Chapter 5: The Man Waiting Outside the Hospital

I didn't sleep that night.

Every time someone walked past Ben's hospital room, I looked up.

Every time the elevator opened, I checked the faces.

The social worker helped arrange additional security precautions, and the hospital documented the messages I had received.

At 6:40 the next morning, a nurse entered with Ben's breakfast.

He was doing better.

He could sit up, drink water, and speak in short sentences.

But he still became frightened whenever someone mentioned going home.

I sat beside his bed.

“Would you like some toast?””

He shook his head.

“Can I have pancakes?””

I smiled.

“Pancakes?””

“With chocolate.””

I laughed softly.

“That's a very specific medical request.””

Lily giggled from the other chair.

For a few minutes, we almost felt like a normal family again.

Then my phone rang.

The caller ID showed an unfamiliar number.

I answered.

“Hello?””

A man's voice responded.

“Daniel Carter?””

“Who's asking?””

“Michael Grant.””

I stood immediately.

The name Rebecca had mentioned.

“Why are you calling me?””

“Because I think you've been given some very misleading information.””

I looked toward Ben.

“Where did you get my number?””

“Your wife.””

My jaw tightened.

“What do you want?””

“To meet.””

“No.””

“Daniel, there's something you need to understand about Benjamin.””

“I understand enough. He is my son.””

Michael was silent.

Then he said, “You should ask Vanessa about the day he was born.””

I felt my stomach twist.

“I'm not interested in your games.””

“Then perhaps you're not interested in knowing why she has been so desperate to keep you from seeing those documents.””

I lowered my voice.

“Where are you?””

“Outside the hospital.””

I turned toward the window.

A black sedan was parked near the main entrance.

A man stood beside it, holding a phone.

He was watching the building.

“Stay there,” I said.

“I wasn't planning to leave.””

I ended the call.

Then I contacted hospital security and told them about the man.

Within minutes, two security officers were near the entrance.

I watched from the corridor as they approached him.

Michael didn't resist.

He simply handed one of them an identification card and pointed toward the hospital.

Then he looked directly at the window.

At me.

And smiled.

I hated that smile.

Not because it was threatening.

Because it looked familiar.

Like someone who believed he already knew how the story would end.

Ten minutes later, a security officer approached me.

“Mr. Carter?””

“Yes?””

“The gentleman downstairs says he has information regarding your family.””

“I don't want him near my children.””

“Understood. He has agreed to wait in the public reception area while we establish whether there's any reason to involve the authorities.””

I nodded.

Then I turned toward Ben's room.

“Lily, stay with your brother. Don't leave the room unless the nurse comes with you.””

She nodded.

“Where are you going?””

“To talk to someone.””

“Is it the man with the black car?””

I stopped.

“How do you know?””

Lily looked toward the window.

“I saw him.””

I crouched.

“When?””

“Before Ben went into the bathroom.””

My heart began pounding.

“Did you see him outside?””

She shook her head.

“He was inside our house.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“He came through the front door. Mommy told me to go upstairs.””

I swallowed.

“What did he say?””

“I don't know. But he gave Mommy an envelope.””

I felt the room tilt.

“Did you hear anything else?””

Lily nodded.

“Mommy said, 'Not until Daniel signs.''”

I slowly stood.

“What was he supposed to sign?””

“I don't know.””

I looked at Ben.

He was watching us.

Then he spoke.

“The man said he wanted me.””

I turned toward him.

“What do you mean, buddy?””

Ben pulled the blanket closer.

“He said I had to go with him.””

My throat tightened.

“Did Mommy say that?””

Ben nodded.

“She said it was better.””

I kissed his forehead.

“Stay here with your sister.””

I walked toward the reception area.

Michael was sitting at a small table.

He wore a charcoal suit, a white shirt, and a silver watch.

A leather folder rested beside his coffee.

He stood when he saw me.

“Daniel.””

“Don't call me that like we're friends.””

He sat again.

“Fair enough.””

I remained standing.

“What do you want?””

