Chapter 2: My Wife Had an Answer for Everything

“Daniel, don't listen to her.””

Vanessa said it quietly.

Almost gently.

As if she were trying to calm a difficult child rather than explain why our four-year-old son had nearly died in a locked bathroom.

I held Ben against my chest.

The white towel was wrapped around his small body, and his wet hair stuck to his forehead.

He was breathing, but his eyes kept drifting closed.

I reached for my phone.

“I'm calling emergency services.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“There's no need.””

I stared at her.

“Are you serious?””

“He's coughing. That's good. He's breathing normally now.””

“You are not a doctor.””

“Daniel, please. Think about what you're doing.””

I pressed the emergency number.

“An ambulance. My son was found in a bathtub full of water. He's conscious but was struggling to breathe.””

The operator began asking questions.

I answered as best I could while keeping Ben wrapped in the towel.

Vanessa stood beside the staircase, twisting the gold wedding ring on her finger.

Lily sat on the floor next to me.

“Daddy?””

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Are you angry with me?””

I looked down.

“What? No. Why would you think that?””

“Because I broke the bathroom rule.””

I frowned.

“What bathroom rule?””

She looked toward Vanessa.

“Mommy said I wasn't allowed to touch the door.””

My wife immediately interrupted.

“Lily is confused.””

I ignored her.

“Sweetheart, tell me what happened.””

Lily swallowed.

“Ben was playing with his boats. Mommy said bath time was finished, but he wanted to stay.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“This is becoming ridiculous.””

I raised one hand.

“Let her finish.””

Lily continued.

“Mommy took the towel and went outside. Ben was still in the bathtub.””

My chest tightened.

“What happened next?””

“She closed the door.””

“Did she lock it?””

Lily nodded.

“She turned the little silver thing.””

I glanced at the broken latch.

“Then what?””

“I went to get my bunny. When I came back, I heard Ben calling me.””

Her voice cracked.

“I told Mommy.””

“What did she say?””

Lily wiped her nose with her sleeve.

“She said he was being naughty.””

Vanessa let out an irritated breath.

“That is not what I said.””

Lily looked at her.

“You said, 'He needs to learn not to scream for attention.''”

My hands went cold.

I looked at my wife.

“Did you say that?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“I was frustrated. Both children had been difficult all afternoon.””

“Frustrated?””

“Daniel, you weren't here.””

I stared at her.

“That's your explanation?””

She looked toward the ambulance operator on my phone.

“Tell them to cancel. You're frightening the children.””

I almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because I couldn't understand how someone could stand in a flooded bathroom, look at a nearly unconscious child, and still be concerned about appearances.

The operator asked another question.

I answered.

Then I heard footsteps outside.

Two paramedics entered with medical equipment.

One knelt beside Ben immediately.

“Hello, buddy. Can you hear me?””

Ben gave a tiny nod.

“Good. Can you tell me your name?””

“Ben…”

“That's right. I'm going to help you.””

The paramedic checked his breathing and began assessing him while his colleague asked me what had happened.

“He was in the bathtub,” I explained.

“The bathroom door was locked. The water had overflowed.””

“How long was he in there?””

“I don't know.””

The second paramedic looked at Vanessa.

“Who was supervising him?””

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“I was.””

The paramedic paused.

“Were you in the bathroom with him?””

“No.””

“Where were you?””

“Downstairs.””

Lily immediately shook her head.

“No, you weren't!””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“Lily.””

The paramedic glanced at my daughter.

“It's okay, sweetheart. What did you see?””

“Mommy was upstairs.””

Vanessa turned sharply.

“She doesn't understand.””

Lily pointed toward the hallway.

“You were standing right there.””

The paramedic exchanged a look with his colleague.

I felt something inside me shift.

My wife wasn't simply denying what happened.

She was trying to control what everyone else heard.

The paramedics decided Ben needed immediate hospital assessment.

As they prepared to move him, I stood.

“I'm coming with him.””

Vanessa reached for my arm.

“Daniel, wait.””

I looked at her hand.

“Don't touch me.””

Her expression changed.

For a moment, I saw something close to genuine panic.

“You can't leave me here alone with all this.””

I stared at her.

“Our son is being taken to the hospital.””

“I know that!””

“Then why are you talking about yourself?””

She lowered her voice.

“Because people are going to misunderstand what happened.””

I looked toward the broken bathroom door.

“Then tell me what happened.””

“I already explained.””

“No. You gave me excuses.””

She glanced at Lily.

“Your daughter is exaggerating.””

I leaned closer.

“She's six years old. She was terrified because she thought her brother was going to die.””

Vanessa's lips tightened.

“And you think I'm not upset?””

I looked at her eyes.

There were no tears.

No trembling.

No desperate questions about Ben's condition.

Just irritation.

The paramedic called me.

“Sir, we need to leave.””

I followed them outside.

Lily grabbed my hand.

“Daddy, can I come?””

I crouched.

“Of course.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“She's staying here.””

I slowly stood.

“She's coming with me.””

“You can't take both children without discussing it with me.””

I looked at her.

“Watch me.””

For a second, neither of us moved.

Then Lily slipped behind my leg.

Vanessa pointed at her.

“Lily, come here. Now.””

My daughter shook her head.

“I'm going with Daddy.””

“Lily!””

She flinched.

I stepped between them.

“Don't shout at her.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“You're making a terrible mistake, Daniel.””

I didn't answer.

I helped Lily into the ambulance and climbed in beside Ben.

As the doors closed, I looked through the small rear window.

Vanessa stood at the top of the front steps.

Her black clothes were perfectly dry.

Her hair was still neatly arranged.

She watched the ambulance pull away without waving.

Lily leaned against my arm.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Mommy told me not to tell you.””

I turned toward her.

“Tell me what?””

She looked down at her pink pajamas.

“About the key.””

My heart began pounding again.

“What key, sweetheart?””

“The little silver key Mommy put in her pocket.””

I stared at her.

“Which key?””

“The bathroom key.””

I looked back toward our house as it disappeared behind the ambulance.

Our bathroom door didn't have a key.

It had a privacy latch.

A simple thumb-turn lock that could be opened from the inside.

Unless someone had deliberately jammed it.

Unless someone had used something to stop it from turning.

I looked at the paramedic.

“Can I ask you something?””

“Of course.””

“If a bathroom latch is locked from the outside, can someone prevent it from opening?””

He nodded cautiously.

“Depending on the lock, yes. But we'd need to examine it.””

I swallowed.

Then Lily spoke again.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

She was staring at the towel covering Ben.

“Mommy said Ben wouldn't be here much longer.””

The ambulance seemed to grow smaller around me.

“What?””

Lily's voice became almost a whisper.

“She said after tonight, everything would be different.””

I looked at my daughter.

“Did she say why?””

Lily nodded slowly.

“She said we would finally have a quiet house.””

My stomach dropped.

Before I could ask another question, Ben began coughing again.

The paramedic turned toward him.

I held my son's hand and tried to breathe.

But my mind was no longer in the ambulance.

It was back in that hallway.

Back at the bathroom door.

Back at the woman who had stood between my daughter and the only thing that could save her brother.

And suddenly, one question was louder than everything else.

Why had Vanessa wanted that door to stay closed?
