Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Emily's Secret
My mother opened the door before I could knock.
She took one look at Lily's face and immediately pulled us both inside.
“Daniel, what happened?””
“Mom, I need you to keep Lily with you tonight.””
My mother looked down at her granddaughter.
“Sweetheart, why don't you come help Grandma make some hot chocolate?””
Lily nodded.
She followed her into the kitchen, still holding her stuffed rabbit.
When they disappeared, I finally exhaled.
My mother returned a few minutes later.
“She's upstairs choosing a movie. Now tell me what's happening.””
I placed my phone on the dining table.
“It's about Emily's trust.””
My mother's expression changed.
“What about it?””
“Vanessa has been accessing it.””
My mother slowly sat down.
“Accessing it how?””
“She's been transferring money. At least thirty-two thousand dollars. And Marcus found another attempted withdrawal for sixty-five thousand.””
My mother covered her mouth.
“Oh, Daniel.””
I walked toward the window.
“I don't understand how she even got access.””
“Did Emily ever explain the arrangements to you?””
“She told me everything was protected. Marcus handled the financial side.””
My mother looked down.
“Emily came to see me once before she died.””
I turned.
“When?””
“About six weeks before Lily was born.””
I frowned.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because she asked me not to.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did she say?””
My mother took a breath.
“She told me she was worried about Lily growing up in a household where someone might make her feel less important than other children.””
I stared at her.
“She was worried about that?””
“She said children needed more than money. They needed to know they were wanted.””
I sat down.
My mother reached across the table.
“Emily asked me to promise that if anything ever happened to you, I would make sure Lily never felt like a burden.””
I closed my eyes.
“I promised Emily the same thing.””
“I know.””
She squeezed my hand.
“But, Daniel, there was something else. Emily gave me an envelope.””
I looked up.
“What envelope?””
“She said I should only open it if Lily ever told me she felt unwanted in her own home.””
My heart began pounding.
“Where is it?””
My mother stood and walked toward the cabinet beside the staircase.
She opened a small drawer and removed an old cream-colored envelope.
Emily's handwriting was on the front.
*For Daniel, if Lily ever needs you to understand.*
I couldn't move.
My mother handed it to me.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a handwritten letter and a small photograph.
The photograph showed Emily holding newborn Lily in the hospital.
She was exhausted, but smiling.
I recognized the tiny yellow blanket wrapped around our daughter.
My hands trembled as I unfolded the letter.
Daniel,
If you're reading this, something may have happened that made Lily question whether she belongs.
Please don't wait until she asks you twice before you show her that she is loved.
I know you will do your best. But sometimes the people we trust most are not the people who understand what a child needs.
I established the trust to protect Lily's future. I also made arrangements for someone to help you recognize when her interests were being ignored.
There is a woman who knows the full story. Her name is Rebecca Hall.
If you ever need to understand why I was so careful, ask Rebecca to show you the sealed attachment.
One more thing, Daniel.
If someone tells Lily she must compete with another child for love, please remind her that love is not a limited resource.
She never needs to become smaller to make room for anyone else.
I love you both.
Emily.
I couldn't finish reading the last sentence.
My mother sat beside me.
“Emily knew something,” I whispered.
“I think she did.””
“Did she know Vanessa?””
My mother shook her head.
“Not personally. But she knew about the possibility of someone using Lily's inheritance.””
I picked up my phone and called Rebecca.
She answered immediately.
“Mr. Carter?””
“I found Emily's letter. It mentions a sealed attachment.””
There was a pause.
“Yes. I was expecting you might eventually ask about that.””
“What is it?””
“An additional document Emily signed before her death. It contains a list of conditions and a named independent guardian for certain financial decisions if the primary trustee becomes unavailable or compromised.””
“Who is the guardian?””
Rebecca hesitated.
“Your mother.””
I looked at the woman sitting beside me.
My mother stared back in disbelief.
“Me?””
Rebecca continued.
“Emily chose her because she trusted her to put Lily's needs above every other family interest.””
My mother covered her mouth.
I shook my head slowly.
“Why didn't anyone tell us?””
