Chapter 12: The House Under the Hill
The old road was barely visible.
No streetlights.
No houses.
Just trees and darkness.
Detective Harris drove.
I sat beside him.
Elena sat in the back with Isaiah and Zoe.
Nobody talked.
Because everyone knew we were driving toward something none of us wanted to find.
The address came from an old property record.
A piece of land my father purchased years ago.
A place nobody in the family knew existed.
Except apparently everyone did.
Except me.
When we arrived, the house looked abandoned.
Small.
Old.
Almost forgotten.
But the closer I got, the more familiar it felt.
I had been here.
Somewhere in my memory.
A flash.
A child.
Running.
A man shouting.
Then nothing.
“Andre?””
Elena’s voice pulled me back.
“What?””
“You okay?””
I looked at the house.
“No.””
Detective Harris approached the front door.
“Stay behind me.””
The lock was already broken.
Someone had been here.
Inside, the air smelled like dust and old paper.
The walls were covered with photographs.
Not decorations.
Evidence.
My family.
My childhood.
My marriage.
My children.
I stepped closer.
“This is insane.””
Detective Harris looked around.
“Someone was watching you.””
I touched a photograph.
It was me and Elena.
Before we got married.
“Why?””
Elena whispered:
“Because your father wanted control.””
We moved deeper into the house.
Then I saw it.
A room.
A desk.
A wall covered with files.
Detective Harris opened one.
Then another.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He didn’t answer.
I walked closer.
“What did you find?””
He turned the folder around.
My name was on it.
Inside were pages of notes.
My habits.
My schedule.
My weaknesses.
My father had documented me.
Like I was an experiment.
Elena found another file.
She opened it.
Then froze.
“What?””
She handed it to me.
The first page had one sentence.
*PLAN FAILED: ANDRE CHOSE ELENA.*
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
Elena’s hands shook.
“It means…”
She stopped.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“Your father didn’t just want money.””
I waited.
“He wanted me gone.””
A sound came from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Detective Harris reached for his weapon.
“Who’s there?””
No answer.
Then a voice.
A voice I recognized.
“Still asking questions, Andre?””
My blood turned cold.
Mallory stepped into view.
But she looked different.
Not scared.
Not trapped.
Calm.
She smiled.
“I knew you’d come.””
I stared.
“You did this.””
She tilted her head.
“Some of it.””
“Some?””
She walked downstairs.
“Your father started it.””
My anger rose.
“And you finished it?””
She looked at Isaiah.
“I tried to protect him.””
I almost laughed.
“You locked him underground.””
“I saved him.””
Everyone went silent.
“What?””
Mallory looked at Elena.
“She was the target.””
Elena’s face changed.
“What are you talking about?””
Mallory smiled sadly.
“The night Elena disappeared…”
She looked at me.
“Your father wasn’t trying to kill her.””
I waited.
“He was trying to kill you.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Mallory reached into her coat.
Pulled out a small recorder.
“I have proof.””
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“Put it down.””
But Mallory pressed play.
A voice filled the room.
My father’s voice.
Cold.
Clear.
*“If Andre finds out, I’ll lose everything.””*
Another voice answered.
A woman’s voice.
My blood ran cold.
Because I knew it.
Mallory.
The recording continued.
*“Then make him forget.””*
The room went silent.
Elena looked at me.
Mallory looked away.
And then the final words played.
My father’s voice.
*“If necessary… make sure Andre doesn’t wake up.””*
I couldn’t move.
Because suddenly I understood.
My father’s biggest secret wasn’t that he survived.
May you like
It was that the person who helped him destroy my family…
was still standing in front of me.
