Chapter 14: The Truth About My Mother

Nobody spoke.

My father had spent years controlling every room he entered.

And somehow, even now, he was still doing it.

Dropping one sentence.

Watching everyone panic.

Making us chase answers he already knew.

But this time, I refused.

“You’re lying.””

He looked at me.

“Am I?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because that’s what you do.””

For the first time, his expression changed.

A small crack.

“You always believed you were the good one.””

I stepped closer.

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“I believed you were my father.””

That hit him harder.

Good.

Because I was done being afraid of him.

“Tell me the truth.””

He looked at Elena.

Then at Isaiah.

Then back at me.

“Your mother discovered what I was doing.””

“What were you doing?””

“Moving money.””

I waited.

“But she didn’t expose me.””

“Why?””

His face darkened.

“Because she was protecting you.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does.””

He walked toward the desk.

“Your mother knew if she exposed me, everything would collapse.””

“What everything?””

“The company.””

“The family.””

“You.””

I stared.

He continued.

“She made a deal.””

Elena shook her head.

“No.””

My father looked at her.

“You knew.””

“I knew she was trying to stop you.””

“No.””

He smiled.

“She helped me.””

My stomach twisted.

“Stop.””

He looked at me.

“She signed documents.””

I looked at Elena.

Her face was pale.

“What documents?””

She whispered:

“Your mother transferred control.””

I stepped back.

“She did what?””

“She thought she could fix it.””

Elena’s voice broke.

“But your father betrayed her.””

My father laughed.

“There it is.””

He looked at me.

“The part she leaves out.””

I looked between them.

“Someone tell me the truth.””

Elena closed her eyes.

“Your mother didn’t disappear because she was weak.””

I waited.

“She disappeared because she was trying to protect you.””

My father interrupted.

“And she failed.””

Detective Harris stepped between them.

“We’re done.””

“No.””

I looked at my father.

“I need to know.””

He smiled.

“Of course you do.””

He always knew exactly what I needed.

That was his power.

“You want to know why you don’t remember that night?””

I stared.

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“Because your mother was there.””

My breath caught.

“What?””

“She found you after the crash.””

Elena whispered:

“No…”

“She saw what happened.””

I looked at my father.

“What happened?””

His eyes narrowed.

“She chose.””

My heart pounded.

“Chose what?””

“Whether to save you…”

A pause.

“Or expose me.””

Silence.

I looked at Elena.

“Is that true?””

She looked devastated.

“Andre…”

“Is it?””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

“Because your father had a weapon.””

Everyone froze.

“A weapon?””

“He threatened Isaiah.””

My son went still.

“He said if I didn’t disappear, he would hurt him.””

I looked at Isaiah.

The realization hit me.

This wasn’t just about money.

It never was.

It was about control.

My father had built a world where everyone was trapped.

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

But this time, it wasn’t a warning.

It was a location.

And a photo.

I opened it.

My blood turned cold.

It was my father’s old house.

The one where I grew up.

The caption underneath said:

*THE LAST SECRET IS BURIED WHERE IT STARTED.*

Detective Harris saw my face.

“What is it?””

I showed him.

His expression changed.

“We need to go.””

My father smiled.

“You finally found it.””

I looked at him.

“Found what?””

May you like

His smile disappeared.

“The reason your mother really died.””
