Chapter 6: The Truth Beneath the Name

I forgot how to breathe.

For two years, I had imagined seeing Elena again.

In dreams.

In memories.

In those moments between waking and sleeping when my brain forgot she was gone.

But never like this.

Never standing in a police station.

Never with my son sitting outside waiting for me.

Never after finding proof that everything I believed about her death might have been a lie.

The officer stepped aside.

And she walked in.

I knew her before I saw her face.

The way she held herself.

The way her eyes searched the room.

The way she pressed her lips together when she was trying not to cry.

“Andre.””

My knees almost gave out.

“Elena?””

Her eyes filled instantly.

“I’m sorry.””

That was the first thing she said.

Not hello.

Not I missed you.

I’m sorry.

I stared at her.

“You’re alive.””

She nodded.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

My emotions fought each other.

Anger.

Relief.

Confusion.

Pain.

All at once.

“My children thought you were dead.””

Her face broke.

“I know.””

“You let me bury you.””

“I had no choice.””

“No choice?””

My voice rose.

“Do you know what it was like?””

She closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

The room became silent.

“You weren’t there when Zoe asked why her mother left.””

Elena started crying.

“You weren’t there when Isaiah stopped sleeping.””

Her hands covered her mouth.

“You weren’t there when I had to tell my kids they would never see you again.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“And every day, I hated myself for it.””

I looked away.

Because a part of me wanted to run to her.

And another part wanted answers.

“What happened?””

She sat down.

“I found out someone was stealing from my father’s company.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Before he died, he created accounts for the family.””

She looked at me.

“Money that was supposed to protect us.””

My mind went back to the documents.

“Mallory?””

Elena nodded.

“She was involved.””

I clenched my fists.

“Then why did Isaiah say someone called her Maria?””

Elena’s face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

“Because Maria was the name I used when I disappeared.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She looked down.

“When I discovered what Mallory was doing, I confronted her.””

“And?””

“She threatened me.””

My stomach tightened.

“She told me if I exposed her, she would destroy everything.””

“Why fake your death?””

Elena looked at me.

“Because she wasn’t alone.””

A chill moved through me.

“Who else?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Someone inside your family.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Andre—”

“No.””

I stood.

“You’re telling me someone helped you disappear, let me believe you died, and let our children suffer?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I was trying to keep them alive.””

That sentence stopped me.

“What?””

She reached into her bag.

Pulled out a small envelope.

“I left clues.””

She handed it to me.

“I knew one day Isaiah would find the basement.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because Mallory wasn’t supposed to lock him there.””

My face went cold.

“What do you mean?””

Elena looked toward the hallway.

Her voice dropped.

“She was supposed to take him somewhere else.””

The room went silent.

“Who stopped her?””

Elena looked back at me.

“The person controlling everything.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

A family photo.

Me.

Elena.

Isaiah.

Zoe.

Taken years ago.

But someone had written across the back.

*THEY WILL NEVER KNOW WHAT THEIR FATHER DID.*

My hands went numb.

“What is this?””

Elena didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked toward the station window.

“Andre…”

“What?””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“The reason Isaiah was taken wasn’t because he saw Mallory stealing money.””

I waited.

“It was because he saw something else.””

“What?””

She whispered:

“He saw the night I died.””

I froze.

“Elena…”

“He was there.””

My heart stopped.

“Isaiah was six years old.””

She nodded.

“And he remembers.””

Before I could ask another question, my phone rang.

Isaiah.

I answered immediately.

“Son?””

His voice was shaking.

“Dad…”

“What happened?””

A pause.

Then:

“I know who came downstairs.””

I stood.

“Who?””

Isaiah took a breath.

And said a name that made Elena cover her mouth.

“The person who put me in that basement…”

A long silence.

May you like

Then my son whispered:

“Was Grandpa.””
