Chapter 8: The Woman Who Sold Her Own Secret

Jonathan refused to let me go anywhere alone.

“It's obviously a trap,” he said.

We were standing outside the consultation room while officers prepared to investigate the phone call.

“I know.””

“Then why are you considering it?””

“Because that little girl called me Daddy.””

Jonathan looked at me.

“And if Vanessa wants you to walk into an ambush, you could end up unable to help either child.””

I knew he was right.

But the thought of Emily sitting somewhere, frightened and waiting, was unbearable.

The authorities agreed to arrange a controlled meeting at the abandoned maternity clinic.

I would not enter alone.

Officers would remain nearby, and every communication would be documented.

Before leaving the hospital, I returned to Ben and Lily.

Ben was sleeping.

Lily was drawing beside him.

She had drawn our house again.

This time, there were four people.

Me.

Ben.

Herself.

And a woman standing far away from the others.

“Who's that?”” I asked.

Lily looked at the drawing.

“Mommy.””

I sat beside her.

“Why is she so far away?””

“Because she doesn't live with us anymore.””

I brushed her hair back.

“You don't have to decide anything today.””

She looked up.

“Daddy, if I'm not your real daughter, can I still call you Daddy?””

I felt my throat close.

“Lily, listen to me.””

I took both her hands.

“You don't have to earn that word. You don't have to share my blood. You don't have to prove anything.””

Her eyes filled.

“You're my daughter.””

She threw her arms around my neck.

I held her for a long time.

Then I whispered, “I'll be back soon.””

At 8:30 p.m., we arrived at the old maternity clinic.

The building stood behind a row of closed shops.

Its windows were dark.

A faded sign still hung above the entrance.

The letters were barely visible.

Jonathan waited in an unmarked vehicle nearby, while the officers positioned themselves around the building.

I carried the photograph in my jacket.

The front door was unlocked.

Inside, the air smelled of dust and damp plaster.

A single light was burning in the reception area.

Vanessa stood beside the old registration desk.

She was wearing a gray sweater and black trousers.

Her hair was loose.

She looked exhausted.

When she saw me, she started crying.

“Daniel.””

I stopped several feet away.

“Where is Emily?””

She wiped her face.

“You came.””

“Where is she?””

“She's safe.””

“That's not an answer.””

Vanessa looked down.

“I never wanted things to become like this.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Your son nearly died in a bathtub, Vanessa. Your daughter is apparently somewhere with strangers. And you're standing here telling me you never wanted things to become like this?””

She flinched.

“I know what happened with Ben was terrible.””

“Terrible?””

“I was under pressure.””

“You left him behind a locked door.””

“I didn't know the water would rise that quickly.””

I stared at her.

“You heard him.””

She looked away.

“I thought he was exaggerating.””

“He was four years old!””

“I know!””

Her voice echoed through the empty clinic.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I pulled the photograph from my jacket.

“Explain this.””

Vanessa looked at it.

Her face crumpled.

“Where did you get that?””

“Lily's backpack.””

She reached for it.

I pulled it away.

“Don't.””

She lowered her hand.

“Emily was my first child.””

“Why did you give her away?””

“I didn't give her away.””

“Then why did Michael collect her?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Because I was young and scared.””

“You were a mother.””

“I was nineteen!””

“And what was I? A fool?””

She started crying harder.

“When I met you, I wanted a normal life. You were kind. You loved me. You never asked too many questions.””

I stared at her.

“Because I trusted you.””

“I know.””

“Did you ever intend to tell me?””

She didn't answer.

I stepped closer.

“Did you give me Lily knowing she might not be the child you claimed she was?””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Then she nodded.

The truth landed like a physical blow.

“Who is Lily?””

Vanessa sank into a chair.

“Lily is the daughter I raised with you.””

“That isn't what I asked.””

She stared at the floor.

“Emily was born first. Michael arranged a temporary placement with the Coleman family. I was supposed to sign the final guardianship papers, but I changed my mind.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted my daughter back.””

“So you took her?””

“No. Michael refused.””

I stared at her.

“Then what happened?””

Vanessa looked up.

“I became pregnant again.””

The words hung between us.

“Ben?””

She nodded.

“Michael was his biological father too.””

I felt the room tilt.

“You told me Ben was mine.””

“I thought you would leave if you knew.””

“So you lied.””

“Yes.””

“And Lily?””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“Lily was born after Ben. But there was a complication with the paperwork. Michael had already arranged for Emily to remain with the Coleman family. He told me that if I wanted to keep Ben, I had to stop asking about Emily.””

I stared at her.

“What does Lily have to do with Emily?””

Vanessa reached into her bag.

She removed another photograph.

It showed two newborn babies lying in hospital bassinets.

One had a small hospital bracelet.

The other had a matching bracelet.

My hands trembled.

“Twins?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Emily and Lily were twins.””

I couldn't speak.

She continued.

“The Coleman family believed they were adopting Emily. But Michael had arranged for the babies to be separated immediately after birth. Lily was brought to me.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted to keep one of them.””

I looked at the photograph.

Two babies.

Two identical bracelets.

Two lives separated before either child could speak.

“You let me believe Lily was biologically mine.””

Vanessa nodded.

“And you let another family raise her sister.””

“I thought it was temporary.””

“Six years!””

“I know!””

She began sobbing.

I stepped away.

Then I asked the question that mattered most.

“Where is Emily now?””

Vanessa looked toward the back hallway.

“Michael knows.””

I stared at her.

“You said she was safe.””

“She was.””

“Was?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“Michael moved her after he found out you were asking questions.””

My blood turned cold.

“Where?””

“I don't know.””

“Don't lie to me.””

“I'm not!””

I grabbed the edge of the desk.

“Then why did you bring me here?””

Vanessa looked up.

“Because I wanted to tell you the truth before he did.””

I stared at her.

“Why now?””

She reached into her bag and pulled out a document.

It was a signed statement.

At the top was the name of a private financial company.

Below it were several payments.

The total was nearly half a million dollars.

“Michael was blackmailing me,” she said.

I looked at the figures.

“What did you do?””

“I borrowed money. I paid him. I signed agreements.””

“For what?””

“To keep the children together.””

I laughed without humor.

“You kept them together by separating them?””

Vanessa lowered her head.

Then she said something I hadn't expected.

“Michael wasn't the person who arranged the separation.””

I stared at her.

“Who was?””

She looked directly at me.

“Your mother.””

The room went silent.

“My mother is dead.””

“I know.””

“She never met you until after we were married.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No, Daniel. She knew me long before that.””

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa slid another document across the desk.

It contained an old photograph of my mother standing beside a woman holding two newborn babies.

My mother was smiling.

And beneath the photograph was a handwritten note:

*The Carter family will take one child. The other will remain with the Grants.*

I stared at the handwriting.

I recognized it.

It was my mother's.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“Your mother paid Michael to make sure you married me.””

Before I could respond, a loud crash came from the back of the clinic.

Vanessa jumped.

I turned.

A door slammed.

Someone was running.

I rushed toward the hallway, but Jonathan's voice came through my earpiece.

“Daniel, stop! We have movement outside!””

I froze.

Then my phone vibrated.

A new message.

Unknown number.

*You found the truth. Now come find your daughter.*

Attached was a live photograph.

Emily was sitting in the back seat of a black car.

Her hands were trembling.

May you like

And the man beside her was smiling at the camera.

It was Michael.
