almost immediately.
“Daniel?””
“I have a document bearing your signature. It concerns Emily's trust.””
There was a long silence.
“Where did you get it?””
“Vanessa brought it.””
“Read me the date.””
I did.
Rebecca exhaled.
“I'm coming to see you.””
“Can you explain what it means?””
“Not over the phone.””
“Rebecca, I'm tired of being told that everyone knows something about my daughter's life except me.””
Her voice softened.
“I understand. But I need to see the document first. There are things in that file that must be explained in the proper context.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“She says Andrew is claiming the original trust money came from his family.””
Rebecca went quiet again.
Then she said something that frightened me.
“Andrew has no ownership rights over Lily's inheritance.””
“That's not what I asked.””
“I know.””
“Was Emily involved with him?””
Another pause.
“No, Daniel.””
“Did Andrew fund the trust?””
“I'll explain when I arrive.””
She ended the call.
I stared at the phone.
My mother sat beside me.
“Daniel, you need to breathe.””
I looked at the document.
“I don't know what to believe anymore.””
“You don't need to believe every accusation simply because someone presents a piece of paper.””
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“Andrew has more documents.””
I turned.
“What documents?””
“He says Emily wrote him letters.””
“What letters?””
“Letters about Lily.””
My heart began pounding.
“Where are they?””
“He has them.””
“Then we're going to get them.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“He won't hand them over.””
“Why?””
“Because he believes he has leverage.””
I leaned forward.
“What does he want?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“He wants the sixty-five thousand dollars.””
I stared.
“That's it?””
“No.””
She swallowed.
“He wants the remaining trust money released to his company. He says if we refuse, he'll make the documents public.””
My mother stood.
“This is extortion.””
Vanessa began crying again.
“I know.””
I looked at her.
“Then why did you cooperate?””
She covered her face.
“Because he told me he would make sure Mason and Chloe lost everything if I didn't.””
I was silent.
For the first time, I could see that Vanessa might have been frightened too.
But fear did not erase what she had done.
It didn't explain the shopping trip.
It didn't explain Lily's tears.
And it didn't explain why she had chosen to take money from a child rather than tell me the truth.
An hour later, Rebecca arrived.
She carried a leather briefcase and a sealed folder.
She greeted my mother, nodded to Vanessa, and sat across from me.
“May I see the document?””
I handed it over.
Rebecca studied it carefully.
Then she closed her eyes.
“I was hoping this would never become necessary.””
“What is it?””
She placed the document on the table.
“Emily asked me to witness a confidential declaration shortly before her death. But this page is incomplete.””
“What is missing?””
“The attachment.””
I frowned.
“Where is it?””
“Andrew has it.””
Vanessa nodded.
“He keeps it in a safe at his office.””
Rebecca looked at her.
“Why didn't you tell me this earlier?””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“Because Andrew threatened my children.””
Rebecca turned back to me.
“Daniel, I need to explain something about Emily's trust. The original funds did not come entirely from Emily's personal savings.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Then where did they come from?””
“Emily's father established a family education fund. When he died, she inherited a portion of it. She placed that inheritance into a protected trust for Lily.””
I frowned.
“Why would Andrew have anything to do with it?””
Rebecca opened her briefcase.
“Because Andrew's father was Emily's father's business partner. The two families had a complicated financial history.””
She showed me an old financial statement.
“Before Emily died, there was a dispute involving a property investment. Andrew's father claimed that part of the original capital belonged to his family.””
I looked at the numbers.
“Did they resolve it?””
“Emily believed they had.””
“Then why is Andrew making these claims now?””
Rebecca looked directly at me.
“Because his father died, and Andrew inherited his business records. He appears to be using the old dispute to pressure Vanessa into helping him access Lily's trust.””
I shook my head.
“So none of this means Andrew has a right to the money?””
“Correct.””
Vanessa suddenly leaned forward.
“But what about the letter?””
Rebecca looked at her.
“What letter?””
“The one Emily wrote about Daniel.””
Rebecca's expression changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa reached into her handbag and produced another folded paper.
“This one.””
She placed it on the table.
I opened it.
It was a handwritten letter.
Emily's handwriting.
My eyes moved across the first few lines.
Daniel, there is something I should have told you about the years before we married.
I stopped.
Rebecca immediately reached for the paper.
“Daniel, wait.””
I pulled it closer.
“Why?””
“Because this letter was never included in the trust documents. We need to establish whether it's complete and authentic.””
I looked at her.
“It's Emily's handwriting.””
Rebecca nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
I continued reading.
There was a time when I considered leaving everything behind. I was frightened, confused, and unsure whether I was making the right decisions.
My throat tightened.
The next paragraph was worse.
If Andrew ever tries to use our daughter's name to reopen the old dispute, remember that he was never promised anything from her inheritance.
I looked up.
“Why does she mention Andrew?””
Rebecca folded her hands.
“Because Andrew's father once offered to help Emily resolve the family property dispute. Andrew later became involved in the matter.””
I continued reading.
The final paragraph had been underlined.
The most important thing is that Lily must never be made to feel responsible for the mistakes of adults.
I lowered the letter.
My mother was crying quietly.
Vanessa stared at the floor.
Then Rebecca spoke.
“There is one more thing you should know.””
I looked at her.
“Emily named an independent investigator in the original agreement. Someone who was supposed to verify every disputed transaction.””
“Who?””
Rebecca hesitated.
“Andrew Bennett.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“He was appointed because his father had helped establish the original investment structure. He was supposed to report conflicts, not benefit from them.””
I stood.
“So the person trying to take my daughter's money was originally responsible for protecting it?””
Rebecca nodded.
“Yes.””
My phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
*Andrew:* I hear Rebecca is finally telling you the truth.
Another message followed.
*Andrew:* Bring Vanessa to my office tomorrow. Come alone if you want the original attachment.
I looked at Rebecca.
She shook her head.
“Do not agree to his conditions.””
I typed a response.
*Me:* You'll receive nothing from Lily's trust.
The reply came immediately.
*Andrew:* Then you should prepare yourself for what Emily left behind.
A photograph appeared.
It showed a sealed envelope.
On the front was written:
May you like
*TO DANIEL — OPEN ONLY IF THE TRUST IS CHALLENGED.*
And beneath it was Emily's signature.
