Chapter 8: The Truth Andrew Kept Hidden
The photograph stayed on my screen all night.
I enlarged it until Emily's handwriting filled the display.
I knew that envelope.
Not because I had seen it before, but because I remembered the small blue symbol she used whenever she wanted to mark something important.
A tiny star.
She had drawn it on Lily's birthday cards, school forms, and the notes she used to leave in my lunch bag.
The envelope in Andrew's photograph had the same star.
I called Rebecca again.
“Can you identify that envelope?””
“Yes,” she answered.
“Is it the missing attachment?””
“I believe so.””
“What's inside?””
“I don't know.””
I rubbed my forehead.
“Rebecca, this has gone far enough.””
“I agree. But we cannot allow Andrew to control how the document is released.””
“Then how do we get it?””
“Through the proper legal process.””
I looked toward the hallway.
Lily was asleep upstairs at my mother's house.
“I don't want this turning into a public fight.””
“Then we need to establish the facts before anyone makes further claims.””
The following morning, Rebecca arranged a formal meeting at Andrew's office.
She brought Mr. Thompson.
I brought Marcus.
Vanessa arrived separately.
She looked exhausted.
Her eyes were swollen, and she wore the same burgundy blouse she had worn the day she confronted me in our living room.
Andrew's office occupied the top floor of a glass building downtown.
He was waiting behind a large desk.
He stood when we entered.
“Daniel. Finally.””
I didn't shake his hand.
“Where's the envelope?””
Andrew smiled.
“Straight to business.””
“I'm not here to discuss anything else.””
He leaned back.
“Vanessa told me you've been difficult.””
I glanced at her.
She looked down.
“Show me the document.””
Andrew opened a drawer.
He removed the cream-colored envelope.
My heart started pounding.
There was Emily's handwriting.
There was the tiny blue star.
I reached for it.
Andrew held it back.
“Not so fast.””
Rebecca stepped forward.
“Mr. Bennett, you are required to produce the original attachment under the trust investigation.””
Andrew looked at her.
“I'm aware of the agreement.””
“Then hand it over.””
He ignored her.
Instead, he looked at me.
“Do you know why Emily was so protective of Lily's inheritance?””
“Because she wanted her daughter to have a secure future.””
Andrew smiled.
“That's what she told you.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“What are you implying?””
“Emily knew there was a dispute over the original funds. She knew the investment had been created through a family arrangement. And she knew your marriage was going to complicate everything.””
I stared at him.
“Explain.””
Andrew opened a second folder.
He placed several old photographs on the desk.
One showed Emily standing beside a man in a dark suit.
I recognized the man immediately.
It was Andrew's father.
Another photograph showed Emily signing documents at a long conference table.
A third showed Rebecca, much younger, standing beside them.
“Your first wife and my father were involved in a property investment,” Andrew explained.
“When the investment became profitable, they agreed to divide the proceeds.””
Rebecca interrupted.
“That dispute was resolved before Emily's death.””
Andrew laughed.
“That's what you keep telling everyone.””
He opened the folder.
“Here is the original investment agreement.””
I examined it.
The figures were complicated, but one detail was clear.
Emily's father had contributed the majority of the initial capital.
Andrew's father had managed the property.
The agreement listed the profits as belonging to Emily's family trust.
I looked up.
“Where is your claim coming from?””
Andrew tapped another page.
“A later amendment.””
Rebecca reached for the document.
Andrew pulled it away.
“That amendment is disputed,” she said firmly.
“Of course you would say that.””
I looked between them.
“What amendment?””
Andrew smiled.
“The one that says part of the investment profits were supposed to go to my family.””
Rebecca turned toward me.
“Daniel, that amendment was never authenticated. It was rejected during the original dispute.””
Andrew's expression hardened.
“You're leaving out the important part.””
He opened the envelope.
Inside were several sheets of paper.
He pulled out the first page.
“Emily wrote this herself.””
I looked at the handwriting.
It was unmistakably hers.
Andrew read aloud.
“'If the family dispute is reopened, I want the matter resolved without affecting Lily's future.''”
He placed the letter on the desk.
“Emily knew my father had a claim.””
I stared at him.
“She also said Lily's future must not be affected.””
Andrew smiled.
“Which is why I'm asking for the money to be released to settle the matter.””
I shook my head.
“That's not what the letter says.””
His smile faded.
“It's what the agreement means.””
“No. It means you want my daughter's money.””
Andrew leaned forward.
“Your daughter has more money than she will ever need. My father spent years building that investment.””
Rebecca placed her hand on the table.
“Mr. Bennett, stop misrepresenting the document.””