“Because the arrangement was designed to remain dormant unless certain conditions were triggered.””
“What conditions?””
“Evidence that someone had used the trust for unauthorized personal expenses.””
I looked toward the staircase.
Lily was upstairs.
I could hear the television playing.
“How much has been taken?”” I asked.
“I'm still calculating the full amount. But the attempted sixty-five-thousand-dollar transfer was stopped before completion.””
“Who authorized the earlier withdrawals?””
“That's what we're investigating.””
I looked down at the trust statement.
“Can you stop Vanessa from accessing anything else?””
“Her access has been suspended pending review.””
I closed my eyes.
“Thank you.””
Before Rebecca ended the call, she added something.
“Mr. Carter, I also need to discuss the person who requested the additional withdrawal.””
“Was it Vanessa?””
“No.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“The request came from an account associated with someone named Andrew Bennett.””
Vanessa's ex-husband.
I felt a chill.
“Did he have access to Lily's trust?””
“Not directly. But someone submitted a document claiming he had authority to receive funds for a housing project benefiting Lily.””
I looked at my mother.
“That's impossible.””
Rebecca's voice became more serious.
“The document includes a statement claiming Lily would be living with him part-time.””
I stood.
“Absolutely not.””
“I understand. That's why the transfer was stopped.””
I ended the call.
For several seconds, I stared at the wall.
Then my mother asked, “What are you going to do?””
I looked toward the staircase.
“Find out why Vanessa's ex-husband thinks he has any right to my daughter's money.””
My mother nodded.
“Then we'll do it properly.””
That evening, I ordered Lily's favorite pizza.
She sat at the kitchen table with my mother, laughing at something on the television.
For the first time in days, she looked like a little girl again.
When I tucked her into bed, she held my hand.
“Daddy?””
“Yes, sweetheart?””
“Can I ask you something?””
“Anything.””
“Is Mommy still mad at me?””
I sat on the edge of her bed.
“Vanessa's feelings are not your responsibility.””
She looked down.
“Does that mean she's not coming back?””
I struggled to find the right answer.
“Things are going to be different for a while. But you're safe, and I will explain everything in a way you can understand.””
She nodded.
Then she whispered, “I don't want Mason and Chloe to hate me.””
I brushed her hair away from her forehead.
“They're children too, baby. None of this is your fault.””
She turned toward her stuffed rabbit.
“Can I still have new shoes?””
I smiled sadly.
“Yes.””
“Even if they're expensive?””
“Even then.””
She finally smiled.
I kissed her forehead and turned off the light.
Downstairs, my mother was waiting with my laptop.
“Daniel, I found something.””
She pointed at an email from Rebecca.
It contained a scanned copy of the document Vanessa's ex-husband had submitted.
I opened it.
The first page was a financial authorization.
The second was a housing proposal.
The third was a declaration signed by Vanessa.
It stated that Lily would be placed under Andrew's temporary care if certain financial arrangements were approved.
I read it twice.
Then I noticed the date.
It had been signed four months earlier.
Four months.
Before the shopping trip.
Before Lily complained about her shoes.
Before Vanessa had ever told me she wanted to secure another home.
I looked at my mother.
“She was planning this before any of this happened.””
My mother nodded.
At the bottom of the document was a paragraph describing the intended purpose of the proposed arrangement.
It said that Lily's inheritance would be used to fund a property purchased for the benefit of all three children.
But the property would be registered under a company controlled by Andrew.
I stared at the screen.
“Why would Emily's money buy a house for Vanessa's ex-husband?””
My mother didn't answer.
Instead, she pointed to the final page.
There was a handwritten note attached to it.
The handwriting was Vanessa's.
Once the money is transferred, Daniel won't be able to stop us.
I felt my blood run cold.
Then my phone rang.
It was Andrew.
I answered.
“Why are you trying to take my daughter's inheritance?””
He laughed softly.
“Daniel, I think you've misunderstood the situation.””
“Then explain it.””
“Vanessa and I have an agreement.””
“What agreement?””
He paused.
May you like
Then he said:
“The agreement is that Lily's money was always supposed to come to us.””
