Chapter 6: The Agreement Nobody Told Me About

I didn't sleep that night.

Andrew's words kept repeating in my head.

Lily's money was always supposed to come to us.

At six the following morning, I called Rebecca.

She answered before the second ring.

“Mr. Carter?””

“I want a full investigation. Every document, every transfer, every person who has accessed Lily's trust.””

“That's already underway.””

“I also want to know whether Andrew has any legal authority over my daughter.””

“He does not have authority over her trust. His name appears only in the disputed withdrawal documents.””

“Then why does he believe he can take the money?””

Rebecca paused.

“I suspect we'll need to hear his explanation directly.””

I looked at the handwritten note on my laptop.

Once the money is transferred, Daniel won't be able to stop us.

“Arrange a meeting,” I said.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

“And Daniel?””

“Yes?””

“Do not meet him alone. Bring your attorney.””

I agreed.

At eight, I drove Lily to school.

She wore the same blue jeans, but this time she had a new pair of white sneakers.

I had bought them the night before.

She had chosen them herself.

When she climbed out of the car, she turned around.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Do they look nice?””

I smiled.

“They look perfect.””

She grinned and ran toward the school entrance.

I watched until she disappeared inside.

Then I drove straight to Rebecca's office.

She was waiting in a conference room with two thick folders.

Marcus was already there.

Beside him sat a man in a gray suit.

“Daniel,” Rebecca said, standing.

“This is Mr. Thompson, our trust litigation attorney.””

I shook his hand.

“Thank you for coming.””

He pointed to a chair.

“Let's get started.””

Rebecca opened the first folder.

“Here is the history of Emily's trust.””

She explained that Emily had originally deposited $280,000.

The money had been invested over several years.

By the time Emily died, the trust had grown substantially.

The agreement permitted withdrawals for Lily's education, healthcare, and certain approved living expenses.

It did not permit personal loans to unrelated adults.

It did not permit the purchase of property for someone else's business.

And it certainly did not permit the transfer of funds to an ex-spouse.

I rubbed my forehead.

“How did Vanessa gain access?””

Rebecca turned to the second folder.

“Your wife was listed as an emergency household contact in one of the administrative records. That did not make her a trustee or give her independent withdrawal authority.””

“So she couldn't legally take anything?””

“Correct.””

“Then how did she do it?””

Mr. Thompson opened his laptop.

“Someone submitted altered authorization documents.””

He showed me a digital form.

My name appeared at the bottom.

The signature looked convincing.

But it wasn't mine.

I leaned closer.

“I never signed this.””

“We know,” he said.

“The electronic signature history indicates that the document was submitted from a device registered to your household.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Can we identify the device?””

“Possibly.””

He opened another file.

“There are login records from the evening of August 12.””

I remembered that night.

Vanessa had told me she was helping the children with school supplies.

I had been upstairs on a work call.

She had been alone in the kitchen with my laptop.

I closed my eyes.

“That's when it happened.””

Marcus nodded.

“Most likely.””

Rebecca turned another page.

“There's also an unusual series of messages between Vanessa and Andrew.””

She placed printed screenshots on the table.

I read the first one.

*Vanessa:* Daniel still thinks the trust is untouchable.

*Andrew:* Then we need to move before he starts asking questions.

*Vanessa:* I'm working on it.

*Andrew:* You promised me this would happen before Christmas.

*Vanessa:* I know. I just need him to believe the money is being used for the children.

My stomach tightened.

I continued reading.

*Andrew:* What about the little girl?

*Vanessa:* Lily won't understand any of this.

*Andrew:* She doesn't need to. She's seven.

I stopped.

My hands began shaking.

“Keep going,” Mr. Thompson said quietly.

The next message was worse.

*Andrew:* Once the property is purchased, we can sell it later.

*Vanessa:* And Daniel?

*Andrew:* By then, he'll have no control over the money.

I dropped the paper.

“This was never about helping the children.””

Rebecca shook her head.

“It appears the property was intended to become an investment controlled by Andrew's company.””

I stood.

“Then why did Vanessa tell me she was arranging somewhere for her children to live?””

Mr. Thompson looked up.

“Because that may have been the explanation she intended to give you.””

I paced toward the window.

The room felt too small.

For two years, I had paid for Andrew's children's education, clothes, medical appointments, and activities.

I had believed I was helping two children who deserved stability.

Now I wondered whether I had been financing a plan that would eventually take money from my own daughter.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Vanessa.

*Vanessa:* We need to talk. Please don't let lawyers destroy our family.

I stared at it.

Then another message arrived.

*Vanessa:* I know you're angry, but Andrew is coming over tonight. We can explain everything together.

I showed Rebecca.

She frowned.

“Do not agree to anything without us.””

“I wasn't planning to.””

“Daniel, there's another issue.””

