Chapter 9: The Father I Never Knew

My body reacted before my mind did.

I stepped backward.

Elena moved in front of the children.

Detective Harris reached for his weapon.

The man standing under the cemetery lights didn’t look like a ghost.

He looked like a man who had been waiting.

Waiting for this exact moment.

“Dad?””

The word left my mouth before I could stop it.

He smiled.

A small, familiar smile.

The same one he used when I was a child and made mistakes.

A smile that never meant kindness.

It meant judgment.

“You look older.””

My fists clenched.

“You’re supposed to be dead.””

He looked around.

“So I’ve heard.””

Detective Harris stepped forward.

“Sir, stay where you are.””

My father ignored him.

His eyes stayed on me.

“You brought Elena back.””

I felt Elena stiffen.

“How do you know her?””

He laughed softly.

“Andre.””

He shook his head.

“You still ask the wrong questions.””

I wanted to hate him.

I wanted to scream.

But there was something worse.

Confusion.

Because some part of me still remembered him as my father.

The man who taught me to ride a bike.

The man who carried me when I fell.

The man I spent years trying to impress.

“What happened to you?”” I asked.

His expression changed.

“You mean what happened to your family.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“What happened to you?””

He looked away.

“Your mother ruined everything.””

Elena stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

He looked at her.

“You should have stayed gone.””

My stomach turned.

“You knew she was alive.””

“Of course.””

“And Mallory?””

“She helped.””

My fists tightened.

“You locked my son underground.””

His eyes moved to Isaiah.

For the first time, he looked almost disappointed.

“Your son was too curious.””

I felt rage explode.

“You don’t get to talk about him.””

My father looked back at me.

“You’re exactly like your mother.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means you care more about feelings than survival.””

Detective Harris stepped closer.

“You’re under investigation for multiple crimes.””

My father smiled.

“Investigation?””

He looked amused.

“You still think rules matter.””

I stared.

“What did you do?””

He sighed.

“You want the whole story?””

Nobody answered.

He looked at Elena.

“She always wanted to tell you.””

Elena’s face hardened.

“You manipulated him.””

My father laughed.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“She did.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Elena looked at him.

“Don’t.””

But he continued.

“She never told you the truth because she knew what you would do.””

I looked at Elena.

“Is that true?””

She looked away.

That hurt more than anything.

“What truth?””

She whispered:

“The night your parents came over…”

I waited.

“You found me.””

“Found you?””

“After the argument.””

Her eyes filled.

“You saw your father threatening me.””

My memories felt broken.

Like pieces missing from a puzzle.

“I don’t remember.””

“I know.””

My father smiled.

“Because I made sure you didn’t.””

I turned toward him.

“What did you do?””

He didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at Isaiah.

“Your son remembers.””

I froze.

Isaiah stepped back.

My father continued:

“He was young, but he saw everything.””

I looked at my son.

“Isaiah?””

Tears filled his eyes.

“I remembered Dad.””

My heart broke.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I was scared.””

My father smiled.

“That’s why I kept him.””

The cemetery went silent.

“You kept him?””

“He was proof.””

“Proof of what?””

My father looked directly at me.

“That you were never the man you thought you were.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

He took one step closer.

“Ask your wife what happened after the accident.””

I looked at Elena.

Her face had gone pale.

“Elena?””

She whispered:

“Andre…”

“What happened?””

She looked at my father.

Then at me.

“The accident wasn’t meant to kill me.””

My stomach dropped.

“Then what was it meant to do?””

Her voice broke.

“It was meant to make you believe you killed me.””

I couldn’t move.

“What?””

My father smiled.

“And now you finally understand.””

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone looked at it.

I answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“Don’t trust any of them.””

I froze.

“Who is this?””

The voice continued:

“Your father isn’t the only one who survived that night.””

Then the call ended.

I looked at Elena.

At my father.

At my children.

And I realized something.

The biggest secret wasn’t that my father was alive.

It was that someone else had been there with him.

Someone who had been hiding all along.

May you like

And the next name I heard…

was one I never expected.
