Chapter 9: The Promise My Mother Never Told Me About

I watched the second recording three times.

My mother was sitting beside Emily.

She was younger, her hair darker, and she wore the blue cardigan I remembered from the year Lily was born.

Emily held a folder in her lap.

My mother leaned toward the camera.

“Daniel cannot know yet,” she said.

Emily shook her head.

“He deserves to know.””

“Not while he's grieving. Not while everything is still uncertain.””

Emily looked down.

“Then promise me you'll tell him if anyone tries to take Lily's money.””

My mother nodded.

“I promise.””

The recording ended.

I sat motionless in the car.

Vanessa was beside me.

“Daniel?””

I couldn't answer.

My mother had known.

She had known about Andrew, the original agreement, and the possibility that someone might try to take Lily's inheritance.

And she had never told me.

I drove straight back to her house.

She was in the kitchen preparing dinner.

When she saw my face, she put down the knife.

“What's wrong?””

I held up my phone.

“Did you know?””

She looked at the screen.

Then her face changed.

“Daniel…”

“Did you know Emily was worried about someone taking Lily's inheritance?””

My mother slowly pulled out a chair.

“Yes.””

I stared at her.

“For how long?””

“Since before Emily died.””

I felt something break inside me.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

She lowered her eyes.

“Because Emily asked me not to.””

“She asked you not to tell me that my daughter's inheritance was at risk?””

“She believed telling you would create unnecessary conflict.””

“Conflict with whom?””

My mother hesitated.

“Andrew's father.””

I sat down.

“Start from the beginning.””

She folded her hands.

“Years ago, Emily's father invested in several properties with Andrew's father. They were friends. They trusted each other.””

“I know that part.””

“When Emily inherited her father's estate, she discovered some financial records didn't match. She asked Rebecca to investigate.””

“And?””

“My understanding was that the dispute had been resolved. But Andrew's father never accepted the final settlement.””

I leaned forward.

“What does that have to do with you?””

My mother looked at me.

“Emily asked me to help protect Lily if the dispute ever resurfaced.””

I stared.

“Protect her how?””

“She wanted someone who would make sure Lily's money wasn't used to settle an adult disagreement.””

I shook my head.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

My mother began crying.

“Because Emily was dying, Daniel.””

I looked away.

“She was terrified. She was afraid that if you knew about the dispute, you would spend the rest of your life fighting people who might never come back.””

“So she decided I didn't deserve to know?””

“She decided Lily needed peace.””

I stood.

“And what about the last two years? When Vanessa entered my life? Did you know she was connected to Andrew?””

My mother hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“Mom?””

“I didn't know she was planning to access the trust.””

“But you knew they had a connection?””

“Yes.””

I took a step backward.

“How?””

My mother wiped her cheeks.

“Andrew's father introduced Vanessa to me at a charity event several years ago. He said she had worked with his son on some business matters.””

I stared at her.

“Did you know Vanessa and Andrew had been married?””

“No. I found that out later.””

“When?””

“After you introduced her to me.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You knew my wife had a previous connection to the man trying to take my daughter's inheritance, and you said nothing?””

“I didn't know they were working together.””

“Then why didn't you warn me?””

My mother began sobbing.

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

I looked toward the staircase.

Lily was upstairs watching television.

I lowered my voice.

“Everyone keeps saying they're protecting someone. Emily protected Lily. You protected me.

Vanessa protected her children. Andrew protected his father's legacy.””

I shook my head.

“But nobody protected the little girl who was sitting outside a shoe store.””

My mother covered her face.

“I am so sorry.””

I stood there for a long time.

Then I walked upstairs.

Lily was lying on the bed with her rabbit.

“Daddy?””

“Hey, sweetheart.””

She smiled.

“Grandma said we're having spaghetti.””

“We are.””

“Can I help?””

“Absolutely.””

I sat beside her.

She studied my face.

“Are you sad?””

I brushed her cheek.

“A little.””

“Is it because of Mommy?””

I nodded.

She was quiet for a moment.

Then she reached for my hand.

“It's okay, Daddy. You can be sad.””

I almost cried.

I kissed her forehead.

“Thank you, baby.””

Downstairs, my phone rang.

Rebecca.

I answered.

“Daniel, we examined the USB drive.””

“What did you find?””

“The second recording confirms that your mother was aware of the original dispute. But there's something more important.””

“What?””

“We found the complete original attachment.””

I sat up.

“Where?””

“On the USB drive. It was hidden inside a folder with Emily's medical records.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“What's in it?””

“An agreement signed by Emily, Rebecca, and Andrew's father.””

“What does it say?””

Rebecca took a breath.

“Andrew's father had no ownership rights over Lily's trust. In exchange for that acknowledgment, he agreed to withdraw all claims against Emily's estate.””

I closed my eyes.

“So Andrew has no case.””

“Not on the basis of the original agreement.””

“Then why is he still trying?””

