Chapter 3: The Recording on My Daughter's Tablet
The hospital smelled like disinfectant, burnt coffee, and fear.
I sat beside Ben's bed while a monitor beeped steadily beside him.
He was warm now.
A nurse had changed his wet blue pajamas into a hospital gown, and a soft blanket covered his legs.
The doctors had taken his condition seriously because of the possibility of water inhalation.
I didn't care how long we had to stay.
I only wanted him breathing.
Lily sat in a chair beside me, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
She hadn't spoken much since we arrived.
Every time a nurse entered the room, she looked toward the door as if expecting Vanessa to appear.
At around nine that evening, Ben opened his eyes.
“Daddy?””
I immediately leaned forward.
“Hey, buddy.””
“Where's Mommy?””
I felt Lily go still.
I gently brushed his hair away from his forehead.
“Mommy is at home right now.””
“Did I do bad?””
The question nearly broke me.
“No, son. You didn't do anything wrong.””
Ben stared at the ceiling.
“I didn't want the bath.””
I swallowed.
“Why didn't you want the bath?””
He moved his little fingers beneath the blanket.
“Mommy said I had to.””
Lily looked up.
“Ben, don't.””
I turned toward her.
“What is it, sweetheart?””
She squeezed her rabbit.
“Mommy said we weren't supposed to talk about bath time.””
I looked at my son.
“Ben, you can tell Daddy anything. You're not in trouble.””
He hesitated.
Then he whispered something that made the room feel colder.
“Mommy turned the water on.””
I went completely still.
“What did you say?””
“She turned it on.””
“Did she help you get into the bathtub?””
Ben nodded.
“Then she went out.””
“Did you call her?””
He nodded again.
“Many times.””
I looked at Lily.
She was crying silently.
Ben continued.
“I wanted Daddy.””
I took his hand.
“I'm here, buddy.””
He looked at me.
“Mommy said Daddy was busy.””
My throat tightened.
Then his eyes drifted shut.
The nurse entered a moment later and asked us to let him rest.
I stepped into the hallway.
Lily followed.
“Daddy?””
I crouched.
“What's wrong?””
She looked toward Ben's room.
“I have something.””
She reached into the pocket of her pink pajama pants.
Her fingers pulled out a small tablet.
It was the inexpensive blue one I had bought her for her birthday.
“What is that?””
“My tablet.””
“I know, sweetheart. Why did you bring it?””
She hesitated.
“Because Mommy doesn't know.””
I looked at her.
“Doesn't know what?””
Lily pressed the power button.
The screen lit up.
There was a small video thumbnail in the corner.
“I was playing with my toys,” she explained.
“Then I heard Ben crying. I put the tablet on the shelf.””
My heart started beating faster.
“Were you recording?””
She nodded.
“I wanted to show you because Mommy said I was making things up.””
I stared at the screen.
“Can I see it?””
Lily nodded.
I took the tablet carefully.
The recording was a little crooked. Most of the image showed the hallway from the height of a child's toy shelf.
The bathroom door was visible.
And so was Vanessa.
I pressed play.
At first, there was only the sound of running water.
Then Vanessa entered the frame.
She was wearing the same black clothes.
She carried a towel and placed it on the small cabinet outside the bathroom.
Ben's voice came from inside.
“Mommy?””
Vanessa answered.
“Stay in the tub.””
“I want out.””
“Just a minute.””
The recording continued.
Vanessa looked down the hallway.
Then she reached toward the bathroom door.
I leaned closer.
Her hand moved near the latch.
There was a small metallic click.
She stepped backward.
Ben called again.
“Mommy?””
Vanessa looked toward the staircase.
Then she walked away.
I stopped breathing.
The video continued.
Thirty seconds passed.
Then a minute.
Ben's voice became louder.
“Mommy! The water!””
I looked at the time stamp.
The recording was almost four minutes long.
Vanessa returned to the hallway.
She stood directly outside the bathroom.