She opened a separate file.

“This is a message Andrew sent to Vanessa yesterday.””

I leaned closer.

It contained only one sentence.

*Andrew:* If Daniel discovers the original agreement, tell him Emily knew everything.

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“What original agreement?””

Rebecca turned the laptop toward me.

“We're still trying to obtain the complete attachment. But there is a reference to a document Emily signed before her death.””

I stared at the screen.

“Emily signed something involving Andrew?””

“We don't know yet.””

“Why would she?””

Rebecca looked uncomfortable.

“That's what we need to establish.””

I shook my head.

“My first wife never met Andrew.””

“Not according to the records we currently have.””

The words made no sense.

I sat down slowly.

Rebecca closed the folder.

“Daniel, I think the best thing you can do today is keep Lily away from this dispute and allow us to investigate.””

I nodded.

But my mind was elsewhere.

What if Andrew had known Emily?

What if Vanessa had discovered something about Lily's inheritance that I hadn't?

And what if the money was only one part of a much larger plan?

At four that afternoon, I picked Lily up from school.

She climbed into the car holding a drawing.

“Daddy, look!””

It showed three people standing beneath a bright yellow sun.

Me.

Her.

And Grandma.

I smiled.

“That's beautiful.””

She pointed to the little girl in the middle.

“That's me.””

“I can tell.””

“And that's you.””

I nodded.

“Where's Vanessa?””

Lily looked down at the paper.

“I didn't draw her.””

I didn't know what to say.

Instead, I started the engine.

When we reached my mother's house, she was waiting on the porch.

“Daniel, there's someone inside.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

“Vanessa.””

My body stiffened.

“Why did you let her in?””

“She said she wanted to speak to Lily.””

I looked toward the living room.

Vanessa was sitting on the sofa.

She had brought a large pink gift bag.

Lily immediately moved behind me.

“Mommy?””

Vanessa stood.

“Hi, sweetheart.””

She opened the gift bag.

Inside was a brand-new pair of expensive shoes, a matching jacket, and several dresses.

“I bought these for you,” she said.

Lily didn't move.

Vanessa smiled.

“See? Mommy didn't forget you.””

I looked at the shopping bag.

Then at Vanessa.

“Where did you get the money?””

Her smile disappeared.

“Daniel, don't do this in front of her.””

“Answer me.””

“I bought them myself.””

“With what money?””

She looked away.

I stepped closer.

“Did you use the trust?””

“No.””

“Did you use the family account?””

“Daniel!””

Lily flinched.

I immediately lowered my voice.

“Please don't shout.””

Vanessa placed the bag on the sofa.

“I'm trying to make things right.””

I shook my head.

“You don't repair what happened by buying the child a few dresses.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you here?””

She looked at Lily.

“Because I miss her.””

Lily held my hand.

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Sweetheart, I know I made mistakes. But I never wanted you to think I didn't love you.””

Lily looked at her for a long moment.

Then she asked a question that made Vanessa go completely still.

“Mommy, if you loved me, why did you tell me my daddy would send me away?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Lily continued.

“And why did you tell me not to tell Daddy about the money?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Daniel, she's confused.””

I shook my head.

“She remembers exactly what happened.””

Vanessa started crying.

“I was under pressure.””

“From whom?””

She wiped her cheeks.

“Andrew.””

The room went silent.

My mother stepped forward.

“What did he do?””

Vanessa looked down at her hands.

“He threatened to expose something.””

I stared at her.

“Expose what?””

She shook her head.

“I can't tell you here.””

“You can tell me now.””

“No.””

“Then we're finished.””

She looked up sharply.

“Daniel, if I tell you what Emily did, you may never look at your first wife the same way again.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What did Emily do?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

Then she reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded document.

“I found this in Andrew's safe,” she whispered.

She placed it on the coffee table.

I opened it.

The top line carried Emily's full name.

Below it was a date.

It was dated three months before Emily died.

And at the bottom, beneath the signatures, was a sentence that made my entire world stop.

*I, Emily Carter, acknowledge that Lily's biological father is entitled to know the truth about her birth and the identity of the person who funded her original trust.*

I looked up at Vanessa.

“What does this mean?””

She started crying harder.

“Daniel, Andrew isn't just the man I used to be married to.””

I stared at her.

“Then who is he?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Andrew was the person Emily trusted with the original trust documents. And he says he has proof that the money in Lily's inheritance didn't come from where you think it did.””

I looked down at the document again.

My hands were shaking.

Then I noticed the second signature.

It wasn't Andrew's.

It wasn't Vanessa's.

It belonged to a woman whose name I hadn't heard in seven years.

May you like

*Rebecca Hall.*

And suddenly, I realized that the lawyer investigating my wife's actions might know far more about my daughter's inheritance than she had admitted.