“Because the agreement contains a separate confidentiality clause. It appears Andrew believes there is information in the attachment that could embarrass several people if it became public.””

I frowned.

“What information?””

Rebecca paused.

“Daniel, I think you should come to my office tomorrow.””

“Just tell me.””

She hesitated.

“Emily's father had another child.””

I went still.

“What?””

“A son.””

I looked toward the hallway.

“What does that have to do with Lily?””

“According to the document, Emily's father had a son from a relationship before his marriage. That son was entitled to a portion of the family estate.””

I struggled to understand.

“Who is he?””

Rebecca lowered her voice.

“Andrew's father.””

I stared at the phone.

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

“Are you telling me Andrew's father was Emily's uncle?””

“Yes.””

“And the investment money—”

“Was part of a family inheritance dispute.””

I sat down.

“So Andrew wasn't completely inventing the family connection.””

“No. But that doesn't give him ownership of Lily's trust.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“Why didn't Emily tell me?””

“Because the dispute had already been settled. She wanted to keep the matter private.””

I looked at the wall.

A family secret.

An old inheritance.

A dead man's disputed estate.

And a seven-year-old girl who had somehow become the center of a financial battle she couldn't understand.

“Rebecca, I want the complete agreement.””

“You'll have it tomorrow.””

After the call, I went downstairs.

My mother was sitting alone at the dining table.

I stopped in front of her.

“Mom, I need you to answer one more question.””

She looked up.

“What?””

“Did you know Andrew was Vanessa's ex-husband before I married her?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Did Emily ever mention Vanessa?””

My mother hesitated.

Then she nodded.

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What did she say?””

My mother looked at the table.

“Emily once mentioned that Andrew had been involved with a woman who had two young children. She said he had a habit of using people when he needed something.””

I stared at her.

“Did she mention the woman's name?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Vanessa.””

I stepped backward.

The room seemed to spin.

“Emily knew Vanessa?””

“Not personally. She had seen her at one of the family events.””

I lowered my voice.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

My mother reached for my hand.

“Daniel, I swear I never knew Vanessa would become your wife.””

I pulled away gently.

“I believe you.””

She began crying again.

“But I need you to understand something. Emily didn't just worry about Andrew. She worried about the people he could influence.””

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?””

My mother stood and walked toward the cabinet.

She removed a small box.

Inside were several old photographs and envelopes.

She picked up one photograph.

It showed Emily standing beside a young woman at a charity event.

The woman had long dark hair.

A familiar smile.

Vanessa.

On the back, Emily had written:

The woman Andrew introduced as his future business partner.

I stared at the photograph.

“Future business partner?””

My mother nodded.

“Emily said Vanessa had been asking questions about the family trust.””

My hands went cold.

That meant Vanessa hadn't discovered Lily's inheritance after marrying me.

She may have known about it before she entered my life.

I picked up the photograph.

On the back, beneath the first sentence, Emily had written something else.

If she ever becomes part of Daniel's household, check the trust records immediately.

I looked at my mother.

She was crying.

“I'm sorry,” she whispered.

I couldn't speak.

My phone vibrated.

An email from Rebecca.

*Subject: Final Attachment — Urgent Review Required.*

I opened it.

The attachment contained the full agreement and an additional handwritten page.

I scrolled to the final paragraph.

Emily had written:

I do not believe Vanessa understands the full implications of the arrangement. But if she ever enters Daniel's family, I want him to know that her connection to Andrew predates this agreement.

I read the sentence again.

Then I noticed the date.

It was written six months before Emily died.

My mind raced.

Vanessa had known about Lily's inheritance before I met her.

But the final line was even more disturbing.

Andrew told me he would eventually marry someone close to Daniel if that was the only way to regain access to the family assets.

I stared at the screen.

My mother covered her mouth.

“No…”

I read it again.

Andrew hadn't simply used Vanessa after our marriage.

He might have helped place her in my life.

And then my phone rang.

It was Vanessa.

I answered.

Her voice was trembling.

“Daniel, I need to tell you something before Andrew does.””

“What?””

“I knew about Lily's inheritance before I met you.””

I closed my eyes.

“How long?””

She started crying.

“Almost three years.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Why did you marry me?””

There was a long silence.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Because Andrew told me that if I became your wife, I could finally get the money he believed belonged to his family.””

I couldn't move.

But before I could respond, she added something that changed the meaning of everything.

“Daniel, I didn't know Andrew was planning to hurt Lily. I thought he only wanted the inheritance.””

I looked at the photograph in my hand.

“Vanessa, you knew what you were doing.””

“I know.””

“And you still went shopping without buying my daughter anything.””

She sobbed.

“I know.””

I ended the call.

For the first time, I understood that the woman I had married might have entered my life with a plan.

But I also understood something else.

May you like

If Emily had anticipated this years before it happened, she must have left one final protection for Lily.

And the next morning, Rebecca would finally show me what it was.