She heard Ben.
I could see her listening.
“Mommy, help!””
She glanced toward the stairs.
Then she spoke.
“Stop screaming, Ben.””
My fingers tightened around the tablet.
“Mommy!””
“Your sister is going to hear you.””
A few seconds passed.
Then Ben began crying.
Vanessa looked toward the camera's position.
For one terrifying moment, I thought she had noticed it.
Instead, she bent down and picked up a small silver object from the floor.
A key.
She slipped it into her pocket.
Then she walked away.
I stopped the video.
My mouth was dry.
I replayed the last few seconds.
There was no confusion.
No accidental misunderstanding.
She had heard him.
She had stood outside the door while he begged for help.
And she had walked away.
“Daddy?””
I looked at Lily.
She was watching my face.
“Is Mommy bad?””
I didn't know how to answer that.
I pulled her gently into my arms.
“You did the right thing, sweetheart.””
“But she told me not to tell.””
“You're never in trouble for telling me when someone is hurt.””
She buried her face against my shoulder.
“I was scared.””
“I know.””
“I thought Ben was going to disappear.””
I closed my eyes.
“He's not going anywhere.””
I held her until her breathing slowed.
Then I returned to Ben's room and showed the recording to the nurse.
She immediately called the attending physician.
Within minutes, the hospital's social worker arrived.
She listened carefully as I explained what Lily had witnessed and watched the recording.
Her expression became serious.
“Mr. Carter, we need to make sure both children are safe.””
I nodded.
“I understand.””
“Has your wife been informed that you have this recording?””
“No.””
“Please don't confront her about it yet. We need to preserve the original video and follow the appropriate reporting procedures.””
I agreed.
For the first time that evening, I felt like someone else understood how serious this was.
Then my phone vibrated.
Vanessa.
*WHERE ARE YOU?*
I didn't respond.
Another message appeared.
*You have no right to keep my children from me.*
Then another.
*Daniel, answer me.*
I turned the phone face down.
A minute later, it rang.
Her name filled the screen.
I stepped outside Ben's room and answered.
“What?””
Vanessa's voice came through immediately.
“Finally. Where are you?””
“At the hospital.””
“I know that. Which hospital?””
“Why?””
“Because I'm coming to get Lily.””
I looked through the glass panel at my daughter.
She was sitting beside Ben's bed, holding his hand.
“No.””
Silence.
Then Vanessa laughed once.
“Excuse me?””
“You heard me.””
“Daniel, stop being dramatic. This is a family matter.””
“Our son almost died.””
“He is fine now.””
“You locked him in a bathroom.””
“I did not lock him in anything.””
“I have the recording.””
Silence.
Not a gasp.
Not a question.
Just silence.
Then her voice changed.
“What recording?””
I closed my eyes.
“The one Lily made.””
A long pause followed.
Then Vanessa said something I would remember for the rest of my life.
“You shouldn't have let her keep that tablet.””
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?””
She ignored the question.
“Daniel, listen carefully. Bring the tablet home. Delete the video. We can discuss everything privately.””
I stared at the hospital wall.
“Why?””
“Because you don't understand what you're dealing with.””
“Then explain it.””
“Not over the phone.””
“Explain it now.””
Her breathing became heavier.
Then she whispered:
“Daniel, if that video gets out, you'll lose more than your marriage.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What are you talking about?””
She didn't answer.
Instead, she hung up.
I stood there holding the phone.
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
Then another notification appeared.
It wasn't from Vanessa.
It was an email.
The sender's name was unfamiliar, but the subject line made my heart stop.
*URGENT: Regarding the incident at your home tonight.*
I opened it.
There was one sentence.
Mr. Carter, your wife is not the only person who has been asking questions about Ben.
Below it was an attachment.
A photograph.
I tapped it.

And what I saw made me realize that the bathroom incident might not have been the beginning of the nightmare.
It might have been the reason someone had been waiting for it to happen.
