Chapter 1: The Door Nobody Wanted Opened
“OPEN IT! PLEASE! BEN IS IN THERE!””
My daughter was pounding on the bathroom door so hard that her tiny fists had turned red.
I heard her screaming before I reached the bottom of the staircase.
And when I finally saw what was happening in that hallway, I realized something was terribly wrong.
The polished wooden floor reflected the warm ceiling lights. At the end of the hallway stood the white bathroom door, locked from the outside. Water was already seeping beneath it, spreading across the floorboards in a thin, shining stream.
My six-year-old daughter, Lily, stood barefoot in her pink pajamas, crying so hard she could barely breathe.
“Open the door!”” she screamed again, pounding with both hands.
“Ben! Mommy, open it!””
My wife, Vanessa, stood between her and the bathroom.
Dressed entirely in black, with her dark hair pulled into a neat bun, Vanessa looked strangely composed.
Too composed.
“Lily, stop that nonsense,” she said, catching our daughter's wrist.
“You're making a scene.””
“BEN IS IN THERE!””
“I told you to go downstairs.””
“He can't get out!””
Vanessa tightened her grip.
“Don't make me tell you again.””
Lily tried to pull away, but Vanessa shoved her backward.
My daughter lost her balance.
Her little body hit the polished wooden floor, and she landed sitting against the hallway wall.
For one second, she didn't cry.
She just stared at Vanessa.
Then her face crumpled.
“Daddy!””
I was halfway down the stairs when I saw her.
“What is going on?””
Vanessa immediately turned toward me.
“Finally. Your daughter has been throwing another tantrum. She's been trying to break the bathroom door.””
I looked at Lily.
She was trembling, her pink pajama sleeves soaked with tears.
“Daddy, Ben is inside!””
I glanced at the bathroom.
Water.
There was water spreading across the hallway.
“What's happening in there?””
Vanessa folded her arms.
“Nothing. The bathtub overflowed. I was handling it.””
“Then why is the door locked?””
“Because the latch is stuck.””
I stared at her.
“Where's Ben?””
Vanessa sighed as if I had asked the most ridiculous question in the world.
“Your son is fine. He's probably playing.””
Lily shook her head violently.
“No! He's not playing!””
I rushed toward her.
“Sweetheart, tell me exactly what happened.””
She grabbed my trouser leg.
“Mommy put Ben in the bathtub. Then she closed the door. I heard him calling me.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Lily, that's enough.””
But Lily continued.
“He said he couldn't stand up. Then I heard water!””
My stomach dropped.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Why didn't you open the door?””
“I just told you. The latch is stuck.””
“Then why haven't you called someone?””
“Because I can fix it!””
I took another step toward the bathroom.
Vanessa moved directly into my path.
“Daniel, don't.””
I stopped.
“What?””
“You're going to destroy the door over a little water?””
Behind her, Lily was scrambling to her feet.
“Daddy, please!””
Then came a sound from inside.
Three faint knocks.
Not loud.
Not strong.
Three desperate little taps.
My blood turned cold.
“Ben?””
I pressed my ear against the door.
“Ben! Can you hear me?””
Nothing.
Then a tiny sound.
“Dad…”
I didn't wait for another word.
I grabbed the handle and twisted.
It wouldn't move.
I pulled harder.
The metal latch rattled.
“Vanessa, get out of the way.””
“Daniel, you're overreacting.””
“MOVE!””
She didn't.
I shoved past her, grabbed the handle with both hands, and slammed my shoulder into the door.
Once.
Twice.
The wood groaned.
On the third attempt, the latch snapped with a sharp crack.
The door flew inward.
Water rushed over my shoes.
The bathroom looked like a nightmare.
The white tiles were covered in water. A bathmat floated near the sink. The bathtub faucet was still running, sending a steady stream into a tub that had already overflowed.
And there, beneath the terrible confusion of splashing water and overturned bath toys, was my four-year-old son.
Ben.
He was wearing his blue pajamas.
His small body was slumped in the bathtub.
“BEN!””
I lunged forward.
My knees hit the wet floor.
I reached into the tub and lifted him immediately, keeping his face above the water.
His head fell against my shoulder.
“Ben! Buddy! Look at Daddy!””
His face was pale, but he was conscious.
A faint breath escaped his lips.
Then another.
“Move, let me get him!””
I shouted toward the doorway as I struggled to stand.
Lily appeared behind me.
“Ben!””
“Stay back, sweetheart!””
I carried him into the hallway, water dripping from his blue pajamas and onto the wooden floor.
“Vanessa! Get a towel!””
My wife stood in the bathroom doorway.
She wasn't moving.
She wasn't even looking at Ben.
She was staring at the broken latch.
“VANESSA!””
That finally made her move.
She hurried toward the linen closet and returned with a large white towel.
I wrapped Ben in it, supporting his head while checking that he continued breathing.
“Come on, buddy. Stay with me.””
Lily dropped beside us.
“Ben? It's me. It's Lily.””
She touched his little hand.
His fingers moved.
“Daddy…”
I bent closer.
“I'm here, son.””
“Cold…”
My throat tightened.
“I know. I've got you.””
Then he began coughing.
I held him securely as Lily started crying again, this time with relief.
But something was happening behind us.
Lily had stopped looking at her brother.
She was staring at Vanessa.
Her expression had changed.
The fear was still there, but beneath it was something else.
Anger.
She slowly stood up.
Then she pointed directly at our mother.
“You knew.””
Vanessa blinked.
“What?””
“You knew Ben was inside.””
The hallway went silent.
I looked at Lily.
Then at my wife.
“Lily,” Vanessa said sharply, “don't you dare.””
But my daughter didn't lower her finger.
“You heard him crying. I told you he was inside. You told me to be quiet.””
I felt my arms tighten around Ben.
I turned toward Vanessa.
“Is that true?””
She opened her mouth.
No words came out.
And for the first time since I had married her, I looked at my wife and didn't recognize the person standing in front of me.
Because the woman in black wasn't frightened that our son had almost drowned.
May you like
She was frightened that our daughter had started talking.
And I was about to discover why.