Andrew looked at her.
“You should be careful, Rebecca. You were there when Emily signed the amendment.””
The room went quiet.
I turned toward Rebecca.
“Did you witness it?””
She looked at me.
“I witnessed the original agreement. Not the amendment Andrew is presenting.””
Andrew laughed.
“Convenient.””
Mr. Thompson finally spoke.
“Mr. Bennett, we have requested the original electronic records. Until those records are verified, your claims are unsupported.””
Andrew closed the folder.
“Then I suppose we're finished.””
He placed the envelope inside a drawer.
I stepped forward.
“Give me Emily's letter.””
“No.””
“It's addressed to me.””
“And I found it in my father's records.””
Rebecca stood.
“You cannot withhold evidence relevant to an active trust investigation.””
Andrew shrugged.
“Then get a court order.””
We left without the envelope.
Outside the building, I turned toward Rebecca.
“Why didn't you tell me Andrew was the original investigator?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“Because the arrangement was confidential, and he was removed from the role years ago.””
“Why?””
“He had a conflict of interest.””
“What conflict?””
Rebecca took a breath.
“His father wanted to claim part of the investment proceeds. Andrew was supposed to investigate that claim independently.””
“And he didn't?””
“He submitted an incomplete report.””
I stared at her.
“Why wasn't I told?””
“Because the dispute had been closed, and Emily's trust remained protected.””
I shook my head.
“Now he's trying to reopen it.””
“Yes.””
Vanessa had been standing several feet away.
She suddenly spoke.
“There's something I need to tell you.””
I turned.
“What?””
“Andrew didn't show me the entire document.””
Rebecca frowned.
“What do you mean?””
“He showed me a different page. He said Emily had agreed to let him manage the money if anything happened to her.””
Rebecca's expression changed.
“That's impossible.””
Vanessa reached into her handbag.
She removed a small USB drive.
“I copied the files from his office.””
I stared at it.
“You stole documents?””
“I wanted proof.””
“Why didn't you tell me earlier?””
“Because I was afraid.””
Rebecca took the USB drive.
“Where did you get this?””
“From Andrew's desk. I copied everything when he left the room.””
Mr. Thompson looked at her.
“Did you alter anything?””
“No.””
He nodded.
“We'll examine it.””
Vanessa turned toward me.
“Daniel, I know you don't trust me.””
I said nothing.
“But I didn't want Andrew to get away with everything.””
I looked at her.
“You helped him take money from Lily.””
“I know.””
“You lied to me.””
“I know.””
“You made her believe she wasn't wanted.””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“I know.””
I looked away.
There was no apology that could immediately repair what she had done.
But the USB drive might finally reveal the truth.
That afternoon, Marcus called.
“Daniel, we've opened the files.””
“What did you find?””
“Several versions of the original agreement. And one recorded video.””
I stopped walking.
“A video?””
“Yes. It's from Emily.””
My chest tightened.
“Can you send it?””
“Rebecca is reviewing it first. But Daniel, there's something strange.””
“What?””
“The video was recorded six days before Emily died.””
I closed my eyes.
“What's strange about that?””
“Emily mentions someone she says will eventually try to claim Lily's inheritance.””
I gripped the phone.
“Who?””
Marcus hesitated.
“Andrew.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She had been standing beside the car.
She saw my expression.
“What happened?”” she asked.
I didn't answer.
Marcus continued.
“But that's not the part that concerns me.””
“What is?””
He lowered his voice.
“Emily says Andrew wasn't acting alone.””
I felt a chill.
“Who else?””
Marcus sent me the video.
I opened it.
Emily appeared on the screen.
She was sitting in the old living room of our former house.
Her face was thinner than I remembered, but her eyes were bright.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Daniel, if you're watching this, someone has finally challenged Lily's trust.””
I covered my mouth.
Then Emily continued.
“I need you to listen carefully. Andrew is not the only person who knows about the original arrangement.””
She paused.
“There is someone in your family who helped him.””
My heart began racing.
Emily looked down at something off camera.
Then she raised her eyes again.
“And Daniel, if that person is still close to you, please don't tell them you've seen this video.””
The screen went black.
I stared at my phone.
Vanessa whispered, “Who was she talking about?””
I looked at her.
“I don't know.””
Then another message arrived from Marcus.
*Marcus:* Daniel, the video file contains a second recording. It was saved separately.
I opened it.
This time, Emily wasn't alone.
A second person was sitting beside her.
The camera captured only part of their face.
But I recognized the voice immediately.
May you like
It belonged to my mother.
And what she said next made me question everything I thought I knew about the last months of Emily's life.