He opened the folder.

Inside were several documents.

One had Vanessa's signature.

Another had a photograph of a newborn baby.

The date at the top was twelve months before my wedding.

I looked at him.

“Explain.””

Michael folded his hands.

“Vanessa and I were together before she met you.””

“I know that much.””

“We had a child.””

I stared at him.

“What happened?””

“He was placed under temporary guardianship after Vanessa experienced a serious personal crisis.””

“Where?””

Michael slid a document across the table.

The name on it was Benjamin Reed.

I felt my fingers go numb.

“That isn't my son's name.””

“Not originally.””

I stared at the photograph.

The baby had a tiny birthmark near his left ear.

I knew that mark.

Ben had the same one.

I looked up.

“Why did Vanessa tell me she gave birth to Ben?””

Michael hesitated.

“Because she did.””

I frowned.

“Then what are you saying?””

He leaned forward.

“Vanessa was pregnant when she met you. She told you the baby was yours because she wanted a family and believed you would accept the child.””

I stared at him.

“That doesn't make any sense. Ben was born after our wedding.””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

I waited.

Then he said, “But the date on his original medical record is different from the date on his birth certificate.””

The room seemed to grow smaller.

I looked down at the document.

There was a hospital name.

A registration number.

And a date.

I couldn't process it.

“Why would she change his birthday?””

“Because the original records connected him to a guardianship agreement she didn't want you to discover.””

I stared at him.

“Did you give her the child?””

Michael's expression changed.

“No. Vanessa gave birth to him. But she and I had agreed that he would be placed with another family temporarily.””

“Why?””

“Because we weren't ready to raise him.””

“And then?””

“She changed her mind.””

I stared at the document.

“Why didn't she tell me?””

Michael looked toward the corridor.

“Because she wanted you to believe Ben was your biological son.””

I swallowed.

“Is he?””

Michael didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he opened another section of the folder.

A document with a laboratory logo was visible.

He pushed it toward me.

“That's why I came.””

I looked at the paper.

At the names.

At the date.

At the words that made my heart hammer against my ribs.

PATERNITY TEST RESULT.

I couldn't move.

“Who ordered this?””

“Vanessa.””

“When?””

“Three months ago.””

I looked up.

“Why?””

Michael's voice dropped.

“Because she wanted to know whether you were still legally connected to Ben before she signed the transfer papers.””

I felt sick.

“What transfer papers?””

He took a second document from the folder.

It contained a section titled CONSENT TO CHANGE OF GUARDIANSHIP.

My wife's signature was at the bottom.

And beside it was another signature.

Michael Grant.

I pushed the document away.

“I'm not signing anything.””

Michael shook his head.

“You're misunderstanding me. I didn't ask you to sign.””

“Then why are you here?””

He looked directly into my eyes.

“Because Vanessa has already signed.””

I stared at him.

“Signed what?””

“The agreement transferring Benjamin to me.””

For a moment, I couldn't hear anything.

Then I stood so quickly my chair scraped across the floor.

“You're not taking my son.””

Michael didn't move.

“Daniel, the agreement is not valid without the necessary legal process. But Vanessa has been preparing this for months.””

“Why would she do that?””

He looked down.

“Because she owes someone a very large amount of money.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“Someone who has been threatening to expose her past.””

“Who?””

Michael closed the folder.

“I don't know his real name.””

I stepped closer.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I expect you to look at the last page.””

I opened the folder again.

There was a photograph attached to a financial statement.

A man standing beside a black car.

He was wearing a dark coat.

His face was partially turned away.

But I recognized him.

Not from the photograph Rebecca had sent.

Not from the hospital.

From my own home.

He had been standing outside the bathroom the previous afternoon.

And beneath his picture was a handwritten note:

*FINAL PAYMENT DUE BEFORE THE CHILD IS COLLECTED.*

I looked at Michael.

“Who is this man?””

Michael's face had gone pale.

Then he whispered:

“That's the person Vanessa has been paying to keep Ben's original identity secret.””
