Chapter 6: The Secret Behind the Birth Certificate

I took the folder back to Ben's room.

Michael remained downstairs under hospital security supervision while I tried to understand what I had just seen.

The papers felt heavier than they should have.

I had spent four years believing I knew everything about my son.

His first word.

His first steps.

His first birthday cake.

His favorite cartoon.

I had held him through fevers and nightmares.

I had painted his bedroom blue because he said it looked like the sky.

And now a stranger had placed a document in front of me suggesting that the foundation of my family had been built on a lie.

When I entered the room, Lily immediately looked up.

“Daddy?””

I forced a smile.

“Hey, sweetheart.””

Ben was awake.

He was drawing on a hospital notepad with a blue crayon.

He held it up.

“Look.””

It was a picture of our house.

There were three people standing outside.

Me.

Lily.

Ben.

Then, in the corner, he had drawn a fourth person.

A woman wearing black.

I sat beside him.

“That's a nice picture.””

Ben pointed at the woman.

“That's Mommy.””

I nodded.

“Are you going to draw anyone else?””

He shook his head.

“Just us.””

My chest tightened.

I kissed his forehead.

Then I called my lawyer, Jonathan Pierce.

He answered immediately.

“Daniel, I heard there was an incident.””

“It's worse than I thought.””

I explained the situation.

The video.

The messages.

The photograph.

The documents Michael had shown me.

Jonathan listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he exhaled slowly.

“Do not sign anything.””

“I wasn't planning to.””

“And don't hand over the original tablet or documents to anyone without documenting the transfer.””

“Understood.””

“Have the hospital preserve the medical records. Make sure the video is copied securely. We also need to establish whether those guardianship documents are genuine.””

“What about the paternity test?””

“Don't assume anything based on a photocopy. We'll need to verify the laboratory and obtain lawful independent testing if appropriate.””

I looked at Ben.

“Jonathan, there's something else.””

“What?””

“My wife has been threatening to have him transferred to another man.””

Silence.

Then Jonathan said, “I'm going to contact the relevant authorities and prepare an urgent application concerning the children's safety.””

“Do it.””

“Daniel, I need you to understand something. A biological connection isn't the only thing that matters in a custody proceeding. Your relationship with Ben, the children's safety, and the evidence surrounding what happened will all be relevant.””

I nodded.

“Whatever it takes.””

After the call, I sat beside my children.

For a while, neither of them spoke.

Then Lily leaned toward me.

“Daddy, are we still a family?””

I looked at her.

“Of course we are.””

“Even if Mommy did something bad?””

I brushed a strand of hair from her face.

“Even when grown-ups make terrible decisions, you and Ben are still loved.””

She nodded slowly.

Then she asked the question I had been avoiding.

“Are you going to stop being Ben's daddy?””

I felt something break inside me.

I pulled both children into my arms.

“Never.””

Ben wrapped his little arms around my neck.

“Promise?””

“Promise.””

For the first time that morning, I cried.

Not loudly.

Just enough for my children to feel the tears against their hair.

At noon, Jonathan arrived with another attorney and a hospital social worker.

They reviewed the documents and photographed every page.

One of the papers contained a reference to an old private guardianship arrangement.

Another listed the name of a medical facility where Ben had supposedly been born.

Jonathan pointed to it.

“This is important.””

“Why?””

“Because the facility closed several years ago. If these records are genuine, there may be archived documentation.””

I stared at him.

“Can we get it?””

“We can make the appropriate requests.””

The second attorney examined the paternity report.

“There's a problem here.””

I leaned forward.

“What?””

“The report lists a sample collection date, but the laboratory identification number appears inconsistent with the format used by the named facility.””

Jonathan frowned.

“Meaning?””

“It could be an altered document. We need confirmation directly from the laboratory.””

I felt a strange mixture of relief and fear.

If the document was fake, perhaps the entire story Michael had told me was false.

But if it was real…

I looked at the photograph again.

The baby with Ben's birthmark.

The baby whose face I had never seen before that night.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

*You have until midnight to return the original documents.*

A second message arrived.

*Your wife has already made her decision. Don't make us change ours.*

I showed Jonathan.

He immediately photographed the screen.

“Don't respond.””

I nodded.

Then another message appeared.

This time, it contained a photograph.

Lily and Ben.

Taken inside the hospital room.

I looked up so quickly that my chair fell backward.

“Who took this?””

The social worker rushed toward me.

“What happened?””

I showed her.

Her face changed.

She immediately called hospital security.

Within minutes, officers arrived and began reviewing the corridor cameras.

I stood beside my children.

“I'm not leaving them.””

“No one is asking you to,” Jonathan said.

Then an officer entered.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes?””

“We've identified the person who took the photograph.””

“Who?””

The officer hesitated.

“Your wife.””

I felt the room spin.

“Vanessa?””

He nodded.

“She entered the hospital earlier using a visitor pass registered under her name.””

“Where is she now?””

“She left approximately twenty minutes ago.””

I looked at the clock.

She had been here.

She had stood somewhere outside the room.

Watching our children.

I felt anger rising in my chest, but Jonathan placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Daniel. Stay calm. We need to handle this properly.””

I nodded.

Then Lily spoke.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

She was pointing at the hospital television.

The screen showed a local news bulletin.

A photograph of Vanessa appeared beside a headline.

*LOCAL WOMAN SOUGHT IN CONNECTION WITH PRIVATE CHILD-GUARDIANSHIP DISPUTE.*

I stared at it.

The report mentioned an investigation into fraudulent identity records and disputed guardianship documents.

My phone rang.

This time, the caller ID displayed Vanessa's name.

I answered on speaker.

“Daniel?””

Her voice sounded different.

No anger.

No irritation.

Just exhaustion.

“Where are you, Vanessa?””

“Listen to me. You need to bring the children home.””

“No.””

“You don't understand what is happening.””

“Then explain it.””

She began crying.

“I never wanted Ben to get hurt.””

I closed my eyes.

“Then why did you leave him in that bathtub?””

“I was trying to protect him.””

“From what?””

She sobbed.

“From the truth.””

I gripped the phone.

“What truth?””

For several seconds, there was only breathing.

Then she whispered:

“Ben isn't the only child whose identity I changed.””

I looked toward Lily.

My daughter was watching me.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“It means you need to check Lily's birth certificate.””

I felt my blood turn cold.

“What are you talking about?””

She started crying harder.

“Daniel, I swear I was going to tell you. But when Michael came back, everything changed.””

“Who is Michael really?””

“He isn't the man you think he is.””

I looked at Jonathan.

He had stopped writing.

Vanessa continued.

“He wasn't Ben's father.””

I froze.

“Then who was?””

A long silence followed.

Then my wife said six words that shattered everything I thought I knew about my family.

“Michael is Lily's biological father.””

The call disconnected.

I stared at the phone.

Then I slowly turned toward my daughter.

Lily was still holding her stuffed rabbit.

She looked confused.

“Daddy?””

I couldn't answer.

Jonathan stepped closer.

“Daniel, don't say anything to the children until we understand what she means.””

But I wasn't listening.

Because beside Lily's hospital chair was her little pink backpack.

And sticking out of its front pocket was a folded piece of paper.

I pulled it out.

It was an old photograph.

Vanessa was holding a newborn baby.

Beside her stood Michael Grant.

On the back, someone had written a date.

And beneath it were three words.

*Our first daughter.*

I turned the photograph over again.

Then I noticed the name written beneath the date.

It wasn't Lily.

It was a name I had never heard before.

*Emily Grant.*

And suddenly, I understood why Vanessa had been so terrified of that tablet.

The bathroom incident wasn't simply about Ben.

It was about two children, two identities, and a secret that had been hidden inside my marriage for years.

But the most frightening question was still unanswered.

If Lily had originally been registered as Emily Grant, then who was the little girl I had spent six years raising?

And where was the real Emily?
